If you could change your surname to anything, what would you pick?

My maiden name was relatively rare, but easy enough to spell etc - I had no great desire to hang on to it and adopted my husband’s name without even thinking of not doing so.

But teenage me always wanted a surname beginning with a B, as I loved signing the letter B! So I always imagined fancy surnames like Baudelaire, or even a standard Ballantine.

Now, if I were choosing, I think I would go for something a bit quirky - I dunno, Midwinter or Evensong or something.

If I ever changed my name, it would be to my great great grandfathers surname which is really pretty and unusual, but died out as no one on that branch (including his sibs) had children who continued it. It would also be a nod to the other side of the family as my incredible great aunt had a surname that sounded the same, just spelt differently

I did change my surname. Its a hybrid now of mine/ my mums/ my dcs surname.

Dc changed theirs too.

I did, I changes it to my then partners, I kept it when we split up, so now my children and husband share me exs name 🤣

I really didn't like my maiden name (it wasn't awful but it wasn't attractive). When I married I took my DH's name but it was a really, really common surname so I wasn't overly enamoured with that either. I've dreamed of being called Devereaux or Montagu or something rather distinguished. On the whole though I'd like to take the name Jackson from my mother's side. It would work with my first name and has a certain ring to it I think.

I’ve always wanted a ‘de’ in my name. De Quincy or similar. Or Plantagenet.

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 30/12/2023 18:37

My maiden name was a very boring -son name being with a letter from near the end of the alphabet. So I always wanted something from near the start of the alphabet and ending with a y or a g so I could do a big curl in my signature. Something like Cassidy or Dunnings.

I went through a phase as a kid of telling everyone my name was Jemima Kirkpatrick (Slightly outing...) not so keen on Jemima these days but I still like Kirkpatrick.

EspressoMacchiato · 30/12/2023 18:41

Grimaldi.

I would get upgraded all the time in case I was “one of those” from the House of Grimaldi 😁

Aaaaardvark

I've always wanted to be at the beginning of the alphabet.

tokesqueen · 30/12/2023 18:42

Ellis or Williams.

DilemmaDelilah · 30/12/2023 18:42

Prideaux. It goes well with my first name.

mangochops · 30/12/2023 18:44

Something Italian like De Luca or Esposito - just sounds sort of powerful and lyrical at the same time

I went to uni with a boy who's middle name was Van. His surname was Hannigan and his parents thought Firstname Van Hannigan sounded cool.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/12/2023 18:46

There's only 13 people worldwide with my maiden name so I'm very glad to have married DH with a very standard surname.

If I had to choose one I've always quite liked Winters or Coltrane.

frozendaisy · 30/12/2023 18:46

Thunderbirds

When I was a kid , for some reason I loved the last name 'Fielding'. I must have seen a programme where someone was called that. As a young teenager I met someone with that name and for months I thought I was destined to one day marry him. Grin

Sudename · 30/12/2023 18:47

Fortescue

PissOffJeffrey · 30/12/2023 18:48

Brilliant question.

Llewelyn or Vaughan.

Both my maiden name & married name are rare but boring.
