If you could change your surname to anything, what would you pick?

My maiden name was relatively rare, but easy enough to spell etc - I had no great desire to hang on to it and adopted my husband’s name without even thinking of not doing so.

But teenage me always wanted a surname beginning with a B, as I loved signing the letter B! So I always imagined fancy surnames like Baudelaire, or even a standard Ballantine.

Now, if I were choosing, I think I would go for something a bit quirky - I dunno, Midwinter or Evensong or something.

My birth name was long and Polish. When I was 17 I changed it to Darnell - my mother suggested it as she felt my career prospects would be held back on job applications with my birth name. This was in the 60s

Gotobed would really suit me😆

I'd also like Featherstonehaugh though. Maybe I'll double-barrel them.

Gryglaszewska.

Then I’d be Pamela Andrea Gryglaszewska. Better than my current surname Shipman.

DeepFriedKermit · 30/12/2023 21:46

Boddington-Smith

haha great thread OP.

Barlow, Owen or Donald. Any of those would be fine by me. Williams as a last resort ...😀

My ex knew a Dr De'ath. He was a local GP. I thought it was hilarious!

Fox - favourite animal
or Green- favourite colour.
So simple, easy to spell and make me smile.

Am I missing the joke here or is it some innuendo that's going over my head :)

Maiden name Scottish but unattractive
First married name relatively rare but unattractive
Now married name boring and unattractive

I'm fucked in the first name and surname stakes tbh.

I'd change both but too late.

alrighthen · 30/12/2023 22:49

Honeychurch for sure! I’d never give that up

Failing that, a boring surname that allows me to give my children adventurous first names while still sounding balanced - like Venus Williams or Quincy/Catherine Zeta Jones. Gorgeous.

It’s the alter ego of Phoebe from Friends

I'm happy with my double-barrelled last name and love that my husband is now also double-barrelled.
Not losing my family name for anyone!

I ordered a key chain that randomly came with the name James on it I thought if I have to run from my abusive ex I would change my surname to James because it goes with all our names and i already have the keyring 😂

MadeOfAllWork · 30/12/2023 23:04

My original name was very long and although it was very English no one could ever spell it. So I said that I would only ever marry a man who had 5 letters or less in his name. My first boyfriend had a Greek surname but every single boyfriend after that only had 5 letters. My surname now is 5 letters long but no one can spell that bastard either.
DH likes my original name so we are thinking of both changing to that in a few years for our silver wedding anniversary.

I once taught two boys who were great friends. One had the surname De’ath and the other was L’Strange. They sounded like they should be TV detectives.

I did change mine, changed it as an adult, to something quite boring but I liked it and everyone can spell it, which was a bonus for calling call centres!

HRTQueen · 30/12/2023 23:12

I like Vaughan

when I was married I double-barrelled my name as I didn’t want to give up my surname. I loved my married name and was sad to let it go (sadder than losing my ex dh)

I clung on for a while in my passport

I would do the same again if I marry again if they have a nice name
