I saw my postie today after not seeing one for weeks and asked whats been happening with the mail recently. He took out his ear phones and wouldn't stop talking.

He said that its chaos at the depot, they are being giving thousand of letter to post and when you complain they say ai don't care what you do with them, dont bring them back.

They are also being told to prioritize parcels and that letters aren't important. People are quiting or going off sick so the RM are having to hire agency workers who are dumping letters in bushes and quiting within days.

I haven't had post in over 3 week. I have only noticed as I'm waiting to recieve 2 v.important letters that were sent 3 and 2 weeks ago. So who knows how long its been going on.

I have phoned the help line and been told that 50% off the staff in my local depot are either sick or absent and that they have shut down certain postcodes to deliveries. They said after the complaint I will recieve post within 72hr. It never happened and I've had to complain again.

If you search online you will see I'm not the only one. It seems to be happening nationwide in cities and rural areas. The issue is that RM are denying that there is an issue.

They are suppose to deliver post to every postcode Monday to Saturday and now I've been told that they are closing down certain postcodes over the phone but then denying it on social media.

I still didn't get my mail today so I'm starting to wonder if I'm one if the people whobhave had their letters dumped.

Oh and we keep getting mail for an address in Bristol - same road name but different number - we don't even live in Bristol.. last week we got 3 for them. We also keep getting post for a house about 15 minutes walk away - same house number different road name - sick of taking it over but it's clearly things like bank cards

Our post keeps going missing - presumably it's in Bristol

Skimm · 19/12/2023 19:42

I'm in West London.

This has been the case in my area for best part of a year. Letters are delivered in bundles once a fortnight, parcels are prioritised, very short of staff but not allowed to recruit any more. I get that parcels are more lucrative, but other providers are cheaper and more reliable; as they're the only ones that deliver letters (which aren't going anywhere just yet even with the Internet) it seems odd they're not bothering with those. The price of stamps is wild and all! Quite a few people locally have said that they have had fines delivered late so had to pay more, of course royal mail aren't bothered.

PermanentTemporary · 19/12/2023 19:43

What kills me us that some arse who 'stood up to the unions' and achieved sacking lots of people will have moved on to another job earning 3x what a ft postie works, leaving a trail of chaos behind.

Frankly if an organisation ever reaches the point of a strike they're already failing and the managers should be on a final warning until they come up with a solution that involves retaining experienced staff.

Iamnotagingerbread · 19/12/2023 19:45

I’ve not had any post for about 5 days. Which is unheard of in December. Very interesting to read this as I now think I know why!

EmmaEmerald · 19/12/2023 19:45

Same where I live, but why do you think an expose is coming?

I moved home and paid for post redirect.

Initially it all went to my old address. I complained and then it just didn't arrive anywhere. So I expect a whole bunch of stuff is just sitting at the depot or got binned.

I then got money back on the redirect, very easily, because they know they aren't doing it.

Mum lives a short walk away and her postie told me they don't have enough staff but hers is better since they all complained. There were some redundancies and some posties got put on different rounds with no explanation.

We've now complained in my block of flats and after that, get post about once a fortnight, but that's only happened twice so I don't know if it will keep on.

Couple of neighbours missed important deliveries which allegedly went back to the sorting office, but when they visited the office, there was no sign of them.

They have also cut the sorting office opening hours back drastically.

I can only guess it's the usual story of not enough posties and a shit ton of directors who dream up the "QR code stamp" type nonsense.

LakeTiticaca · 19/12/2023 18:52

A recruitment drive perhaps?
Or would that be too obvious 🤔

Or not have fucked up all the contracts and hours making it a shit place to work now.

too much pressure put on the posties

i know one very well who was reduced to tears at a resident they deliver to not getting certain post

some sorting offices can’t even sort as the frames are still full

Stellium · 19/12/2023 19:48

Yeah, I have someone who is missing loads of letters, some very important letters too from the DWP regarding PIP! The address is correct and PIP just say they've sent them so they can't do anything about it, but he just isn't getting post when he should. Things turn up months later.

Stillwaitingfor · 19/12/2023 19:56

In in London and our post is awful. It's been getting worse and worse.

Skimm · 19/12/2023 19:59

The postman said a programme was going to come out about it thats why I think its about to get exposed.

I have noticed over the last few months that I only get post on Tuesday and Friday. It took me a while to realise this,so I started monitoring it, thinking it was just a coincidence, but sure enough,it was only Tuesday and Friday that mail arrived. And its alway quite a few items each time, like it's been saved up! Very odd.

Pretty much the same here. Taking a week to get a first class letter. God knows why we are paying so much for stamps when letters not getting delivered.

NeurodivergentBurnout · 19/12/2023 20:02

I work in healthcare and I’d estimate about 40% of our letters are getting lost - appointments or letters following appointments. I’ve been pushing for our team to use the digital portal that sends a text so you can see the letter online wherever possible.

