Doesitcomewithalegofrog · 30/12/2023 20:52

Was just looking at this thread of 2023 predictions https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4708892-predictions-for-2023?

Does anyone want to make predictions for 2024?

I think...
A coalition government following a GE in the second half of the year
We'll have another mild wet summer
A Royal couple will split up
Taylor Swift will release a rock/indie or electronica album
The wars in Ukraine and Gaza will keep raging (sadly) though there may be some progress towards peace
House prices to drop a little more but stabilise in the second half of the year

Predictions for 2023 | Mumsnet

With the new year almost here I wondered what sorts of things people think might happen during it so, as pure speculation, what sort of happenings do...

The summer solstice will be on Thursday, 20 Jun 2024, 9:50 pm.

MargaritaThyme · 30/12/2023 22:39

The General Election will be in October. Labour will win a working majority and Starmer will become PM, but not by the landslide indicated by current polling. Sunak will resign as Tory leader immediately, and his successor will be Kemi Badenoch.

England will win the men’s Euros.

The US presidential election will not be between Biden & Trump, because at least one of them will suffer a serious health crisis which will end their candidacy. Either Trump will have a heart attack or (possibly more likely) Biden will have a public ‘senior moment’ so serious that support for his candidacy in the Democratic Party will collapse.

A current, male Premier League footballer will come out as gay.

Snowflakecookie1989 · 30/12/2023 23:00

Justin Bieber will split from wife.

Restinggoddess · 30/12/2023 23:11

Gen election will be in May - hung parliament

SNP wiped out in Scotland- Labour win

House prices won’t drop too much and will vary by area

Prince Andrew scandal will re erupt
weather will continue to be wet and ‘unseasonal’

Putin assassinated - from within Russia

Sadly - we will lose more greats that we all grew up watching

we all get one more year older

Not even thinking about the USA elections

JKR gets an apology for all the grief she’s had ( not highly likely)

TokyoSushi · 30/12/2023 23:31

General election will be in May, Labour will win, and Starmer will be PM, but not with the majority currently being suggested. Sunak will resign immediately and Badenoch will become leader of the opposition. Things will seem a little better, but not much.

Interest rates, house prices, energy costs etc will all settle a bit, but not very much.

Something will happen to Putin, could be illness/death or assassination.

Trump will not become US President, but it might not be Biden either.

The war in Gaza will eventually fizzle out with some sort of fudged deal leaving the door open for it all to kick off again at a later stage.

Liverpool will win the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp will extend his contract.

There will be more trouble with Iran.

Mollie King & Stuart Broad will have another baby.

Molly Mae & Tommy Fury will split up.

TravellingSpoon · 30/12/2023 23:38

Liverpool will win the Premier League.

General election will be in June. Labour will win but not by the mahoosive margins that the opinion poles are suggesting. Lib Dems will win several seats in traditional Tory areas. Rishi will resign and Suella will come back with a vengeance. SNP will do badly.

We will have heavy snow in March.

Elon Musk will carry on doing ridiculous things and will become the subject of more public ridicule.

GB will have our best ever Olympics

England will win the Euros and Jude Bellingham will be the hero.

Bristoluser · 30/12/2023 23:39

Trump will be disqualified or win. Labour will win but not by a landslide. Johnson may reappear with Farage and Braverman to challenge Sunak. Economy will start to recover slowly. Ukraine war will continue but Putin will be asaisinated. Agreement in Gaza.

Bristoluser · 30/12/2023 23:39

Election in May.

MargaritaThyme · 31/12/2023 00:03

England will win the Euros and Jude Bellingham will be the hero

Glad someone shares my optimism! I agree about Bellingham, too. I expect him to establish himself as the best player in the world in 24.

Delassalle · 31/12/2023 00:16

Three Lotto jackpot winning numbers will be -

14 29 35 39 47 58

6 39 42 48 50 55

11 18 29 40 46 49

I am not at liberty to tell you which weeks they will be drawn.

