Worst clothes fashion trends of the last 30 years?

What do you think the worst fashion trends have been over the last 30 years?

I was watching a BBC drama set in the early 2000s, and it reminded me that I once wore a tight pencil skirt with tight knee high boots. I think pencil skirts were the worst, largely because they were so uncomfortable.

Trousers with a skirt attached
cycling shorts were worn by me and my friends in the 90’s 😬
halter neck tops where the neck was a gold ring and the material came to a point at the bottom - thought we looked ace teamed with about 690 of those tiny butterfly clips in our glitter gelled hair.

Showing my age but I was wearing dresses with trainers in the early 90s (with adidas gazelles) so definitely think it'll be round again.

I was wearing dresses with little plimsoll type pumps early 2000's. I don't recall it being a trend at that time.

Those gym leggings that scrunch up the bum make me cringe. I see lots of customers in shops and high streets wearing them, and I just hate the shape and design. So tacky looking.

The low crotch trousers 'harem' thingies I never could understand these

KnickerlessParsons · 30/12/2023 22:40

Cut off denim shorts worn over black tights

Ah I loved this look back in the day - when I was slim and aged 19! Sigh.

FKAT · 30/12/2023 22:40

I've got narrow shoulders and big boobs. I look like an egg in cold shoulder tops.

Dresses over jeans in the early 2000s. Like the image below as an example. What were we thinking? 🤣

Saw a newspaper article saying this look is back in!
(I don't mind it btw)

Pointy stiletto shoes
Trouser skirts
Gypsy skirts
Net vest tops

Love that flat shoes are still in

MaidOfSteel · 30/12/2023 22:45

Those awful, incredibly low rise jeans/trousers. Ugh.

nonumbersinthisname · 30/12/2023 22:46

As someone who is pear shaped with a high waist, I stopped wearing trousers when the low rise fashion kicked in as I couldn’t buy a pair anywhere that actually fitted me. Those are the worst kind of trends for me, when I can’t find anything I’d actually want to wear, and I’m going through that now. The current trend for shapeless garments has driven me to take sewing lessons and I’m starting to make my own clothes. They might not be high fashion but they may actually fit me.

Elfon · 30/12/2023 22:46

I heard Mary Portas on the radio some time in the mid noughties being asked what she predicted the next big trend would be. She said midi skirts with white trainers. Apparently she’d seen it in East London. I was thinking, really??, but she was right!

LaviniaLee · 30/12/2023 22:46

@icebearforpresident I had several pairs of those 'footless tights' which I more with skirts. I also thought they were fab!

The horrendous baggy shapeless maxi dress trend of very recent years. There are still plenty of them around, sadly. Usually found in garish colours and lurid patterns. Some people will wear anything if they think it's fashionable.
My daughters used to wear denim shorts over black tights. They looked great.

Maybe too old, but who remembers side hair combs?

Banana clips and the cones for the high, stand up ponytails.

They were so uncomfortable

High waisted fit me much better

BlowingAway · 30/12/2023 23:00

Also the current slightly baggy leather trousers I see loads of women wearing on nights out. I think they look terrible.

Tops with a plastic encolsure on the back, containing water and floating model fish.

I missed this one happening!!!

Older than 30 years ago, but who else remembers clothes that changed colour with body heat?

People in the hot clubs with colours showing their sweaty armpits etc.😱

Global Hypercolour I think !

Loveablockheel · 30/12/2023 23:09

Trainers, floral dress, denim jacket and cross body bag, the most ubiquitous look that became a uniform.

dsan · 30/12/2023 23:10

When I first started going out the trend was office wear Blush we looked ridiculous is smart blouses, black trousers and very high heels!
