Are your ears pierced?

My niece has just had her ears pierced. She is 27.

I remember having mine done at aged 11.
Most of DCs friends are having theirs done at the start of the primary school summer holidays so have the six weeks to heal.

Do you have your ears pierced? How old were you?
What about your DCs?
As a parent, should it your choice, or theirs?

I first had mine done at 12, a cartilage piercing in one at 15 and then a second piecing in both lobes at 40. My daughter, aged 10, is desperate to have hers done, I didn't let her before as I felt she wouldn't be able to take them out herself for PE (school won't allow them to just be taped over). I've said she can have them done at the start of the summer holidays next year so that they have time to heal before going back to school for year 7.

Mid-40s, don’t have pierced ears. When I was 12 I kind of wanted to be able to wear earrings but was too squeamish and by late teens I wasn’t arsed about it enough to be bothered.

CurlewKate · 22/12/2023 19:44

I had mine done at around 20. Dd and ds both at 16. They had to be old enough to go by themselves.

I had mine done at 14. Had them done again around 20, but have let the 2nd ones heal up.

I don’t have kids but I hate seeing babies or small kids with pierced ears. When I rule the world, it would be illegal until the child is old enough to ask for it and look after the piercings themselves. Realistically about 10 or 11.

Singleandproud · 22/12/2023 20:43

Mid 30s. No, my mum never got my ears pierced. Much to my GMum and aunts disdain as they thought I should have had them done when small and the only piercing I have is my bellybutton done when I was 17, I took it out when pregnant with DD at 23.

For DD my rule is she can't have anything permanent done to her body until she is 18, once she reaches 18 she can do as she pleases but my job is to get her there in one piece.

googledidnthelp · 22/12/2023 21:00

M had them done on my 6th birthday and I was sooo excited!

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/12/2023 21:04

I'm mid/late thirties and have no piercings at all, ears or otherwise. Have just never wanted to or even really seriously considered it to be honest. It's only very recently that I've casually wondered if it might add something to outfits but I still wouldn't go as far as to say I'd go and do it.

Bumply · 22/12/2023 21:05

I'm 61 and never had my ears or anything else pierced.
Just didn't appeal to me

BarbaraBuncle · 22/12/2023 21:08

Yes, when I was 18.

Had a second piercing in both ears in my early 30s, but haven't put earrings in them in recent years. Now late 50s. DD isn't interested in getting hers done.

annahay · 22/12/2023 21:31

I have many ear piercings and my nose pierced. I've had others in the past but they've been retired.

I cannot understand why people still think 6 weeks is long enough for piercings to fully heal.

Hermanfromguesswho · 22/12/2023 21:33

I had mine done at 4 months old. My daughter had hers done at 11 when she asked.

Florabella · 22/12/2023 21:35

I had mine pierced for the first time this year at the grand old age of 52!!!

OctoblocksAssemble · 22/12/2023 21:37

Nope, wasn't allowed to, then went off the idea. As far as I'm concerned the kids can wait until they're 16 and the taping them for PE issue has gone away. Also at 16 I won't be responsible for any infections that ensue.

bakewellbride · 22/12/2023 21:41

I got mine done as a teen but only because I wasn't bothered before.

Got a dd of my own now, I think around maybe 11 or 12 I'd allow it but no younger personally.

Stress101 · 22/12/2023 21:55

Yes, I'm in my 40s and had my ears pierced when I was 3 months

ChocolateCinderToffee · 22/12/2023 21:56

Yep. 18th birthday money. I don't wear earrings that often to be honest, but it's nice to have the option.

prettygreenteacup · 22/12/2023 22:05

I have 9 in my ears all together and my nose pierced. First lobes done when I was almost 10, none of the others until my 30s! I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't let my DD's have them haha. But I want to make sure they'd handle the actual piercing and the pain and aftercare. Eldest is 8 and she's happy to wait a while longer to get them done.

salamithumbs · 22/12/2023 22:06

Yes, got them pierced at 8 or 9. They closed over a few times so I repierced them myself 😬
Got my bellybutton done around 14, think you had to be 16 though.. I remember lying about my age and I had to go to a few places before I found somewhere that would take me

sparkedsparkle · 22/12/2023 22:20

Think mine were done at about 5, I did my dd when she was 18m - yeah I know throw me the hate mumsnetters BlushGrin

bakewellbride · 22/12/2023 22:30

A mum at my son's school tried to get her dd to have it done at nursery age but she ran out of the shop after only one ear had been done. The mum laughed at having to 'drag dd back the next day for the other ear' so sad!

DrCoconut · 22/12/2023 22:34

I don't really remember having them
done. I was 2. My mum waited for some reason and I apparently said I wanted them so I got them done. All girls in our family (I was the last one born) have had earrings from very young. My boys haven't expressed any interest but if they did I wouldn't have a problem with it. I would likely be the same if I'd had a girl - up to them.

Applerumleandcustard · 22/12/2023 22:37

I had mine done when I was about 14 ( at my grandmas house , in the dining room , one of her neighbours was a jewellery shop owner and had all the kit ) with my 2 sisters and my mum as an audience!
DSis had hers done by a friend ( the aforementioned ice cube and needle trick , she can now only wear expensive earrings )
DD had hers done at 5 , at Claire’s , all was fine

ReadyForPumpkins · 22/12/2023 22:45

I had mine done young, before I could remember. I haven’t worn earrings since university. I let my children choose so DC1 had hers pierced the summer after year 6. I will not take a 4yo to have her ears pierced.

Heartbreaktuna · 22/12/2023 22:49

@fedupwithbeinghot this blows my mind. Is it maybe a cultural thing? I can't imagine the NHS letting a literal new born be pierced.

HRTQueen · 22/12/2023 23:10

Yes
I was 3 and still only have one set of holes
ds is getting his ear pierced tomorrow (15)

I love little girls with earrings it’s so cute and if I had a dd I would have got her ears pierced from 4/5 (if she wanted it) I realise I’m in the minority and considered common 🙄 by some on here
