6am Quality Street diet

Helenahandkart · 27/12/2023 06:36

Perimenopausal insomnia means I’m sitting in the couch at 6am eating Quality Street musing about all the people who say that they’re starting their diets today.
How is it possible to start a diet on the 27th? Do these people not have any Christmas chocolate?
I have a fridge full of cream and Baileys, there are peanuts and Twiglets everywhere, and mountains and mountains of chocolate and sweets and gingerbread houses - most of which were given to us as presents. Any plans to diet are postponed until we’ve worked our way through it all.
Do the dieters just throw it all in the bin? And not go to any new year parties?

Fuck me. The Lecturing Massive Saladers are all up and about early, probably busy taking their decorations down and exercising at fifty times the usual speed to work off the steamed sprouts.

OP, you crack on. Diet starts here on 2nd Jan. Christmas doesn't actually finish until 12th night (6th Jan?) so enjoy your treats.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/12/2023 08:05

You put it better than me, @Alighttouchonthetiller! Xmas Grin

nutster · 27/12/2023 08:07

OP you sound to me like you’ve very much lost your way with regard to health, diet and sleep.

or… not clearly chronically sleep deprived, overweight and consuming too much sugar and not used to just feeling shit most of the time.

This was only supposed to be a lighthearted thread wondering about what, specifically, dieters do with all the Christmas chocolate. Why they decide to start today (when there’s still often lots of junk food sitting around) rather than in a week’s time when it’s easier to resist that temptation.

@LaChienneDesFromages I’m not ‘gobbling’ anything. Why are you using that sort of language to shame people? I’ve just had a few Quality Streets. And I can honestly say that eating a balanced Med diet really doesn’t make me feel any better. I’m glad it works for you though.

I reckon I will wait until February to start healthy eating.

Between us my dp and I have 12 boxes of chocolates of all types as gifts.

It will take some eating on top of all the cheeses and party food in the fridge/freezer.

But eat it all we shall ... 😁

For the record:
all year round I eat a balanced diet full of good quality protein, with lots of varied vegetables. I drink decaf tea. I occasionally eat chocolate or cake - usually at a special occasion.
Despite this I suffer from menopausal insomnia.
I do not have chronic ill health.
I am not overweight.
At Christmas I have a few days of indulgence.

Jeez you lot giving 'advice' or criticism, it's a lighthearted question!!! Have a few chocolates or something 🙄

😂

I suppose i just think that so much of my happiness is derived from feeling healthy, eating well and sleeping well, and i suppose i do get a touch evangelical about it.

I will bow out!

OK I know this is completely missing the point of the thread but walking at 4am each morning must be killing you! Have you tried HRT? It should help. If not magnesium is good too.

This is a killer..am always awake between 4 and 5 ☹ am on magnesium, zinc, evening prim oil and B complex and doctor looking at HRT for new year

ExpensiveDecorations · 27/12/2023 08:18

I switched to low carb high protein/fat eating 18 months ago and have gradually lost 2 stone. I have been eating carbs fairly freely in the last week but have kept going with green veg and salad too and am planning to ease back off the sweet stuff over the next couple of weeks, we have got mountains of it too. Any I do eat will be straight after the main meal and then followed by a walk whenever possible to minimise the impact.

LynetteScavo · 27/12/2023 08:18

So far this morning I've eaten two pieces of stollen and two pieces of large Toblerone. I was woken up at 6am by DS and his friend who rolled in after clubbing all night. Today is not the day to resume low calorie eating.

nutster · 27/12/2023 08:18

OP on another thread you wax lyrical about losing 3 stone on a mediterranean diet and how great it made you feel!!

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 27/12/2023 08:19

I have never heard of anyone starting a diet on 27th December 🤔

Surely if you're going down that route, you start on Monday 1st January - that's the perfect day this year. The first day of the year and a Monday 👍

Thank you!
I’m taking HRT and magnesium glycinate but sadly neither of them have helped with the insomnia.
It’s weird how you can get used to having no sleep, though I do feel like I’m definitely not functioning at my best.

She's also allowed to indulge at Christmas! Why are you searching for her posts? That's weird.

I find diet culture to be really toxic, I’m quite happy with my chocolates! I’m finding it harder to eat them in moderation now that I’m pregnant and roaming around the house inhaling what I can find, though….

It's not diet culture though, a balanced unprocessed diet is the normal for humans, why you think it's toxic is odd.

OP as long as you're happy who cares!

That’s what I would think as well (or maybe a couple of days later to allow for a NYE hangover) but there are several threads on here about diets starting on 27th.

I started weight watchers online about a month ago and have managed to stay within my limits over Christmas while still indulging in baileys in my coffee/chocolate/desserts etc, this is the first time in my life where I have managed moderation and resisted over eating! So I am not starting a diet, but I am sticking to one :)

Have you tried magnesium for sleep OP - magnesium bath salts, plus magnesium spray before bed have worked wonders for me.

Pamcakey · 27/12/2023 08:22

Happily my partners birthday is on the 8th Jan so it’s always pointless starting a diet before then.

Its the perfect time as by then, all the leftovers are gone and we have a clear run until my birthday in a few months time.

Diet culture doesn't necessarily equal having / discussing 'a balanced unprocessed diet' though. You're discussing your diet, not 'diet culture', there's a difference.

Previously I lost 3 stone on a med diet. It made me feel great being lighter. It was a long while ago. I still eat a predominantly med diet because I know it’s supposed to be good for me, but when I eat junk food I don’t feel any worse.

My house is full of food I have been avoiding bread (!) / mince pies / Christmas cake / boxes of chocolates / wine / trifle / cream but the thing that is tempting me the most is a box of 'fancy nuts' !!

Have been doing slimming world since September and all this stuff will have to go when our guests leave today - either with them or redistributed somehow!
