If you could change your surname to anything, what would you pick?

My maiden name was relatively rare, but easy enough to spell etc - I had no great desire to hang on to it and adopted my husband’s name without even thinking of not doing so.

But teenage me always wanted a surname beginning with a B, as I loved signing the letter B! So I always imagined fancy surnames like Baudelaire, or even a standard Ballantine.

Now, if I were choosing, I think I would go for something a bit quirky - I dunno, Midwinter or Evensong or something.

Osment. It's my great great or great great great grandma's surname. Sounds pretty with my first name. I just like the sound of it.

I was never a fan of my birth surname. I changed it when I got married I prefer my married surname but I don't love it.

I quite like Baker - it just sounds good!

Berlinlover · 30/12/2023 18:50

Kennedy or White.

Women have family names. The idea of a 'maiden' name as a signifier of sexual status is one I'm pretty surprised has stuck.

I've never changed and never would. My own name's done me just fine so far in my life.

I’ve always wanted a ‘de’ in my name. De Quincy or similar. Or Plantagenet.

I always wanted a van de.
Had a df at school who’s surname was van de Merwe.

potplant · 30/12/2023 18:53

Hemsworth

or back to my maiden name.

SerafinasGoose · 30/12/2023 18:54

I'm laughing at Aardvark, though! That's a good one.

Honeychurch. But I'd rather it were accidentally my name - birth name or perhaps by marriage. Honeychurch becomes twee if it's deliberately, actively chosen.

Or something really cool sounding - short, staccato and tough without being ugly. Maybe a touch action hero-y.

My real name is beyond mundane.

I saw the surname "Hunnybun" on a very old gravestone once and thought that was a delightful surname, so I'll choose that I think.

We had a Sebastian De Laurent at school. He was beautiful and graceful. His mother was so beautiful that people would find themselves staring at her at pickup. Her DH was an airline pilot and they were honestly living in another world to the rest of us. It was like they were in a French Independent Film and you could almost here Je T'aime Moi Non Plus playing whenever any of them wafted into view.

Long story short I have ALWAYS wanted a 'De' Name. De Winter would be good.

JMAngel1 · 30/12/2023 18:55

I have always wanted to be a Caruthers.
It just sounds so expensive for some reason.
Plus it goes beautifully with my first name - I would sound like a film star 😂

RampantIvy · 30/12/2023 18:56

I liked my maiden name and like my surname, and wouldn't want to change it.

I've had six name changes. Once was opening up the phone book and sticking in a pin!

whiteroseredrose · 30/12/2023 18:59

DH's friend was Summerbell but took her husband's name of Jones. What a shame!

I liked the name Montague until I met a colleague with that name who was a Pratt so put me off.

DessieRay · 30/12/2023 18:59

I’d go for one of either
de Winter
Ogilvie, or
Fox-Smith

DecafOatMilkCappucino · 30/12/2023 19:01

I would pick Garcia as a tribute to my teenage crush on Andy Garcia. He's 67 years old now and I still would.

ChanelNo19EDT · 30/12/2023 19:01

I like Costello,
Kinnella
Gillespie,
Gilchrist
Valentine

I know people in my life with these names some close, some just acquaintances.

I like Italian surnames too but that might be harder to pull off if I needed a new name for witness protection programme.

Paloma Piaccentini sounds great to me. Spanitalian!. But that would not fly under the radar if the FBI were after me

QuestBloomingdale · 30/12/2023 19:01

Vanderkamp