1984Winston · 19/12/2023 20:10

We have the same postman so our post isn't too bad but in my job we send out our product by post and the amount of customers ringing saying they haven't received it is ridiculous, it's a massive problem

Skimm · 19/12/2023 19:59

I'm amazed your postman had time to stand around chatting to you

Morecushionsplease · 19/12/2023 20:21

I also run a business which relies on letters. I've been telling my customers for the last 6 months that 1st Class can take up to 10 business days as I suspected they were prioritising parcels instead. There are no other couriers that I can send my product with as they are too small and people wouldn't pay courier prices. If things don't change then I'll have to consider whether I can continue selling. It's heartbreaking having to deal with angry customers day after day asking where their order is and if I've even posted it. I work so hard to post orders the same day they are received but then Royal Mail just don't deliver them.

Cas112 · 19/12/2023 20:27

This has been in the media already the weekend just gone

Dontcallmescarface · 19/12/2023 20:39

Maybe if certain companies and organisations (looking at you Councils and the NHS), actually got the letters to the printers on time and included actual names and addresses, we'd get them printed and away to the mail centres on time. E.G some from a certain Council were printed and sent off today that should have been done last Thursday, but the file only arrived yesterday so were unable to be printed, sorted into the correct mail centre and dispatched before today. So by the time RM get them (I don't work for RM), it will probably be Friday before they are delivered.

SequentialAnalyst · 19/12/2023 20:41

I have a friend who I've known for years. He is a retired postie. He has witnessed the job getting harder and harder over the years, even before the sell off. He now also has a crumbling disc in his back, probably from his job.

Way back in the v early 1970s I had a Christmas postie job. There were still reports back then of temp staff dumping letters - or reposting them if there was any room in a postbox! Back then, of course, practically everyone sent loads of Christmas cards, and the postboxes were absolutely rammed as Christmas approached.

BalletBob · 19/12/2023 20:48

Scarletttulips · 19/12/2023 17:53

What would you like them to do?

They don’t have the staff to deliver the post.

They can’t pull postmen out of their arses.

Honestly voices like this are a wet dream for big businesses. This is why they're never held accountable and nothing will change.

Royal Mail aren't some kitchen table outfit that hasn't been able to anticipate demand. They are a massive business. This is all by a mixture of design and incompetence.

It really isn't rocket science. They need to pay their staff fairly, hire enough people to tackle the workload and provide decent working conditions. Simple.

RM should never have been privatised. This is where corporate greed gets us

EmmaEmerald · 19/12/2023 20:49

Skimm · 19/12/2023 19:59

The postman said a programme was going to come out about it thats why I think its about to get exposed.

I'm so pessimistic, I just think an "exposé" will tell us what us what we already know and then nothing will happen.

I have never seen any services, public or private, in the dreadful state they are now, in all my days! <waves stick>

I do wonder if the council are using a different delivery service. I'm in a new build and there were lots of letters about banding, doing payments in advance. That stuff, we all got on dates when no other post came for weeks and no one saw a postie. So I reckon a different company delivered it.

LonelynSad · 19/12/2023 20:49

Remember this time last year? There was photos of cages & cages & cages full of mail all stood in rows outside RM depots. It was absolute chaos. And here we are again, 1 year later

BalletBob · 19/12/2023 20:50

kimchio · 19/12/2023 20:17

I think lots of them are just giving up the will to even try when the situation is so hopeless. Morale is extremely low.

My DH is also a postman. All of this is true for him also. Plus, Black Friday and Christmas seem to come as a huge surprise to RM every year - little to no forward planning. DH is exhausted and fed up, if we didn't need the money to pay the mortgage, he would quit tomorrow.

My DH has just taken his pension after 34 years. The staff are demoralised, tracked despite agreement that the pdm devices weren’t to be used for tracking the staff just the mail and management aren’t held accountable for their actions. A postal worker will be suspended and then dismissed for wilfully delaying the mail if they mistakenly leave one letter in their frame yet a manager will tell posties to leave a whole delivery to do parcels with no repercussions. DH was always so proud to work for RM but the last 5 years were horrendous and he had to leave because he was so miserable due to mismanagement.

LonelynSad · 19/12/2023 20:59

Absolutely no issue here. Didn't get any post today but just looked on my ring camera and there the postman is at 09:55, walking past our house whistling happily, as usual 🎶🚶‍♂️Must've just not been anything for us today.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 19/12/2023 21:00

This has been happening for months, it is not just the Christmas seasonal busy period. What is worse is it not just domestic post but business post too. My postman says that if someone is off sick or on holiday then the post for their round just doesn't get delivered. They are almost 50% down on staff and relying on agency staff to fill the gaps.
