I love Father Brown though I have to admit that he can be rather annoying at times. I also love Shakespeare and Hathaway and Poirot and really enjoyed Luther.

I’ve just started watching Vera and I can’t quite decide which category she’s going to fall into. I like the show so far but is she always so shouty and irritable?

Who are your favourite detectives?

Detective Vic Mackey from The Shield was somewhat morally dubious but annoyingly likable.

Always had a soft spot for John Nettles in Bergerac as well as Cagney and Lacey and let's not forget the lovely but badass Detective Lady Harriet "Harry" Makepeace.

Vera, Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher were just nosey medalsome cunts.

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 16/12/2023 14:49

I like David Tennant in Broadchurch and Cormoran Strike of the same name.

dating myself here, but I dislike the sidekick in Wexford, and Inspector Lynley.

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 16/12/2023 14:49

Oh, and John Hannah didn’t work as Rebus for me, but having seeen the trailer Rik Rankin looks intriguing

That made me laugh. But for the most nosey, meddlesome cunts of all I give you…the Scooby Doo gang.

DisforDarkChocolate · 16/12/2023 14:57

Rebus has not been well cast, they need John Hannah as he looks now and to start again.

Vera, WTF is her accent meant to be?

Morse, a favourite. Father Brown is good in a Sunday afternoon sort of way.

Skinskinskin · 16/12/2023 15:18

I love the Wallander books especially the last one the end made me cry and Krister Henriksson was amazing as Wallander he played him just as I imagined him, I sure I read somewhere that late Henning Mankell also thought the same thing. Kenneth Brannaghs portrayal of Wallander was at best second rate in comparison.

TheTecknician · 16/12/2023 15:31

Favourite: Colombo. Peter Falk was perfect.

Least favourite: Inspector Frost. I always thought David Jason was miscast in that role.

TheTecknician · 16/12/2023 15:33

Columbo. Beg pardon.

DejaVoodoo · 16/12/2023 15:50

Least favourites - Miss Marple, George Gently, Endeavour, Morse

illbeinthegarden · 16/12/2023 21:11

Gene Hunt - I just can't help myself
The two women detectives from No Offence I really enjoyed that one!

VerasDuckworth · 16/12/2023 21:16

Vera (obvs)
Kristen Simms

GellerYeller · 16/12/2023 21:18

Yes! No Offence was fabulous.
Gene Hunt, Catherine Cawood, everyone and everything about Line of Duty is top notch. Cagney and Lacey I loved as a youngster. Do David Addison and Maddie Hayes count(Moonlighting)? I’d love to see that again but it’s only streaming in the US.

Skinskinskin · 16/12/2023 21:25

I forgot Jean Hunt and Saga Naren loved them both.
David Suchet as Poirot was also fab again the same thing can’t be said of Kenneth Branagh as Poirot bloody awful.

TheTecknician · 16/12/2023 21:26

The whole point of Columbo wasn't a classic whodunit but rather observing our hero meticulously and artlessly destroying the perpetrator then pouncing after their final fatal mistake. That was what distinguished Columbo from its contemporaries.
