Who are your favourite and least favourite TV detectives?

I love Father Brown though I have to admit that he can be rather annoying at times. I also love Shakespeare and Hathaway and Poirot and really enjoyed Luther.

I’ve just started watching Vera and I can’t quite decide which category she’s going to fall into. I like the show so far but is she always so shouty and irritable?

Basil The Great Mouse Detective was awesome.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/12/2023 12:18

Morse (and/or Jessica Fletcher 😁)

Don’t like Rebus

Contraryjane · 16/12/2023 12:20

Vera. I wish I could be that assertive.

Deborah Morgan from Dexter (seeing as I technically can't have the man himself )

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 16/12/2023 12:22

Going back a bit, I always liked Cagney and Lacey. Quite an intelligent show for that sort of cop stuff.

Of the TV private/hobby detectives, I liked Jeremy Brett as Holmes and can’t bear Jessica Fletcher.

Bongosbanjo · 16/12/2023 12:24

Jessica Fletcher as Angela Lansbury has some brillant facial expressions. Least would be Morse, very dull, though no doubt John Thaw was also a great actor

murasaki · 16/12/2023 12:34

Dalziel from Dalziel and Pascoe, Colombo, Miss Marple (Joan Hickson), Taggart, Jane Tennison

Dislike Rebus, Vera

Longlive · 16/12/2023 12:37

Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellicott from Strike brilliant.

akissbeforebed · 16/12/2023 12:37

Love:
Sherlock
Dalziel & Pascoe
Morse

Can't get on with:
Shetland (can't even remember their names)

Itisallgoingtobeok · 16/12/2023 12:37

Another one for Joan Hickson as Miss Marple here. I've never seen Father Brown, I shall add that to my Christmas's telly list Smile

mondaytosunday · 16/12/2023 14:13

Rebus (Ken Stott, not John Hannah)
Wallander (not Kenneth Branagh)
Morse
Kojack
Columbo
Rockford (played by James Garner)
Magnum

Coolstorysis · 16/12/2023 14:18

I was going to say cracker and the Robson green character from wite in the blood but neither are detectives. I liked Ken stott in messiah.

Didnt like David thingy in the mark billingham adaption, the whole show wasn't very good.

I don't seem to watch many detective things these days, anyone recommend any good ones?

Xatz63 · 16/12/2023 14:19

My favourites are
Miss Marple but Joan Hickson only
A Touch of Frost
Vera
Morse
Dislike Taggart

Pavane · 16/12/2023 14:22

I like Jimmy Perez from Shetland. Morse was a pompous, ill-tempered windbag.

shivbo2014 · 16/12/2023 14:24

Love Columbo

PastorCarrBonarra · 16/12/2023 14:30

I preferred Endeavour to Morse. Haven’t watched Lewis yet but I really like the relevant character in Morse so will probably enjoy it.

I think that Christine Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey are my ultimate favourites. Powerful, flawed, well-drawn characters. I also love Sarah Lund in The Killing. And the policewoman (not a detective though) in the first season of Fargo, the one who married and became pregnant at the end.

Contraryjane · 16/12/2023 14:32

I agree that Miss Marple has to be Joan Hickson. No other will do.

VioletCharlotte · 16/12/2023 14:35

Nicola Walker as DCI Cassie Stuart in Unforgotten (I have a huge girl crush on her!)

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/12/2023 14:36

Dempsey and Makepeace

Twiglets1 · 16/12/2023 14:38

My favourite is Saga from The Bridge.

AndThatWasNY · 16/12/2023 14:42

Happy Valley (terrible with names)
Sherlock
Cracker

orchardsquare · 16/12/2023 14:43

I like Poirot and Sherlock.
Really dislike Vera - both the character and the plotline.

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 16/12/2023 14:43

Morse
Cormoran Strike (and Robin Ellacott)
Luther
Piet Van der Valk (and Lucienne. In fact I think Lucienne is my favourite of all)

MotherOfCatBoy · 16/12/2023 14:43

Another Cagney & Lacey fan - formative feminist viewing!

Also fond memories of Magnum PI and Gene Hunt in Life on Mars

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 16/12/2023 14:44

Oh and Sherlock of course.
