Should I report this?

At 7:40am we had someone ring our doorbell no less than 10 times and bang on the door. We assumed it was something serious so shot up, put clothes on and went downstairs.

In that timeframe, we heard them try our door handle, bang the door and ring the doorbell several times again.

It was a fucking delivery driver dropping off a parcel.

I checked the security cameras and he did indeed try to see if our door was open.

In what world is this acceptable? Why would you try to see if our door is unlocked? All lights were off and blinds closed because we were asleep!

I'm half tempted to report this. Would you?

Absolutely report it!

WildFlowerBees · 14/12/2023 10:06

I wouldn't, it's no excuse however there's a lot of pressure for delivery drivers to deliver on time and they get paid per delivery. They're swamped and get paid poorly. It's not ok to try your door of course not but I'd not try and get him fired and show a bit of humility especially at this time of year when so many people are feeling pressure.

TheCryptozoologist · 14/12/2023 10:08

I had this with Next. I paid for a 10-2 slot and at 7.15 am on a Saturday the man was there banging on the door waking us up. I complained to Next, don't know what happened but did say they would contact him and it would not happen again, I doubt he would be sacked. I got my P&P refunded.

CatamaranViper · 14/12/2023 10:10

If the driver did nothing wrong by trying to open OP's door, then he won't get in any trouble if/when OP reports this will he.

It's just not okay. Doesn't matter if he was "trying to do OP a favour", he doesn't get to decide if he can enter someone's property without their permission.

He should have rang the doorbell, knocked on the door, waited an appropriate amount of time before either leaving it in a safe place outside or with a neighbour.

sprigatito · 14/12/2023 10:11

I recommend watching Ken Loach's film "Sorry We Missed You"

It would take an awful lot for me to report a delivery worker, especially just before Christmas.

@PuffPastryFluff wibble wobble.

oh dear, OP, you are being far ruder than anyone was to you.

go and have a nap, you may feel better.

of course I did, I paid for a specific slot. What if I was out? The slots are there for a reason and I did not appreciate being woken up

He wouldn't have been trying to enter, FGS, only chuck the parcel inside the door!

housethatbuiltme · 14/12/2023 10:15

Safe place instructions often suggest 'leave inside door' so I assume its something people sometimes request... never had it happen to me though.

Seems odd he was so desperate as we are getting fly buys right now. Yesterday Evri dropped a package at our back door. They knocked once and by the time I walked from the living room to the kitchen to open the door (less than 1 minute) I head a van door slam and he was long gone zooming up the road and my package was in the recycling bin.

I would assume they would ditch it or put 'no one home' and disappear with it.

Brefugee · 14/12/2023 10:15

I'm trying to imagine the scenario where after one tiny knock the driver got OPs neighbours out of bed to deliver a parcel for the weirdos next door.

That would make a great AIBU (FWIW some pp might like to know this is chat, not AIBU)

TheYeaSayer · 14/12/2023 10:12

Yes but the people inside the house won't know if it's their friendly neighbourhood delivery man trying to open their front door or an intruder trying to break in.

Snowdogsmitten · 14/12/2023 10:18

bumtrumpet · 14/12/2023 08:32

That's not at all the same. This driver was trying to get the parcels to the OP safely

So was mine. Apparently.

CatamaranViper · 14/12/2023 10:20

In what world is a stranger opening the door to your house acceptable?

lesdeluges · 14/12/2023 10:22

CatamaranViper · 14/12/2023 10:17

Yes but the people inside the house won't know if it's their friendly neighbourhood delivery man trying to open their front door or an intruder trying to break in.

Surely if you feel that vulnerable, the door would be LOCKED! A ring doorbell solves all issues to do with intruders though, you will see the delivery van and relax and answer the door, or see the balaclava'd person with a sack on his back and a hammer and phone the police immediately!

Honestly the paranoia on this thread about a man doing a job is unreal. Either your door is unlocked in which case he can drop the parcel in the hall, or you lock it and stay asleep.

TheCryptozoologist · 14/12/2023 10:22

Try it in America, most likely be shot😀

Your previous message mentioned "entering" the property. He wouldn't have entered.

Brefugee · 14/12/2023 10:23

Clearly, @CatamaranViper it is acceptable to the very posters in this thread who say "i don't mind and i leave my door open".

Whereas OP who is so very against it had her door locked and so that very thing didn't actually happen.

Brefugee · 14/12/2023 10:24

TheCryptozoologist · 14/12/2023 10:22

and every day we should give thanks that we don't live in a country where it was entirely foreseeable that a man would shoot and kill his teenage daughter who was sneaking back home after a party.🙄

lesdeluges · 14/12/2023 10:28

I firmly advise all those with the delivery collywobbles to buy a house with a porch. Ahem, I have one and the outer porch door stays unlocked during the day/delivery times, while the hall door remains locked. Perfect, never missed a delivery yet, and my ring doorbell tells me that my kind delivery person has done his/her job. Result, parcel delivered and I have not been shot, murdered, attacked, robbed and so on.

Happy Christmas everyone. There is a whiff of stress and nastiness coming off this thread I'm afraid. Chill out folks.

If you specifically paid for a service for 10-2 and they move it to 7.15am without warning you have a right to be pissed.

Imagine OP paid for a taxi to the airport for 10am and they showed up a 7.15am and said we moved your appointment. Maybe a massage was booked for 2pm to fit in her busy day but she gets there and they said sorry its now at 5pm.

Of course you would be mad you paid for a SPECIFIC slot.

Intruders don’t tend to ring the doorbell first

Growlybear83 · 14/12/2023 10:37

I think it's thoroughly nasty to even consider reporting the driver when he was clearly trying to be helpful. In most areas, drivers are forever being told not to leave parcels on doorsteps because they do often get stolen, and you're complaining because the driver was trying to leave your parcel safely'. As others have suggested, if you're not happy with the possibility of a parcel being delivered at an inconvenient time, perhaps you should have your parcels delivered to a locker or local shop.

Megifer · 14/12/2023 10:37

I'm guessing the ones who don't have an issue with this are lucky enough to live in areas where people don't have to consider that someone trying their door handle might be dodgy. Or don't have family who would literally freeze for about 5 hours followed by a mini breakdown.

No one should be trying other people's doors unless they are friends/family etc and it's normal for them to do that.