MissBattleaxe · 31/12/2023 00:34

I think Braverman and other extremists will form their own party. Labour will win the election and people will get annoyed when things don't get better after a week or something mad like that. The Daily Fail will get so sued that it will fold. ( Hopefully). The royal familys popularity will plummet even further as the King lives a life of unreal luxury whilst claiming to rule us.

Fergie and sweaty Andrew will remarry but it won't make him any more popular.

Snowpake · 31/12/2023 08:35

M and S will go into administration

Everyone you like in The Archers will die

David Attenborough will die and have a state funeral and shortly afterwards there will be a CGI VR experience featuring him, the Queen and Paddington bear, available at the excell centre in London. It will be advertised to you relentlessly on social media and tickets will cost £45pp

On the night that he wins the election Kier Starmer will wear a suit with flashy lining, and he will show a bit of the lining as he walks into number 10, and that will be the most exciting thing he has ever done in the public imagination

but, in private, Kier Starmer has been writing erotic novels and Nadine Dorries will out him publicly when she finds out that he is outselling her

Michelle Mone will go on I’m a Celebrity.

grayhairdontcare · 31/12/2023 08:55

The cost of everything will keep rising
The rain will be relentless
Public transport will continue to be shit
Doctors will continue to strike

Iam4eels · 31/12/2023 12:17

I'll move mine over to your thread @Doesitcomewithalegofrog.

  • there'll be a GE, I reckon by May at the latest as the Tories continue their slow implosion and Rishi reaches a point where he simply can't hang on any longer due to in-fighting and sleaze. Labour will win but not by a landslide and the overall results will be messy with a lot of the vote split. The Conservatives will barely have enough seats to remain as the official opposition and the rest of Parliament will consist of many smaller factions with Reform winning at least one seat.
  • the big foodie trend will be farm-to-table. As food standards continue to drop post-Brexit there'll be a focus on knowing where your food is from, how it's been produced/processed, and how that affects the end result/meal. Potatoes in various forms and Polish food will be the street food trends.
  • for drink trends rum will still be popular but it'll be overtaken by tropical flavours. Everything will be available in a tropical flavour, exotic blend or fruity taste and drinks like Malibu, Archers and Taboo will have a bit of a retro revival. Schnapps and liqueurs will be the 'in' drink
  • cane corsos will replace XL bullies as the status dog of choice, there will be increasing pressure to reinstate dog licenses and there will be heavier restrictions placed on breeding dogs in order to cut down on backyard breeders
  • Andrew and Sarah Ferguson will ask Charles for permission to remarry
  • there will finally be an ACOTAR television adaptation, it'll divide fans between those who love it and those who hate it and draw inevitable GoT comparisons
  • speaking of GoT, there will finally be a release date for Winds of Winter and everyone accepts that we will never read A Dream of Spring because it will never be completed
  • early 00s fashion will have a revival with cami tops, medallion belts and buckled everything. No giant owl necklaces though, that one will stay confined to history where it belongs. Body Shop will bring out a limited edition range of vintage products including fuzzy peach and dewberry scents, morello cherry lip balm and animal shaped soaps.
  • Joe Biden will win the US election but will step down shortly after citing health reasons
  • Taylor Swift will announce via an album release that she's married and has been for several months having managed to pull off a secret wedding
  • theatre announcements will include a Frozen tour, Encanto and Wonka to be adapted for the stage, My Neighbour Totoro to get a permanent run. Six will face controversy by casting a trans performer as one of the queens
  • Bon Marche will close, Argos will announce that it is closing all in-person stores and scaling back to online only, Superdry will go into administration. WH Smith will of course survive.
Doesitcomewithalegofrog · 31/12/2023 18:01

@Iam4eels I'm going to add a pregnancy prediction for Taylor, in the 2nd half of the year.

Also re the GE I think the SNP will lose a lot of the vote share but still hold onto most of their seats as people will be tactical to avoid the Tories. I think Labour will do well in Edinburgh though and parts of Glasgow.

