Couldn't see a recent thread showcasing Christmas tat for sale and I just had to share this - described as a Christmas Shrimp.

I help the SIL at several festive craft fairs every year (she sells honey). It never ceases to amaze me the amount of homemade crap people continue to lovingly display on stalls, only to stand sadly by for the next three hours, waiting for someone (anyone) to buy their crocheted/knitted/painted/sewn/tortured tat. Most we never see again, but some will re-surface next year in an effort to claw back some of the money they spent on supplies. Pom poms were a big thing this year, strangely.

I also sell honey at Christmas craft fairs, and tortured tat is a brilliant way of describing some of the stuff. There are of course, some lovely things, but I'm always amazed as to the shite quality and sheer fucking pointless-ness of some offerings.

I once did a Victorian Christmas Market. Stalls were £100 a day. There was a girl on the next stall who was (only) selling those glass tealight holders you can get from IKEA, except she had coloured some of them with glass paint. They were £2 each and she sold ten. I was gutted for her, but couldn't for the life of me figure out how she'd thought she was ever going to make any profit.

ScottBakula · 19/12/2023 12:55

@Howyoualldoworkme , what on earth is that !
It looks like a very badly made dream catcher covered in shit melted chocolate

FractiousPangolin · 19/12/2023 13:43

@Howyoualldoworkme I don't understand!

Howyoualldoworkme · 19/12/2023 14:37

Apparently it's a placenta wreath (I had to ask my sister, she's not made it btw, she's an extremely skilful and successful crafter)
So we don't forget the true meaning of Christmas 😳

Da fuck?

I thought it was a minging giant pretzel.

InMySpareTime · 19/12/2023 15:24

I'm pretty sure the placenta is not "the reason for the season", I mean, nobody's starting a thread complaining that their DC didn't get the role of the placenta in the school nativity...

Howyoualldoworkme · 19/12/2023 15:26

It's only a matter of time 😁

ScottBakula · 19/12/2023 15:29

@NewBrightonEel my 5 year old would play happily with that for days. Ladder, little house, umbrella, sorted!

twoboystwodogs · 19/12/2023 17:56

porridgeisbae · 19/12/2023 18:14

I think that shrimp is pretty fun/cool actually.

SingSongVerilyTheSky · 19/12/2023 20:05

Perhaps we could all chip in a tenner and buy that 12DOC monstrosity… and get it sent to someone.

Rishi perhaps? Imagine how this seller, presumably devastated that nobody had bought his creation for years, would feel if it were finally purchased and ended up in 10 Downing Street?

SingSongVerilyTheSky · 19/12/2023 20:07

Also, if anyone could link me to the prawn-bringing SIL thread I’d be as happy as a shrimp at Christmas 😁

Exasperateddonut · 19/12/2023 20:39

I crocheted a load of shrimps for present toppers this year. Think I should have sold them now 😅 who knew there is great shrimpy love on mumsnet!

The frogs were big when my kids were small. My friend went into a supermarket where a pal saw her and asked what she was buying, “Some lentils to stuff a frog” . Pal said “My God I didn’t realise you were that hard up!”.

Saw this recently on a local Facebook group. I just don’t get why you’d want a Christmas shell? 😂 I mean the pictures painted on them are nice & festive but…..on a SHELL?!

I think this is decoupaged napkins rather than painted. Not sure if that makes it better or worse.

Jaggy glass pickle for your tree, darlings?

I want a stained glass Christmas pickle. I don't know why, I just want one.

I do NOT want a placenta wreath. Is it made of a real placenta? It's like Christmas at Ed Gein's house.
