Washing on New Year's Day

I know this sounds ridiculous but I have washing to do and all day to get it done but I read something on here years ago 'wash on New Year's Day, wash somebody away. My DM is in ill health and 82 and if something happens and I've washed I'll never forgive myself. Writing this down I know this is completely irrational but do you wash clothes on New Year's Day?

I dont wash on New Years Day, I washed yesterday, but dried today. I've since read that some people don't wash up or clean either.

Me too 💕

I've never washed new years day always followed this superstition But washing hair? Is this bad luck too? I've read on Google that shouldn't wash the dishes either, but I have cleaned today😬

I have a 4th load of washing on here and another in the dryer. Others have been dried, folded and put away. Never heard this superstition anyway though.

Also washed my hair this morning and have ran the dishwasher today!

I thought about this yesterday as remembered the thread about this last year. I no longer wash every day as there are currently two people living here. Used to be five, soon will be one. I wash when I have a full load so today I washed once. If I wash someone away I hope it's X.

I wash on set days

Tue darks /towels

Fri. Whites /beds

Sun dd pink stuff

So if nyd falls on one of those days as did last year then I wash

I don't believe in it

Well apparently this is a thing, my friend came around early and had a fit as I had washing on, and DS had just got out the shower - wtf?!

She has also eaten 12 grapes, and left the house - on her way to mine via her back door 🤷‍♀️

Apparently this doesn't apply to washing alone! It applies to chores on new year's day also but all have different meanings.

I didn’t do any washing on new year’s day. Not because I’m superstitious, but because I’d worked my arse off cooking for a party, and I spent the day having a well-earned rest.

I had never heard of this particular one, and it won’t stop me doing it next year.

Never heard of that superstition before.

Tumbleweed101 · 02/01/2024 21:00

My teenage daughter has just got interested in this kind of thing, so no we didn't wash anything yesterday. Made up for it today as want to be ahead for when I go back to work on Thurs.

The thing about superstitions is that they are just that - until something confirms your belief.
I am not at all superstitious apart from this one - because the one year it was done, something awful happened. The something awful that happened would likely have happened four months later anyway, but it really is taboo in our family as a result.
Slowly working my way through multiple guests' bedding; tablecloths, napkins, tea towels etc galore... not even sure when we will get to the clothes... plus it's so cold and wet and there are only SO MANY SPACES for hanging.
If I get it all washed, ironed and put away by the weekend, I will declare success
