Should I report this?

At 7:40am we had someone ring our doorbell no less than 10 times and bang on the door. We assumed it was something serious so shot up, put clothes on and went downstairs.

In that timeframe, we heard them try our door handle, bang the door and ring the doorbell several times again.

It was a fucking delivery driver dropping off a parcel.

I checked the security cameras and he did indeed try to see if our door was open.

In what world is this acceptable? Why would you try to see if our door is unlocked? All lights were off and blinds closed because we were asleep!

I'm half tempted to report this. Would you?

@Happhappyhappy I like you. Thanks for understanding my point and not being a ...... Smile

He was hardly trying to enter the property surreptitiously if he rang the bell 10 times. He would be in a hurry to deliver, they have to deliver a lot of parcels in a day to make a living. Did he just try the door handle or was he attempting to pick the lock? Just seeing if he could leave it safely in the hall isn't really a capital offence, maybe the door moved when he knocked so he thought it might be on the latch?

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/12/2023 09:29

You asked if you should report the delivery driver OP. Most people said that you shouldn’t. Most people said that your door was locked, so your house wasn’t broken into and no harm was done. You were expecting a parcel anyway, so the odds are that that’s what it would be at that time.

You’re obviously going to report him. I’m not sure what it will accomplish for you, other than satisfy your righteous indignation, but you might lose him his livelihood.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:30

@Silverbirchtwo whilst I appreciate your comments, I don't think it's appropriate to open someone's front door.

The door doesn't wobble so that's not the reason.

He definitely wasn't in a rush either.

I'm surprised by how many people are happy for a stranger to open their front door! I'm with you OP, I'd be really annoyed.

I had an NHS nurse walk into my house one morning, meant for my next door neighbour. Frightened the life out of me!

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:32

If I knew where you all lived, I'd like to ensure the delivery drivers try your front doors whilst you're in bed. Just to see your reactions.

If it upset you yes report it but raise the concern with the company that you ordered the item from - it is they who have the contract with the courier company. The courier company employee is effectively acting as their agent.

Alternatively use the silent treatment and never order from that company again but I'm sure they would welcome feedback on the customer experience.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 09:33

@thebigwave I'm second guessing my life at this point. Have I been in a dream my whole life? When has it ever become acceptable for a stranger to try your front door?!

Christmas or not. Delivery driver or not. You don't do it!

If you don't want someone to open your door then it makes sense to keep it locked.

FrontEnd · 14/12/2023 09:35

@secretsanta23 physical attempt to gain unauthorized entry to a private property is illegal with minor exemptions for emergency situations and those most definitely don't apply to delivery drivers. It is unacceptable.

I have also had a delivery driver try to enter my property. On complaining, I was bounced through multiple customer services reps who did not GAF until I informed them I'd be sending the extremely clear CCTV recording to the police, unless they took it seriously.

CatMadam · 14/12/2023 09:35

I had a food delivery man bang so hard on the front porch window that I could literally feel it upstairs. Unfortunately I’ve had a man break into my house after doing this before so I absolutely freaked out. I wouldn’t want the man in your situation to lose his job, but I’d want him to be told to calm the fuck down the next time he’s at someone’s door!

PeppermintParty · 14/12/2023 09:37

If I was in bed upstairs and someone was knocking on my door, rather than get dressed, I'd simply open a bedroom window at the front of the house and shout down to see who it was, then ask them to leave the parcel on the doorstep. I wouldn't bother getting dressed to go downstairs first. But no; I wouldn't bother reporting them for trying the door handle.

mollypuss1 · 14/12/2023 09:40

What is the point of this post? The OP is clearly unwilling to accept that many people don’t agree with her and just wanted an echo chamber. Report the poor man who has to work long hours in all weather for peanuts if that makes you feel good about yourself.

Movinghouseatlast · 14/12/2023 09:41

You want to get some poor sod sacked for trying to be helpful? At Christmas?

Do you realise how much they earn, the deadlines they're under?

My Evri driver often opens our back door and puts parcels in the kitchen

lesdeluges · 14/12/2023 09:41

Get a video doorbell. You could have spoken to the busy busy man (Christmas stress deliveries!) and said to leave it on the step.

Otherwise, it appears to me that you are overthinking this, and appear determined to get the man sacked for doing his job.

I'd be happy enough that I got the parcel TBH, but I am laid back about these things, because I have a Ring Doorbell!

caringcarer · 14/12/2023 09:44

Who would you report it to? A person knocked on your door and woke you up, then tried the door handle to put your parcel inside, but your door was locked. No crime committed. 🤷

You'd waste police time to report someone trying to deliver a parcel?

How utterly ridiculous and unreasonable.

FacingTheWall · 14/12/2023 09:49

Your neighbours probably would have been as delighted as you were, to be woken up at 740 and asked to take a parcel for someone else!

Complete non-event, your door was locked and secure, and you were in no danger from an intruder attempting to leave your parcel.

Megifer · 14/12/2023 09:50

Honestly op you're not wrong, delivery drivers shouldnt be trying to open peoples doors. If that happened to my poor mum she'd have been a wreck for about 2 days afterwards thinking someone was trying to break in. If it happened to my crazy neighbour like I say the dude would probably still be spark out on the path 🤣😩

like I said I wouldn't REPORT it, I'd just let the company know that this driver could potentially open himself up to all sorts of trouble if one day he did just open someone's front door.

Raffington55 · 14/12/2023 09:54

This thread 🤣🤣🤣. OP should probably set her CCTV and go back to bed for another round of AIBU to try and catch harmless folk out in a day or two.

Passingthethyme · 14/12/2023 09:55

At least they tried. Here I don't even rhino they bother knocking, leave a card then I have to get it from the post office or call a number and go through the rigmorole of getting it redelivered.

MassageForLife · 14/12/2023 09:56

Of course I wouldn't report - he was just trying to deliver your parcel! It's coming up to Christmas, they are ridiculously busy, and he's trying to get his job done as efficiently as possible.

Brefugee · 14/12/2023 09:58

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 08:19

@Frasers someone trying to open your door isn't serious? Interesting.

and yet it was locked so no harm done? he was trying to do you a favour.

But go ahead and try to get someone on a really tight schedule, at the busiest time of year who gets paid a pittance in trouble.

With any luck that delivery company will always return your future parcels to their depot to make sure you have no further "complaints"

WhatInTheAcasIsGoingOn · 14/12/2023 10:02

He definitely wasn't in a rush either.

A courier delivering parcels mid December?

In the words of my kin, "ye talking shite, hen"

Brefugee · 14/12/2023 10:03

givemethetea · 14/12/2023 08:55

I'm surprised so many people think it's okay for the delivery driver to try the front door when a lot of posters on MN won't even answer the door if they're not expecting someone!

I'm with you OP, trying the handle is too far

the door was locked. OP knew, presumably, it was locked since it seems to be A Thing in the UK to lock yourselves in and not worry what happens if a fire breaks out. (that is by the by - i get it - doors where i live tend not to be openable if they are closed - Yale-type locks and no handle. I am aware UK doors are different.

The AIBUs coming up now that posters were in and the delivery driver whispered their name from 3 streets away and didn't try to deliver and now little Tarquin may not get all his presents are incoming now, by the bucketload. A driver trying to avoid that gets slated?

Just stick a note on the door saying: "don't try to open it, it's locked" or "don't open the door, Rottweiler hates strangers" should suffice
