If you were going to be a grandmother, what would you call yourself?

Just as the title says - if one of your children was having a baby, what would you want to be known as?

The only options I can come up with are:

Gran
Granny
Grandma
Nan
Nana
Nanny

Which would you choose, or would you choose something else?

I'm Nanny...grandma was taken, and the 'other' grandma wanted Granny, so I went with Nanny - which I now love, despite initially resenting being 'trumped' to granny 🤣

Honestly, just hearing your grandchildren call you whatever they've decided is enough to melt your heart. It really could be any word, and you'll love it regardless 💕

Mamgu
(pronounced Mam-gee. Welsh)

moomoo1967 · 16/12/2023 20:30

Grandma as that's what my Mum was known as

Wediblino7 · 16/12/2023 20:35

Haha ☺️ I’m Welsh too, south though so I’m going to be Mamgu.
Very long way away for me though!

Bernardmanning · 16/12/2023 20:39

I know someone who insisted upon being called Glamar as a mixture of glamour and grandma.

xogossipgirlxo · 16/12/2023 20:41

Nana is lovely. I’m Polish so I hope my grandchildren will also call me BABCIA😆

tinytemper66 · 16/12/2023 20:45

Mimi

tatyr · 16/12/2023 20:49

I've heard Mamgu shortened to Gu around here, which I quite like (pronounced Ghee)

Tourmalines · 16/12/2023 20:50

NANA , and I love it !

I am called Bubba, as were my mother and grandparents. It’s an old Yiddish term but much preferable in my mind. Families will often add the person’s first name as well to differentiate them. When I had children my friends also called my mother Bubba!

Edited

I like Bubba.. can see it with dd's kids but my son's likely to marry out so unfortunately I doubt it!

trying29 · 16/12/2023 20:53

When I had my kids my mum didn’t want to be any of the traditional names so made up Zuzu and it’s stuck. You could go really left field with any name tbh!

TinaTotal · 16/12/2023 21:01

I think it'll be a few years before I become a grandmother but I don't want to be Nana like my mum and grandmother. I'm leaning towards Mimi. Which is a diminutive of my actual name also. I hope it doesn't sound pretentious. I go to a children's activity with a grandma who is called Gigi. And I think she's cool!

Sunnysideup78 · 16/12/2023 21:10

My grandmother is Nana so my mum opted for Nanni!

I love what Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory calls his Grandma ...... Meemaw! It's so cute!

I’ve told my kids I’m gonna be mee maw, I’m not Texan or American but all the English words sound so old! 😂

MajesticWhine · 16/12/2023 21:11

I would be ok with Granny but I also think kids will choose what they call you.

Lovethistimeofyear · 16/12/2023 21:13

Gran or Granny for me.

Newstaronthehorizon · 16/12/2023 21:14

So is MN saying that working class is nan and nanny/ nana, and middle class is grandma?

I like GG which I actually think means Great Gran.

Dacadactyl · 16/12/2023 21:16

Nanny when they're young and then Nan when they get older.

Granny and grandma just sound so OLD to me, but I think it's just that my nan was "nan" to me and my mum is "nan" to my kids too, so I'm more used to the term.

MrsJoker · 16/12/2023 21:19

I will hopefully be Granny some day. I loved both my grannies (differentiated when necessary by their surname) and it’ll be lovely nod to the past and to the memory of two exceptional women

Johnnybegood2 · 16/12/2023 21:21

I'd like to be Nan or Nanna I think.

My kids have: Gran, Gran,Granny, Grandma and Grandma. It can be confusing 😕

Footprintsinthesand · 16/12/2023 21:33

My DM wanted to be Grandma, but DS said MarMar when he was tiny and it's stuck. I think she would still prefer Grandma but tough! 🤣

PurpleBugz · 16/12/2023 21:36

Grannie

Lovingitallnow · 16/12/2023 21:37

I like the idea of Maw-maw, I've only boys so in for a penny in for a pound with MIL from hell.

onestepfromgrace · 16/12/2023 21:37

xogossipgirlxo · 16/12/2023 20:41

Nana is lovely. I’m Polish so I hope my grandchildren will also call me BABCIA😆

I’m nana but two of my grandchildren have a babcia and djiadzu (spelling)

maddiemookins16mum · 16/12/2023 21:46

I’d be a Granny and DH would be Papa. It’s sort of family tradition, we hail from the west coast of Scotland and I don’t know any of the extended family who as Grandparents were called any other names but these ones.
