If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

I'll probably be a Nan/Nanny as that seems to be our family tradition.

Moveoverdarlin · 16/12/2023 10:18

I like Granny. But that’s probably because my Granny was super glamorous and I loved her.

I can’t stand Nan, Nanny or Nana.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 16/12/2023 10:43

DW was adamant that she was to be "Gran". "Granny" was her mother (i.e. baby's Gt-Gran) and DW wouldn't be called "Nana" at any price.

LoreleiG · 16/12/2023 12:03

What about Grams, like on Dawson’s Creek. That’s nice.

TheSuggestedAmendment · 15/12/2023 13:28

But doesn’t that make you sound like an extra from a Disney movie rather than an actual member of the family?

Don't know if it differs by area but I'm from the Midlands and loads are called nanny Christian name

ExpensiveDecorations · 16/12/2023 12:30

Granny for me, Grandma is OK but I would never want to be Nan, Nanny or Nanna.

Fallstar · 16/12/2023 12:31

I'm Granny as that's what's been used in our family for a couple of generations.

My GC isn't old enough to talk yet so may come up with something different, which will be fine!

johnworf · 16/12/2023 12:35

I wanted to be granny but the children had their own thoughts and call me nana. I don't really care tbh!

RudsyFarmer · 16/12/2023 12:36

I would give it zero thought and let my grandchild decide.

BigBoysDontCry · 16/12/2023 12:37

Always tends to be Granny in my family. My brother is simply called G by his grandchildren. I've also heard of a Grammy and grumpy.

user1471538283 · 16/12/2023 12:39

If I'm ever lucky enough I'd like to be Mama. I also like Mimi. But I bet you I'll be called the unflattering nickname my DS calls me!

BingoMarieHeeler · 16/12/2023 12:41

Something fabulous but I can’t think of it yet. I have a while as my children are children 😄

My kids have 2 Grandmas and 2 Grandads as that’s what our parents chose... So they have a differentiator added on by us.

Nanna and Grandma are my grandparents too so I can’t imagine that for myself.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/12/2023 12:42

I’m Granny, sometimes Grammy. Love it 😁

MintsSpy · 16/12/2023 12:51

DD has
Nan-nan & pops (my parents)

And nanny and grandad (DHs side)

I love pops for a grandfather I think it's so fun

wjpa · 16/12/2023 12:55

Gran

FromMilanToMinsk1 · 16/12/2023 13:05

SwordToFlamethrower · 15/12/2023 14:07

Nanny probably, like Nanny Og

I quite want to be Granny in honour of Granny Weatherwax Xmas Grin

In the French translations she's called Meme Ciredutemps (with accents, so it's pronounced like may-may). That's also quite nice.

My mum thought Granny and Grandma sounded too old so went for Nanny.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 16/12/2023 13:12

SwordToFlamethrower · 15/12/2023 14:07

Nanny probably, like Nanny Og

I prefer Granny Weatherwax myself 😉

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 16/12/2023 13:17

I know someone who is Gee Gee. Or you could go down the Scandinavian route and have Farmor or Mormor

Mirrormeback · 16/12/2023 13:21

I don't know why but I just don't want to be a Nana, Nan or Nanny it just makes me wince

I like Bubba though as PP

But will probably end up a gran, granny or grandma or some completely weird made up word

CherryJones1 · 16/12/2023 13:38

I would be Grandma. Not Granny or Gran, although I could probably bear Gran if they were older

Nan, Nana and Nanny seem so 'old' to my ears

whiteroseredrose · 16/12/2023 13:49

I hope to be a Grandma, Granny or Gran maybe followed by my name. I hate all the Nan, Nana and Nannys.

I initially had Grandma and Grandpa on mum's side and Granny on my dad's, but at some point in my teens started calling my Grandma by her first name, no idea why, and it stuck.

Same thing happened with my DC. My parents are Grandma and Grandpa but PIL were called by their names from early teens onwards, their choice.

Onelifeonly · 16/12/2023 13:51

Second time of reading this thread - think I'll go with my first name. As a child I hated having to call people 'auntie x' or 'uncle y' and dropped the auntie / uncle bit when I grew up. None of the next generation refer to their respective aunts/ uncles like that. I feel it is so formal, so the idea of being called nanny first name or granny first name etc is nauseating. But if it ever happens, maybe the kids can decide (or my kids rather, since they'll have to start before their children can speak).

I'm quite happy to have no grandchildren for a long time yet, even though my children are all grown up now....... here's hoping......

Katherineryan1986 · 16/12/2023 13:55

I became a grandmother for the first time in October and I call myself Nana. It seemed a ‘softer’ name somehow than Granny.
My husband is Scottish and is Papa. He had a Papa as a boy, and his Dad was Papa to our girls.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 16/12/2023 13:57

Mamma here, chosen by my DILz pronounced Mam-ar

I Iove it. 😊😊

SageMist · 16/12/2023 14:04

I am nannan, because that's what I used to call my grandmother. Also every other grandmother/great-grandmother/older woman in the family is called Nanny followed by her name and I really didn't want to be called Nanny Kate. It makes me sound ancient.
