Should I report this?

At 7:40am we had someone ring our doorbell no less than 10 times and bang on the door. We assumed it was something serious so shot up, put clothes on and went downstairs.

In that timeframe, we heard them try our door handle, bang the door and ring the doorbell several times again.

It was a fucking delivery driver dropping off a parcel.

I checked the security cameras and he did indeed try to see if our door was open.

In what world is this acceptable? Why would you try to see if our door is unlocked? All lights were off and blinds closed because we were asleep!

I'm half tempted to report this. Would you?

trying the handle is going too far and that would've freaked me out.
But, This Ken Loach movie changed my view of delivery drivers forever:

@BitOutOfPractice who said it was a present? Now you're the one with an imagination.

Well I'm glad that some of you are comfortable for a stranger to enter your home to deliver a parcel whereas I am not.

It's fine if you're not comfortable with this. But your door was locked so they didn't actually enter your home. Confused

WhatInTheAcasIsGoingOn · 14/12/2023 09:00

With the reactions here I assume he was also shoulder slamming the door to try and force entry?

Trying a door handle that is locked does nothing. It causes no harm. There are no lasting effects other than gained knowledge. The only thing it does is confirms that the homeowner is not one of the many customers who are okay with unlocked doors and probably no issue with parcels being left just inside the doorway. Your door was locked. Nothing happened. Move on.

@Ladyj84 we always leave delivery notes. If we're not home or don't answer, leave at back gate or by front door. Probably pissed off I am tired! Brew

What did your delivery note say this time?

BitOutOfPractice · 14/12/2023 09:01

Sorry I meant parcel. I’m only on my first cup of tea and also awoken abruptly by a delivery as it happens.

you’re determined to be outraged aren’t you @secretsanta23 . So go ahead, report the poor bloke for something that didn’t even happen 😳

Being a delivery driver on low wage isn't a valid excuse for me. It makes me feel uncomfortable.

But he didn’t enter!!

CICTGIGF · 14/12/2023 09:03

He didn’t open your door because it was locked though? He might have just been using your handle as another way of making a noise for you to answer. They are under a lot of pressure to deliver. Personally I would just be glad my delivery had arrived and he had waited long enough for me to get downstairs. I would be more angry if it was left on my doorstep and someone stole it. You might live on a quiet cul-de-sac but that doesn’t make you immune to opportunistic thieves following delivery vans this time of year.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:04

@Whataretheodds leave at the back gate or the front door. Or to a neighbour as a last resort

Not try my door handle in the hope that it's open.

@LakeTiticaca the delivery company. At what point does it say he can try to enter the home to deliver a parcel?

I doubt he would have 'entered the property'. He'd probably have left your parcel inside the door and shut it again and gone on to his next delivery.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:11

Ooh, some of you are a bundle of fun.

I wasn't asking for your thoughts on how much sympathy should be given to delivery drivers. Nor was I asking for you to be sarcastic in your replies and make me feel shit for feeling uncomfortable Confused

Anyways, I'm off report this to Daily Mail with the best compo face in the hope I get a front page feature. Grin

Yeah Im comfortable with it, if Im not I lock the door, which you did.

You knew it was the delivery guy, not just some random at 2am in the morning - two completely different scenarios - a random at 2am would scare the crap out of me . But the delivery guy was hammering and banging alerting you to the fact he was there , you knew who it was

Seriously what damage was done? No one got hurt, no one robbed, no imaginary dog escaped, just tell drivers face to face when you answer to them how you like your parcels delivered

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:13

@suki1964 no I didn't know who it was initially until I checked the camera. The doorbell only needs to be pressed once and the door doesn't need to be banged. Have a good day!

OP posts:
Whinge · 14/12/2023 09:14

The doorbell only needs to be pressed once and the door doesn't need to be banged.

If you went by those rules you would have people complaining they didn't hear the delivery driver.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:15

@Whinge once is enough for us to hear it. Thanks for your input this morning.

Trying someone's door no matter if it's to deliver a parcel is wrong! He could have bloody left it elsewhere around the house like most do in a safe place not try and open someone else's door. I think on this occasion with it being close to christmas I'd leave it though.

PuffPastryFluff · 14/12/2023 09:17

There is so much that is wrong in the world. A delivery driver trying to do his job is not one of them.

If this is your biggest problem then you are a very lucky person.

OwOwHolyCow · 14/12/2023 09:17

We had a postie that used to open our door and drop stuff just inside, even if it was just a bundle of letters. It did feel a little odd tbh, and I’m forever telling DH to lock the door after him, but I would never have dreamt of reporting him.

Your door was locked so I’m not sure what the issue is tbh.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:18

@PuffPastryFluff trying someone's door doesn't fall under a delivery driver trying to do his job.

Yes I am very lucky.

Well I'd disagree. As many PP have said some do leave their doors unlocked and drivers do leave parcels this way in some cases.

Yours wasn't. He didn't get in. There is no problem. It is a non issue. Please wobble your head.

@PuffPastryFluff wibble wobble.

I'd feed back to the company. They shouldn't be trying to open doors etc. More for their own safety - try to open someone's door round here like that and he might be eating his teeth 🤣 lots of robberies etc sadly.

Also just so he couldn't be blamed if something did go missing from someone's home.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:15

@Whinge once is enough for us to hear it. Thanks for your input this morning.

The delivery driver has a different experience, what with them knocking on hundreds of doors.

delivery drivers can't win. If they leave it at the gate or the front step they get lambasted for leaving it visible, if they ring/knock just once and then leave there are cries of "they didn't knock!" from people who simply didn't hear. If they run out of time to do their round because they are waiting for people to amble out of bed or to see if one single knock is enough people complain.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:26

@SoupDragon if the parcel comes with delivery instructions, then use them. They're there for a reason.

OP posts:
Happhappyhappy · 14/12/2023 09:27

I’m baffled by these responses.

OP, I’m with you! The multiple rings would piss me off but I would write it off as trying to ensure someone answers the door.

The trying to open the door…no bloody way! My dog would go mad..or escape!
