Predictions for 2023

Iam4eels · 30/12/2022 21:28

With the new year almost here I wondered what sorts of things people think might happen during it so, as pure speculation, what sort of happenings do you think we might see in 2023?

My predictions are:

  • gin will be out, rum will be in. That whole trend for flavoured gins, small batch gins, home made gin, gin bars, gin glasses, gin gift sets, gin everything seems to have been sneakily replaced by rum everything
  • food trends will be the two extremes of decadence vs being super-frugal. There'll be a trend for luxury and eating something for the sake of it, because it makes you feel good and it's indulgent. The opposite end of the same trend will be using every last part of any given food, kind of like the fabled MN chicken, and using leftovers not just as leftovers but as ingredients themselves for entirely new meals
  • I reckon Twitter will do a MySpace and cease to exist in its current format. Not sure what's there to replace it but Elon Musk is the type to hit the self-destruct button on his way out the door
  • I think there'll be an increase in crimes committed by incels and MRAs
  • there'll be more strikes, I think these will culminate in a general strike and that it'll lead to a General Election when it becomes clear the government have no sort of grip on anything
  • musically I think Britpop will have a big revival
  • Matilda has been a huge success so I think Netflix will look at adapting more musicals and that musicals in general will be big. I reckon Six will get a film adaptation, possibly a Cabaret remake too
  • this predictions is a bit niche but musicals related. Beetleguise will finally come to the West End and Hamilton will go on a UK tour

I haven't really considered world events, businesses, or celebrities yet. I think Holly and Phil will leave This Morning. I reckon WH Smith will finally go bust and close down.

A new libertines album

the end of the the war in ukraine

death of the former pope benedict

another covid wave: but no more lockdowns

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 30/12/2022 21:33

Putin will tighten his grip
In the energy supply of EU even more and prices will continue to rise

I can see unrest come spring if Tory's don't discuss strikes and nhs plus over issues.

Rum is in for sure

Punk fashion will surface particularly now VW has died.

Guitar music will become big again

Wages will rise They have too

Houses will reduce 10/20%
Depending on area

Interest rates will slowly rise

Even if Putin manages to hit the nuclear button and the northern hemisphere is obliterated: WH Smith will still be standing. With self checkouts

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 30/12/2022 21:33

No way will the war end. Not unless Putin is killed.

Piscesmumma1978 · 30/12/2022 21:34

I think Camilla will die.

They will find be a big issue with electric cars.

We will have a very hot summer in the UK, hotter then this year.

Well you've already gotten one right, a day early though.

I agree with you about another covid wave, the news reports from China are very early-2020. I agree too that there won't be lockdowns although I think their might be some light covid measures such as masks in high risk areas like hospitals and some enclosed spaces, free LFTs and more encouragement to isolate when testing positive, and the vaccine scheme open to all again.

I also predicted the Queen dying too.

admittedly predicting an elderly person dying within the next year doesn’t make me psychic.

but really hope for an end of the war in Ukraine

Doesitcomewithalegofrog · 30/12/2023 20:46

I'm really impressed that OP predicted the twitter/X change!

Quite a lot of this thread came true, shame the war in Ukraine is still going though (plus all the other wars).

CrapBucket · 30/12/2023 23:14

I HAVE switched from gin to rum! Good predictions @Iam4eels

Jk987 · 30/12/2023 23:22

Don't you mean predictions for 2024?

Mademetoxic · 30/12/2023 23:24

Jk987 · 30/12/2023 23:22

Don't you mean predictions for 2024?

It was posted this time last year, predicting the current year.

Iam4eels · 31/12/2023 01:13

I'm surprised by how much I got right too!

Anyone want to make some for 2024?

  • in a surprise to no one, there'll be a GE. The results will be messy, Labour won't get the landslide they expect and the Conservatives will take less of a heavy hit than expected but there'll be a lot of the vote split between various smaller parties with Reform winning at least one seat
  • with the XL Bully restrictions kicking in tomorrow, Cane Corsos will become the next status dog
  • summer will be record breakingly hot, topping the few 40C days we had last year
  • WH Smiths will of course survive another year
OP posts:
EmmaEmerald · 31/12/2023 01:18

Good shout on the rum, lots of flavoured rum about
WHSmith will carry on beyond my lifetime I reckon!

But there weren't a few 40c days this summer?

re 2024 - I agree on the election result.

Howmanysleepsnow · 31/12/2023 01:25
  1. heavy snow in the uk in February. Flooding in summer.
  2. War in Gaza and Ukraine continues. North Korea destabilises.
  3. some sort of major scientific anti-famine breakthrough (possibly driven by global warming)
  4. fuel prices rise
Iam4eels · 31/12/2023 02:05

By last summer I mean 2022

OP posts:
forcedfun · 31/12/2023 08:40

Impressed by your predictions last year op!
