Are your ears pierced?

My niece has just had her ears pierced. She is 27.

I remember having mine done at aged 11.
Most of DCs friends are having theirs done at the start of the primary school summer holidays so have the six weeks to heal.

Do you have your ears pierced? How old were you?
What about your DCs?
As a parent, should it your choice, or theirs?

@fedupwithbeinghot this blows my mind. Is it maybe a cultural thing? I can't imagine the NHS letting a literal new born be pierced.

I was born abroad in the 1970s. Although to be honest, even now in my country, baby girls wear earrings.

I agree that it seems barbaric, and if I had had a girl, I would not have done it

Mine are. Have been since about 15/16 or so. My daughter had hers done in October. She's 10 and asked if she could have them done, I didn't see a problem with it.
Some of her friends have theirs pierced, had them done when they were very young.

I had mine pierced when I was 12 although I very rarely wear earrings nowadays. I ended up taking them out cos they were irritating me during the night. Studs just stabbed me and small hoops would get tangled up in my hair whilst I was sleeping. Now I only tend to wear them if I go out for a nice meal or something which isn't very often and I have to practically force the earrings in. I also had my bellybutton pierced when I was 15 although I managed to rip that out a few years later when I caught it on the massive buckle of a belt I was wearing. I took it out to for about a week and couldn't get it fully back in after that. I can get a bar in underneath and a bar in through the top, but the middle part is fully healed over. Now I just have a scar and a weird line with a pin prick hole inside it. It is one piercing I would love to have done again although at the moment I have way too much belly fat for that to happen.

Wow just finished reading through everyone’s comments, so many different experiences!

@StoatofDisarray I’m so sorry this brought back such a horrific memory for you. I hope you are in a better place now x 💐

@Laiste I didn’t know it was a contentious topic, I was just curious, I have missed all the bunfights then 😂

My DCs are upper primary aged, but as yet, the subject hasn’t come up, even though quite a few of their friends have had it done.
Was quietly pleased for my self niece as that now means I have another avenue to go down when buying gifts 😄

Exactly!!! My last ones took months! And when I had my first ones done at 12, I waited an extra week before I put my new silver sleepers in... And within seconds, one had swelled up so bad, I couldn't get the earring out!!! These newest ones are ok now, but took so long, I was going to go back to the studio!

You could try earrings with a flat back. They won't stab you, and as long as they're correctly sized for you then they shouldn't get tangled.

No. They're hideous, a huge metal spike thrust through a delicate part of your flesh while some chunk of metal dangles and stretches the tissue. Blergh.

More female pain and disfigurement for stupid beauty crap.

I wasn’t allowed to have my ears pierced as a child, I think I asked and was told no, this was about 8 or 9. Most of my friends had had them done by the age of 11 and I think DM even kicked back then saying no. I then had my ears pierced when I was 18, a female colleague about the same age as me in my work went with me to have this done at the ear piercing place in the department store in the town where we worked.
