Worst clothes fashion trends of the last 30 years?

What do you think the worst fashion trends have been over the last 30 years?

I was watching a BBC drama set in the early 2000s, and it reminded me that I once wore a tight pencil skirt with tight knee high boots. I think pencil skirts were the worst, largely because they were so uncomfortable.

Global Hypercolour I think !

I worked in C&A when these came out and remember demonstrating the colour change by using a hairdryer on them.

Going further back to the eighties we had..
Ra-ra skirts.
Puffball skirts.
High waisted ' carrot top ' jeans, usually worn with a sweatshirt and kitten heel court shoes.
Shoulder pads that made you look like an American footballer, even in t.shirts.
Massive hair.
Poodle perms.
T.shirts with Frankie says relax and Wham with wake me up.
Pencil skirts that you could barely walk in, so took little steps and hoiked it up when going up steps.
Fun fur coats that made you look four sizes bigger than you were.
Rabbit fur jackets ( I had a burgundy one...yet I've never seen a burgundy rabbit ) aka Coney fur.
Burgundy everything.
Feather earrings, various colours.
Tucker boots, usually worn with tracksuit bottoms or jeans tucked in, even the blokes wore this attire.
Frills and flounces everywhere.

What a time to be a teenager 😂

Thongs appearing over the tops of low cut jeans with a bare midriff and cropped top, especially if the person was larger than a size 8 and/or pregnant.

In the early 00s I worked with a very lovely colleague who wore cropped tops that were also low cut and thongs. She was very curvy and it really wasn’t possible to ignore her bust. Male colleagues often really tried to but it was so all out there, I don’t think anyone could ignore it.

Bit more than 30 years but shell suits, they were a fire hazard 🔥

educatingrati · 01/01/2024 00:46

Neon legendary warmers, I still wear leg warmers as they work, but they're not bright neon.

educatingrati · 01/01/2024 00:47

Bloody predictive text leg warmers, not legendary!

MrsHughesPinny · 01/01/2024 03:54

Low rise jeans with the waistband ripped off c.2002/3

Peplum hems

Bodycon dresses, anyone over 25 or less than a perfectly balanced hourglass size 10 looks awful in them.

Leggings with a tunic top, looks so middle aged suburban Mum in the early 2000s.

thenightsky · 01/01/2024 10:47

Jeans with a massive rip across both knees so when the wearer sits down, she looks like she's wearing knee length socks.

Don't forget knickerbockers in cord

Also late 70s black satin trousers or those skintight shiny red ones

Early 80's I had a peach ra ra short that took me ages to save up
For fro
C&a!

I found them pretty. Mine was from Etam, white with red polka dots (with aspirin coloured legs....)

Cold shoulder tops are really the worst of all time.

Yes, I agree

Giggorata · 10/07/2024 00:25

“Sleeveless polo necks ? Never seen them.”
“I had one around 1985”

I had one around 1965.

Agree about cold shoulder tops and low rise jeans that show pants, thongs or bum cracks.

“Jeans with a massive rip across both knees so when the wearer sits down, she looks like she's wearing knee length socks.”
This made me chortle.

WirelessWendy · 10/07/2024 01:58

Anything I have worn since about 1983 has looked absolutely bloody awesome.

I don't have any time for this nonsense about looking back and saying "oh, didn't we look ridiculous."

Me neither! I look at older pics and I’m more pissed off that I’ve threw some of the outfits away 😂😂

Mimilamore · 22/07/2024 17:43

Sugar almond coloured Lycra tops and flared leggings, camel toe included, coupled with cheap furry, slides ( dirty ones ) This look is worn with orange face, bad fake eyelashes and pump ed up lips in these parts... add some ant eater nails and lumpy hair extensions and you have the ' look' ..... vile and usually on really pretty young girls who would look so nice otherwise and it's a bit ' local!'

KirstenBlest · 22/07/2024 18:49

That look is alive and well on my high street. The furry slippers always look grubby.

FKAT · 30/12/2023 22:08

The 00s were the nadir of fashion: ponchos, wide belts on gypsy skirts, butterfly clips, frosted lippy, plucked eyebrows.

But my absolute favourite love to hate look of the era was:

Denim miniskirt with cropped skinny cardy
Fake Tan
Ironed hair
Massive uterine handbag (of the Mulberry Alexa variety)
Ugg boots

Go to look for Atomic Kittens, WAGs, Reality TV stars.

Most of those things were around in the 70s

Yalta · 01/08/2024 11:00

I think a lot of these fashions look worse because people don’t buy the correct size or wear them with the correct underwear

I have worn many pencil skirts but never had them ride up because whilst the shape might infer tight fitting you are meant to be slightly slimmer than the width. Also wearing them with that dated item of underwear an underskirt if they weren’t lined was a must

Nightblindness · 01/08/2024 11:02

Men/ boys wearing trousers with the seat of their trousers hanging as low as their knees, showing half their underpants below. I couldn't stand that look. I was horrified to come across someone dressed like that the other day. I thought the trend had died.

I remember getting on a bus in a pencil skirt and my suspender ripped through the skirt at the front 😱

Yalta · 01/08/2024 11:07

Also a lot of fashion items people need to look at their body shape and size and really think about what these items look like on.

I really love palazzo pants, long, wide leg trousers in soft material. But with short legs and being under 5ft 3” they look ridiculous on me.

Yes I could buy a pair and yes I could in theory hem them but it still doesn’t mean I would look like friends who wear them who are 6” taller and have much longer legs.
The effect is lost on someone with a 26” inside leg

ActuallyChristmas · 01/08/2024 15:38

Bootcut jeans, esp if ironed flat. One might own 20 pairs of footwear and not one would look right with the bootcut. Also, they are flares, just not very nice ones