Elton John will die. So will John Cleese, Dolly Parton and a big name in British comedy from the 80s/90s eg Lenny Henry, French/Saunders, Jasper Carrott (I realise I'm being very vague, it's just a hunch).

OP posts:
FrostieBoabby · 02/01/2024 01:33

There will be a several devastating XL Bully deaths in Scotland.

Megan and Harry will announce baby #3 as they are struggling financially and need more content. Wouldn't surprise me if they manage twins for extra tabloid space.

SNP will be in crisis once the missing money is accounted for.

Duke of Edinburgh will be confirmed as having a serious illness.

Queen consort will be seen less and less, nothing will be officially confirmed but there will be much more media speculation about her health.

The Daily Mail and their useless 'journalists' will continue to publish utter crap.

David Beckham will not receive a Knighthood 🤣.

I'll take a punt on Rishi no longer being PM, he'll be replaced twice by 31 Dec 2024.

verdantverdure · 02/01/2024 03:04

May Election

Batshit Tory campaign focuses on the identity politics of the easily manipulated rather than the bread and butter issues such as the economy, the NHS, etc.

Labour win comfortably and Greens, Lib Dems make gains.

Tories down to 80 seats. Lots of big beasts in "safe" seats are out on their ears. Party becomes even more batshit in response.

Kemi Badenoch becomes the new leader and is even more shit at PMQs than Sunak because Starmer's answer to everything is "yeah. Your lot had 14 years to fix that and instead you left it to crumble so pipe down."

The long road to fixing the damage of the last 14 years begins.

verdantverdure · 02/01/2024 03:13

Brenda Blethyn and Bill Nighy will be cast in the Thursday Murder Club film.

No RRMartin Winds of Winter or even a release date.

This Morning cancelled indefinitely.

Monsoon summer rather than Wildfire summer.

coxesorangepippin · 02/01/2024 03:17

These are all a bit bleak, let's face it!

John Major cook book?

verdantverdure · 02/01/2024 03:24

Nightclub closures hit the headlines because young women don't buy drinks out any more due to spiking.

Pubs continue to close their doors too because nobody's got the money for that except alcoholics.

Repossession problems occur when thousands of people who live in flats with a high service charge are unable to find a lender prepared to let them remortgage when their fixed rate ends.

Animal charities offer a lifelong foster option where they continue to support the animal financially in order to rehome to people who can no longer afford pets and clear the backlogs in rescues.

The birthrate drops again.

verdantverdure · 02/01/2024 03:25

And so does life expectancy.

verdantverdure · 02/01/2024 03:30

We'll still all call it Twitter.

verdantverdure · 02/01/2024 03:43

The Tories let some county councils go bankrupt and the corporate owners of the local enterprise zone or freeport take over.

It looks good at first but in a few years they'll be getting in huge debt AND whining for government subsidies to pay shareholder dividends and massive CEO salaries whilst simultaneously letting infrastructure rot, service deteriorate and charges rise.

Like all privatisation.

Karrak · 02/01/2024 09:03

In the UK the summer will be characterised by two hot spells of between 38 - 42 degrees each of 7-10 days duration.

Labour will consult on four new towns in England after coming to power though they will not be announced until 2027.

Labour will also announce a property tax based on value on a Co-efficient of household income before abandoning it in 2025.

A leading arts and literary figure will be assassinated.

World stock markets will reach a high for around 10-20 weeks before ending the year 15% lower due to political and economic concerns in China.

IHT will be replaced by CGT on death before the Conservatives lose power.

Reed-Mogg, Braverman will switch to Reform.

The US administration will unveil a new ground-breaking cluster UAV capable of operating from space and neutralising satellites and terrestrial targets.

The Argentinian administration will continue to sabre rattle over the Falkland Islands.

The BRICS will expand and then publish a blueprint for a new format of the UN which will exclude France and the UK as central members. France will however be represented through the EU.

Vertical farming in cities will receive significant coverage in the press.
