Are your ears pierced?

My niece has just had her ears pierced. She is 27.

I remember having mine done at aged 11.
Most of DCs friends are having theirs done at the start of the primary school summer holidays so have the six weeks to heal.

Do you have your ears pierced? How old were you?
What about your DCs?
As a parent, should it your choice, or theirs?

I was 34. Then I inherited several hundred pairs of earrings from an aunt, almost all of which I love, nothing expensive but I wore a different pair every day in the lockdowns.

Dragonsandcats · 22/12/2023 17:59

My dd did at 10 as i’d heard the secondary school were really strict about pe- can’t take your earrings out = no pe and i knew this would stress her out. Good job as it took her a while to practice taking them in out and out, and they took a year before she could leave them out for a day or more. Otherwise they started to close. I had mine done about 14 i think.

I remember at age 6 I BEGGED to have my ears pierced because a girl on my street had hers done (she was 5). I'm coming up on 32 now and I'm soooo glad I wasn't allowed. I don't need the faff of deciding what earrings to wear, and honestly piercings gross me out. I can't even watch needles from syringes go in, be it real or on tv. Oddly enough I'm fine with tattoos.

In summary, children don't know what they want or what's best for them.

I was about 13 when I had mine pierced (around 1980-81). Unfortunately the holes lengthened and became slits and the earrings were very close to falling out the bottom of my earlobes, so I had to let them close. They were done in a very reputable jeweller's in the old, traditional way. My mum and sister had theirs done on the same day and they were fine. A couple of years later I went and had them redone with a gun (a pretty new thing back then) and they were fine. No idea what went wrong the first time, except that the earrings I chose were possibly a bit too heavy, or they were pierced too close to the end of the lobes (or a bit of both). I do have ridiculously small earlobes🤣

Just before my 30th birthday, when I was travelling in Australia (so wasn't able to give blood for a while anyway, becauseI'd beenin malarial countries.)

I was desperate to have them done as a child, but Mum wouldn't let me. Then by 18, I was too busy swimming all the time, was a regular blood donor and just didn't bother.

When I got home from travelling, my mother said they really suited me, and she should have made me have them pierced years ago. I did not say anything.

Ambi · 22/12/2023 18:08

Yes, I was 18m old so don't remember it. I let my own DD have hers pierced at 11 (by a proper piercer in a tattoo shop), she didn't look after them properly, they got infected and they've healed over. She won't bother again.

GarlicGiftsAndGlitter · 22/12/2023 18:12

Late 20s, like your niece. I wasn't that bothered about earrings until then, got pierced when I wanted to wear them.

Now I'm unbothered again, I've had the same gold studs in for 6 years 😂

Beezknees · 22/12/2023 18:12

Had my ears pierced at 11. Second holes done at 12, 3rd holes done at 13. Then I got my belly button pierced at 14, tragus pierced at 15 and nose pierced at 17. Added tongue and nipple piercings as an adult.

I don't actually even wear earrings any more apart from my tragus, and I took out the belly button one when I was pregnant and it healed over.

I don't have DDs and DS isn't interested in getting any piercings but I'd let him if he wanted them. He's 15. It is not a big deal to me, I'm heavily tattooed as well.

LSTMS30555 · 22/12/2023 18:12

I was about 1 had my Dt's ears done at 8 months.

GenXisthebest · 22/12/2023 18:15

I was 14, DD was 14 too.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/12/2023 18:27

I had mine done when I was about 12. An earring got stuck in the back of my ear so they healed and I had them done again but never wore earrings so had them done again at 25. Had second piercing at 39

idontlikealdi · 22/12/2023 18:31

Done at 11, took them and they closed up. Reported at 17 but didn't really wear earrings. Was able to replace myself around 22 and just wore studs. Not at 44 I have 3 helix and doubles on each lobe mid life crisis

Nottodaty · 22/12/2023 18:32

Yes - I think I was around 6 months old. I rarely wear earrings and they’ve never closed up!

We gave our children the choice my eldest had hers done when she was 12 my youngest now 14 still to scared!

persisted · 22/12/2023 18:44

Really wanted them done in my early teens, mum wouldn't let me as she didn't like jt, said I could do what I wanted when I was 18. So the weekend after my 18th birthday my friend paid for it as a birthday present. Still don't understand why she thought it was such a big deal.

Got the top of my ear pierced when I was 40 and love it. Although it took a lot longer to heal than I thought it would which puts me off another cartilage one.

Simonjt · 22/12/2023 18:45

I had mine done as a baby. Our son is eight and had his done this summer after much nagging. I had my nose done when I was 12.

gerteddy · 22/12/2023 18:46

Mine were done at age 2. Never had to be redone and I wear earrings daily now.

My DD got hers done in summer aged 6. She had been asking for about 2years and quite a few of her friends had already got them done. There were even some kids at nursery age 3 or 4 that had them done hence why she was asking.

restingrichface · 22/12/2023 18:48

I've got quite a few ear piercings now but I got my first set of lobes done when I was 15.

LaPalmaLlama · 22/12/2023 18:50

I got mine done at 12 I think. DD got hers when she was 10 (summer between Year 5 and Year 6). She is Year 7 now and one of a handful to have pierced ears in her year. But the year above is majority have at least one ear piercing.

It seems to be much less of a big deal/ signifier of growing up these days - it's all about first phone now

KingofCats · 22/12/2023 18:50

I was about 10. Don’t remember any drama. Then many additional ear piercings done myself. Belly button at 15.

DD1 and DD3 both with a needle at a proper place aged 10. DD1 has since given herself more ear piercings but I wouldn’t let her get her bellybutton done at 15. She’s nearly 17 now and I’m not sure if she’s had it done!
DD2 is 13 but doesn’t want hers done.

AngeloMysterioso · 22/12/2023 18:51

First lobe piercings aged 6

IncompleteSenten · 22/12/2023 18:52

I think the first time I was 12 maybe. They got infected and I took them out. Tried again a couple of years later and the same thing happened. I followed all the care instructions faithfully both times.

I didn't bother trying again.

Notimeforidiots69 · 22/12/2023 18:52

My first ear piercings were at a jewellers, at age 12, can of freezing gas for each ear, bled like hell had nothing but problems with them!
My second I did myself at 17, no problems at all.
This year, at the age of 54, I've had my third done!!!
But I think anything beyond 12/13 is the right age, then the child can choose themselves.
My absolute bugbear is to see babies and small children with their ears pierced. I think it's revolting! But each to their own...

BillieEyelash1 · 22/12/2023 18:57

I had them done when I was 10mo and apparently pulled them out until they closed over
At around six I wanted them done so had them done
Had my seconds done just after I turned 16 then my thirds and nose done once that had healed over.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 22/12/2023 18:57

I had mine done at 6 weeks old 😱 traditional in my parents culture. I don’t wear earrings much but my holes are still there. I’m 47, so mid seventies they were pierced. DDs don’t have theirs done and they’re 12 and 14. They’re not that interested.

Countrybumpkinn · 22/12/2023 19:01

Nope! (44)
