Washing on New Year's Day

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/01/2024 11:13

I know this sounds ridiculous but I have washing to do and all day to get it done but I read something on here years ago 'wash on New Year's Day, wash somebody away. My DM is in ill health and 82 and if something happens and I've washed I'll never forgive myself. Writing this down I know this is completely irrational but do you wash clothes on New Year's Day?

I’ve got a mountain of washing to do as fell behind over Christmas - still not doing any of it today though!

Xanadu58 · 01/01/2024 11:57

I've done 2 loads today which are now outside drying .

googledidnthelp · 01/01/2024 11:57

No washing on New Year's Day here!

That's hilarious.

Never heard about this. Had washing to do but now won't... Just in case! Oh dear...

Willmafrockfit · 01/01/2024 11:59

it is dry weather forecast for today,
one wash out, and one about to finish
my 88 year old dm also in same situation
and my neighbour

Sorry @Noseyoldcow I feel bad for passing it on. I'm not normally one for superstitions either but this one does bother me. I hate leaving washing as well and normally stay up to date with it! I'll have to leave piles for DH tomorrow with instructions! It's not him it's me!

You need to calm down. It's only fucking washing. Whether you put it in the washer or someone else does, it all gets washed the same Confused

Maybe you would benefit from widening your interests this year, if you get so uptight about washing 🤷‍♀️

MegaClutterSlut · 01/01/2024 12:00

I always do washing on NYD. I first heard about the superstition on here a few years ago. I haven't managed to kill off anyone yet 😁

NannyGythaOgg · 01/01/2024 12:00

My bed sheets are in the wash now.

This superstition stems from when washing meant a whole day affair and the kitchen in disruption.

I am 68. When my mother washed it meant filling the tub with a hose from the sink and everything being run through the mangle to squeeeze water out. I think I was about 10 before she even got a spindryer. Even when I was first married I had a twin tub which had to be filled from the hot water tap and the clothes were spun into a bowl on the floor. Then I certainly didn't do any washing on New Year's Day, as it was like another Sunday and a big Dinner (lunch) was 'needed'.

Now things just get stuck in the washer and it's left to get on with it. No need to worry about washing on NYD or any other day.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/01/2024 12:04

I've never washed on NYD and in 2022 I lost my sister, my uncle and my nan.

In 2023 we lost our best friend and my dad lost his wife.

Maybe I should do some washing, clearly the superstition is backwards for me..

WestendGrrls · 01/01/2024 12:05

I'm sorry about your mum but you are perpetuating a load of old tripe.

It's funny how I thought the Internet would bring on the age of information but human stupidity is actually embracing the age of misinformation. No-one can examine something critically or rationally, if they have seen a tiktok about it, it must be true and they pass it on.

Just a new form of superstitions and old wives tales for the next generation.

Winnading · 01/01/2024 12:05

Im about to get up and put some loads in. I tried my best to get all the washing done yesterday. Sadly my dog decided a romp through 16 muddy puddles and a higher than usual stream was a fantastic idea. So washing the stinking towels sabotaged my attempts.
I only wanted it all done so I got one day with no washer/dryer noise. Wasnt meant to be I guess

WhateverMate · 01/01/2024 12:06

I thought we left daft superstitions behind in the dark ages.

They're silly and can become quite stressful for some people who feel the need to change their life actions.

JingleSnowmanTree · 01/01/2024 12:10

@teaandtoastwithmarmite no I don't do washing on New Years Day, or wash my hair.

im astounded so many have never heard of it.

so many rude replies though, its nasty & unnecessary.

theres nothing wrong with my education or logical thinking thanks very much!

yes its superstition, but why unnecessarily poke the bear?? There are 364 other days in the year to do washing! If you're running out of knickers, how long have dirty ones been sitting in the laundry basket?

IF a child had wet them, someone had vomited (or the fig had rolled in fix poo) I'd wash the linen/clothing) without hesitation, but otherwise no, anything not washed yesterday, can wait until another day.

Presumably some people still think we need to drown witches.

Lesina · 01/01/2024 12:17

I’m on my 3rd load so I am snookered then…

VisionsOfSplendour · 01/01/2024 12:18

Why so many threads about this nonsense, how does any right thinking woman in. 2024 think that there is any reason not to use their washing machine on any date

Is there some weird attack from bots or something, enough of this ridiculousness already

VisionsOfSplendour · 01/01/2024 12:22

Moier · 01/01/2024 11:29

I'm very superstitious.. got it from my Granny.
My washing was done two days ago.. rest can wait. Although l usually wash most days.

What exactly would the mechanism be that links future events to when you put a wash on?

sagalooshoe · 01/01/2024 12:27

I suspect this is a superstition women invented back in the days of the mangle so they could have 1 less day of manual labour. I bet women invented the 'day of rest' on a Sunday too.
Good ole Mary Magdelene 😉

Notmetoo · 01/01/2024 12:29

Ive never heard of that superstition and yes I have a full load if washing drying at the moment

Funkyslippers · 01/01/2024 12:29

JingleSnowmanTree you could say that about anything though. You take chances every day in life. If you worried about "poking the bear unnecessarily" about all superstitions you'd never get anything done

cravingmilkshake · 01/01/2024 12:35

I've done three loads this morning. Was supposed to be two, but realised I needed to put all the whites in (school shirts ) for tomorrow.

My husband is superstitious and said we shouldn't but he piped down when I told him how much he would need to do tomorrow.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/01/2024 12:38

yes its superstition, but why unnecessarily poke the bear??

What's the actual correlation between doing your washing and people dying? I mean, how do you prove that the fact you did your washing on NYD and granny died in August are actually linked?

I can see how it arose - some damned smart women decided to give themselves a day off from household drudgery and invented a reason why they shouldn't (and why wouldn't you want a day off from that?) - but doesn't anyone who subscribes to this actually examine if there's any logic behind it? because it seems to me that it's just one more stick women use to beat themselves with. 'Oh noes! I did the laundry on NYD and granny died! it's all my fault!'

fisherhatesgravel · 01/01/2024 12:46

Globules · 01/01/2024 11:25

WTAF?!

Second load has already gone in.

Apologies in advance to whoever I'm washing away now and will with load 3.

Edited

3?? That makes you a serial killer 🤣

RaraRachael · 01/01/2024 12:50

I'd never heard the phrase about washing somebody out of your life till I saw it on FB yesterday. If I needed to do washing, I'd just do it - load of nonsense!
