Are your ears pierced?

My niece has just had her ears pierced. She is 27.

I remember having mine done at aged 11.
Most of DCs friends are having theirs done at the start of the primary school summer holidays so have the six weeks to heal.

Do you have your ears pierced? How old were you?
What about your DCs?
As a parent, should it your choice, or theirs?

I've had my done three times, around aged 15, 29 and 35. DD was around 13. Surely, it has to be their choice if they want it done or not.

GigiAnnna · 22/12/2023 15:47

Had mine done about 12. One of my daughters had them done at 6 but they never healed properly so I Iet them close over. Other daughter doesn't want them done.

PiggieWig · 22/12/2023 15:47

I had mine done at 14, 15 and 16, cartilage at 16 and my nose done at 16. My dad was really strict about it, but when I realised I could do what I wanted to my body I went a bit mad. That was 30 odd years ago and I haven’t regretted it.

Yes, I had mine done at 11 then a second hole at 20 ish. My choice but parents kind of said no until my 11th birthday so ultimately their choice. No girl DC so no experience of that.

flexigirl · 22/12/2023 15:49

Not my ears but my daith, belly button, septum and nipples , all done in adulthood. I've never been keen on ear piercings but mum gave the option at around 11 yo

Auntieobem · 22/12/2023 15:50

Can't remember what age I was when I had mine done 11 or 12 probably. Dd2 had hers done when she was about 10, but they closed up and she had them redone when she was 13. Dd1 had hers done when she was 20.

And it's their choice - bodily autonomy is v v important

Changingplace · 22/12/2023 15:51

I first had mine done when I was about 7, I remember plucking up the courage to ask my mum, thinking I’d have to plead for it and she just said yeah you can and off we went into town that weekend :)

Ive now got three piercings in each lobe, a tragus and conch piercing in one ear and forward helix in the other.

Alwaystired2023 · 22/12/2023 15:51

Had mine done at 2! Maybe a bit younger!

Would be open to let DC have theirs pierced, not set age but just whenever they asked and could articulate why they wanted them done etc.

whosaidtha · 22/12/2023 15:52

I was 11. My dd was 7. She'd been asking for over a year and she likes them. Made Xmas shopping this year easier.

reluctantbrit · 22/12/2023 15:52

I had mine pierced at 11 and 12 and then realised I have a severe nickle allergy.

Got it re-pierced with 35 put wear only planinum, steel or titanium studs.

DD got her first piercing at 10, I didn't want any fuss with it, she had to be able to sort them out fully on her own so we didn't allow it any earlier.

She had a second lobe piercing with 14 and her nose pierced with 16 now.

Laiste · 22/12/2023 15:53

I finally had mine done in my early 20s.

I allowed my DDs to at the start of secondary.

Please don't have primary aged kids pierced. They're not able to look after them and all the taping them up/taking them out for PE is a pain they really dont't need when they're little. The amount of crusty sore ears at our primary school .....

RuthW · 22/12/2023 15:55

Yes- first hoke aged 13 and second shed 14.

Dd is 27 and doesn't have hers done.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/12/2023 15:57

A friend did one at age twelve (sterilized stud lent to me and two ice cubesShock)!
Then the other to be a bridesmaid at 14. Same method. Mine healed perfectly and are still open in spite of wearing earrings about twice a year.

DD (17) has asked to have her ears pierced as a Christmas present. She’ll be going to a professional.

TallulahBetty · 22/12/2023 15:58

Yes, 14 times in total. My lobes were done at 10. Should ALWAYS be the child's choice, and ALWAYS with a needle, NEVER a gun.

helpme5 · 22/12/2023 15:58

Yes I have mine pierced and eldest DD had them done just before her 8th birthday.

SqueezyMcJingles · 22/12/2023 15:59

Yea. I had mine done at the jewellers when I was about 8, and then again at Claire's when I was 18.

One of my dc has ear piercings done at the piercing salon with a needle.

MargaretThursday · 22/12/2023 16:00

I had mine done at the same time as dd1, so I would have been about 30yo.

devildeepbluesea · 22/12/2023 16:00

I was 13.

DD had hers done last year aged nearly 10 and contrary to what a PP has written, looked after them religiously and they’re now fully healed and clear. We were going to wait til end yr6 but she was desperate and when I thought about it I didn’t have a good reason to object.

fedupwithbeinghot · 22/12/2023 16:01

Yes, done at the hospital the day I was born. The second piercing was done when I was at university

squishysquashy · 22/12/2023 16:01

No. Had them pierced at 13 but let them grow over shortly after so no piercings now. DC age 13 hasn't asked.

helpme5 · 22/12/2023 16:01

Just to add, initially I took DDs out on PE days and put back in after school but after a couple of months she was confidently taking them in and out herself. Never any issues with them being sore either.

munchmagic · 22/12/2023 16:04

Yes I got mine done at age 12 with the gun, my daughter had hers done age 8 with the needle at a proper piercing place. I think it needs to be a mix of parent and child choice- so deciding if you feel they are ready and then giving them the option if they'd like it done.

PandaG · 22/12/2023 16:07

I was 10, in year 5, which looking back on it was a bit young, especially as younger sis had them done at the same time and couldn't look after them herself.

DD was told she could have hers done at 13, but I secretly persuaded her dad to let her have them done at the end of y6, as I thought most of her friends would do, and I didn't want her to be left out. She was delighted when I sprung the surprise on her, but I did then say no more until she was an adult.... But if she'd asked at 13 or so for further ear piercings I would have said yes, as it is her body and she'd proved she could look after them. She didn't ask, but got a second lobe piercing at 20. She's planning her first tattoo!

Laiste · 22/12/2023 16:09

@devildeepbluesea i know it's a divisive issue, there's been bun fights on here about it before 😂

10s ok and most folk know if their kid's old enough to look after them or not.

The troubles are usually in the yr 1, 2 and 3 littlies.

Scampuss · 22/12/2023 16:22

First set of holes at 7, second at 11, then did a third in one ear around 15ish.

My mum had hers done at birth.
