Worst clothes fashion trends of the last 30 years?

What do you think the worst fashion trends have been over the last 30 years?

I was watching a BBC drama set in the early 2000s, and it reminded me that I once wore a tight pencil skirt with tight knee high boots. I think pencil skirts were the worst, largely because they were so uncomfortable.

those low cut trousers which showed both bum cleavage and near enough front bottom.

also ‘octopus’ trousers which were both ugly and a trip hazard.

The 00s were the nadir of fashion: ponchos, wide belts on gypsy skirts, butterfly clips, frosted lippy, plucked eyebrows.

But my absolute favourite love to hate look of the era was:

Denim miniskirt with cropped skinny cardy
Fake Tan
Ironed hair
Massive uterine handbag (of the Mulberry Alexa variety)
Ugg boots

Go to look for Atomic Kittens, WAGs, Reality TV stars.

Maxi dresses-makes you look ten times
bigger than you are.

And so long that they trip you up.

More recently, sliders with socks.

Lime green or orange "satin" shirts and chenille jumpers with nylon hipster flares, in the early/mid 90s.

I remember this featuring in many a Just Seventeen fashion spread!

Skinny jeans and tunic tops. Just look middle aged and bad. Just look stupid on me. I always stayed with my wife legged trousers that suit my shape and they’re easy to buy now in fashion and will stick with them when they go.

I felt so uncomfortable in this look but wore it anyway 😏 am also loving the looser styles at the moment!

Ski pants with the stirrup under the foot, early 90's. After half an hour the knees and arse went baggy

Loved my ra ra skirts though

3luckystars · 30/12/2023 22:11

Cold shoulder tops are really the worst of all time.

Worldgonecrazy · 30/12/2023 22:11

The current trend for shapeless dresses and wide leg mid ankle grazers with boots. I call it ‘the London look’ as it’s very popular with tourists from London. They usually order coconut milk skinny decaf lattes too.

Delassalle · 30/12/2023 22:11

Bootcut jeans.

thenightsky · 30/12/2023 22:12

I don't get the cold shoulder hate. They hide the bingo wings and show off the toned upper arms.

Worst for me is the beige/flesh coloured leggings that make people look naked from the waist down.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/12/2023 22:13

Ski pants.
Skin tone leggings.

Scouse brows.
Inflated lips.
Overly done highlighter, so people look good in selfies, but far less gone in real life.

The dresses over jeans were not good.
Nor were the super low-cut jeans.

Soupofthemonth · 30/12/2023 22:14

A friend had a shell suit. We joked about it not too long ago.

Slim leather ties.

LaviniaLee · 30/12/2023 22:15

@thenightsky when were the flesh coloured leggings in fashion?

OP posts:
ImTiredBoss · 30/12/2023 22:16

Those awful velvet Juicy Coture tracksuits that had "juicy" written over the arse of them.

Often seen paired with a pair of tan Ugg boots.

icebearforpresident · 30/12/2023 22:16

I spent a lot of 2004-2005 wearing a denim miniskirt, footless tights (aka leggings, but we insisted on calling them footless tights), neon T-shirts and ballet flats. I had an a-symmetric haircut and thought I looked amazing.

I now know I just looked shit. But I’m still rocking the a-symmetric haircut.

ImTiredBoss · 30/12/2023 22:17

Also, I know it's not clothes related but who remembers the cracked nail polish trend 🤣

Soupofthemonth · 30/12/2023 22:20

Older than 30 years ago, but who else remembers clothes that changed colour with body heat?

People in the hot clubs with colours showing their sweaty armpits etc.😱

Back21970 · 30/12/2023 22:21

Puff Ball skirts - be around the mid 80’s.

Can’t see them ever making a comeback unlike most of the other stuff on here which probably will at some point 🤣

SagaNorensPorche · 30/12/2023 22:21

Cold shoulder tops without question.

millymog11 · 30/12/2023 22:22

(1980s) white stilleto shoes

Also in the 1980s I had a particularly unpleasant drop waist dress. It might look cute in the sailor style on a 6 year old but not on 16 year old me

Soupofthemonth · 30/12/2023 22:22

Ooh! I wanted the cracked nail polish, but never got round to doing it.

emmylousings · 30/12/2023 22:22

Dressing like a rapper, with big baseball boots and CDs around our necks. Cringe

BigFatCat2024 · 30/12/2023 22:22

Sorry but for me it's camel toe, scrunch bum leggings (particularly in flesh colour) and high waisted short shorts.

IMO no-one looks good in any of those (no matter how young or attractive)

RestingCatsArseFace · 30/12/2023 22:22

Boot cut jeans
Dungarees
Cold shoulder tops
Shrunken suits & jackets on men
Tracksuit bottoms and jeans showing arse cracks
Slug eyebrows
Orange faces
Swollen lips
Clumpy boots with big thick heels
Huge loafers that look like cartoon feet
Little House on the Prarie dresses
