I love to get the decorations down on Boxing Day and get back to normal.
A bit of a clean and a good reset.
Ready to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in!

Mine stays till the day after new year . It’s still Christmas in our house

MrsMurphyIWish · 26/12/2023 08:13

We didn’t even have decorations this year! 6 months into a massive building project so our lounge has also been our kitchen since June. I thought I’d miss it but haven't, even our DCs (12 and 9) haven’t mentioned it either not even “where will the presents go?”. May not bother next year. Can not wait to get the oven and washing machine out the lounge though!

rockingbird · 26/12/2023 08:15

I keep mine up for Boxing Day then we get back to normal.. I have two boys with autism - much older now, but this used to cause us such heightened anxiety that putting it up and taking it down as soon as possible was a good thing!! I've stuck with it.. I'm not a fan of all the Christmas tat ☺️ so quite happy with that.

For me it's different if decorations didn't get up for some reason.

It's strange and probably illogical but I find it more soulless and joyless to be whipping them down today to 'move on' to the next thing, than someone who just didn't want them up or didn't get a chance.

bearsbeets2 · 26/12/2023 08:20

Mine will be down 27th or 28th. We have a small house, furniture has to be moved around to even fit in a Christmas tree and it’s DDs birthday a few days before as well. My house is bursting with stuff so I need the clear out!

Isthisblocked · 26/12/2023 08:20

Mine went up 1st Cec but it is coming down on Thursday….lots of work straight after New Year and a family funeral….just need to get organised for the post Christmas onslaught

gotomomo · 26/12/2023 08:21

No! It's still Christmas!

12th night here

Bemyclementine · 26/12/2023 08:23

God no. Mine will often be up the whole of January. We all love it.

qpalbfy · 26/12/2023 08:23

No that is joyless and would break my kids' hearts! Ours stays up until we are back to work usually when we do the Big Clean (I do love that fresh start feeling!), so after NY.

TattyBaubles · 26/12/2023 08:24

I thought this was going to be a thread about the wind!

Not me, mine stays up until the twelfth night. I’m away until the 9th this year, might leave it up til the end of Christmastide this year which I think is 13th January.

grayhairdontcare · 26/12/2023 08:26

Tree is down every year on Boxing Day evening.

Imnotarestaurant · 26/12/2023 08:27

FindingMeno · 26/12/2023 07:08

I agree.
I cannot understand keeping a tree up into the new year/ till the 12th night when you're back at work and everything.
Normal life resumes here tomorrow.

I cannot understand wanting to spend Boxing Day cleaning when it should be a day for relaxing, eating leftovers and letting the kids play with their new toys.

gotomomo · 26/12/2023 08:27

I'm thinking about leaving the tree and just the white lights until candlemas, 2nd feb but mine didn't go up until 15th December

EverySporkIsSacred · 26/12/2023 08:27

DH wants to take everything down ASAP (so we can clean as Christmas decorations always attract so much dust and it bothers him) but every year we wait until after the last visitor has been and gone and since I didn't feel at all Christmassy until Christmas Eve I'm hoping he can be persuaded to leave it up until New Year. At that point I'll be ready for a fresh start myself too.

mangochops · 26/12/2023 08:29

I'm with you OP- often take it down on BD. The apocalypse hasn't happened yet as a result and my kids are teens so couldn't give a toss

RainbowUtensils · 26/12/2023 08:30

Nope nope nope. Tree went up 1st December, it's staying up til 6th January. It's a real tree, so don't think it'll quite last til Candlemas, but might keep our outside lights up.

willowstar · 26/12/2023 08:31

We put ours up on Christmas eve. I will take it down probably tomorrow or Thursday. Christmas is just a few days in this house. My children have little trees in their rooms that they do whatever they like with.

DitheringBlidiot · 26/12/2023 08:31

SnapdragonToadflax · 26/12/2023 06:53

This can only be a goady thread, no-one takes their tree down on Boxing Day.

I do 🤣

But I haven't put one up this year at all.

PincNeon · 26/12/2023 08:31

They’re aggressively proud of doing it like it’s a big virtue to be ‘getting back on with it’ on Boxing Day and they absolutely consider the tree to be clutter by the end of Christmas Day which just feels joyless.

Yep, it’s the brisk no-nonsense tone of posts like this that always get me. Give me clutter and gaudy baubles any day over an urge to be spick and span so strong you’re itching to tidy first thing on a bank holiday.

Chicca1970 · 26/12/2023 08:33

New Year’s Eve! Whatever suits - you enjoy your day OP - Merry Christmas & a prosperous & healthy 2024 🍾🙌🥳🎊

icouldhavebeensomeone · 26/12/2023 08:34

Tree down Tomorrow for Us! DH hates that I take everything down but with all the tons of toys currently cluttering the Living room I feel so claustrophobic otherwise!

Grimpo · 26/12/2023 08:35

There are 12 days of Christmas. Taking stuff down on Boxing Day is so boring and joyless.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 26/12/2023 08:35

Weedoormatnomore · 26/12/2023 07:02

We are the same as that's the traditional way.

Same here, tree/decorations get taken down on 12th Night. We always put them up together on Christmas Eve. At least the last 5 generations of my family have held this tradition that im aware of.

LadyEloise1 · 26/12/2023 08:35

Our Christmas tree stays up til after the 6th of January which in Ireland is called Little Christmas or Nollaig na mBan ( Women's Christmas ).
I always take the wreath off the door and all decorations down on the 7th.
It's a tradition in Ireland that is sadly dying out.
Probably because people are back to work and want to get things back to "normal ".
I don't put the tree and decorations up till the week before Christmas though.

Katypp · 26/12/2023 08:35

I find it quite sad and a reflection of the times we live in that people seemingly get so easily bored and wants to rush on to the next thing so quickly.
I can understand it there are space issues although frankly my response to this would be to buy a tree that was appropriate to the size you have.
Christmas has definitely shifted though - now it's all about the run-up to it whereas in my childhood, it didn't really start until Christmas Eve and everyone kept their tree up until around 12th night.
