Should I report this?

At 7:40am we had someone ring our doorbell no less than 10 times and bang on the door. We assumed it was something serious so shot up, put clothes on and went downstairs.

In that timeframe, we heard them try our door handle, bang the door and ring the doorbell several times again.

It was a fucking delivery driver dropping off a parcel.

I checked the security cameras and he did indeed try to see if our door was open.

In what world is this acceptable? Why would you try to see if our door is unlocked? All lights were off and blinds closed because we were asleep!

I'm half tempted to report this. Would you?

I’d be pissed off too, OP. I had an Evri driver chuck all my parcels over a 7 foot gate, including an ice maker, and they were broken. I complained.

That's not at all the same. This driver was trying to get the parcels to the OP safely

Ladyj84 · 14/12/2023 08:32

Ahhh go get a cuppa and hop back into bed if you can tho I know once I'm woken I can never get back to sleep so will just lie and read 😊

fedupwithbeinghot · 14/12/2023 08:32

They work very long hours to try and get parcels to everyone. If 7:40 is too early for you, maybe a delivery to the local shop, locker etc is better

Whinge · 14/12/2023 08:32

We don't need to wait in for parcels here. We and other neighbours have parcels left safely outside all the time.

I'm sure plenty of people have said the same. It's all fine, until it isn't. At this time of year lots of people have items stolen that have been left outside. I would be pleased the delivery driver was trying to keep your parcel safe.

JesusAndMaryPain · 14/12/2023 08:33

No. I wouldn't.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 08:33

@bumtrumpet I appreciate your comment. What if I had a dog that was fearful of intruders? There's just so many reasons a stranger shouldn't try to open your door for whatever circumstance unless it's an emergency.

I’d be pretty pissed off if a delivery driver tried my door!

I do get pissed off with the ones that ring the doorbell (which you can hear ringing) and bang on the door like the house is on fire but accept they are equally pissed off with people saying they didn’t hear the delivery person.

PickledPurplePickle · 14/12/2023 08:36

You couldn’t pay me enough to be a delivery driver

whatever they do is wrong

EvilElsa · 14/12/2023 08:37

Brings back memories of the time I was blow drying my hair in my bra and work trousers one morning in the living room when the door opened and the postman walked in. I hadn't answered (couldn't hear over the dryer) so he decided to just try the door (DH had gone to work and left it unlocked). Never left it unlocked again!!! I didn't bother making a complaint as he was apologetic but it gave me a fright.

MitchellMummy · 14/12/2023 08:39

0740 isn't that early. They have a lot to get through. They get paid little. Sometimes they won't leave in porch unless sender has specified that. I get cross if delivery drivers ring the bell more than once when I've got up immediately to answer the door. But I wouldn't report the driver.

Yup, dump it outside and it’s nicked they are to blame, try to open door and throw it in, they are to blame, and then you get vindictive people wanting to get them fired, and just before Xmas too

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 08:40

Whilst I appreciate all your comments... I still stand by that I do not want a stranger trying to open my front door. My home is my safe place and there are delivery instructions for a reason.

Being a delivery driver on low wage isn't an excuse. A stranger is a stranger and it gave me a fright hearing someone try to open my door.

So then why ask? Or why not just write please only respond if you agree. Report away, crack on. Hope you feel good about yourself when he’s fired.

@Frasers it's a discussion forum. We are discussing. I have my thoughts and you have yours.

Like I said it was obvious you were going to report, so i'm really not sure why you bothered to ask.

Girlwithapple · 14/12/2023 08:47

While I wouldn't like to think someone had tried my door (it is always locked) I do understand why the delivery driver has done it. As others have said, they are under enormous pressure at this time of year and poorly paid as well. While I see a lot of parcels - clearly visible- left in front of doors all around here (I work as a dog walker) some companies insist on their drivers taking a picture of the parcel in an open doorway, which may be tried it as he wasn't allowed to leave it anywhere else.

suki1964 · 14/12/2023 08:48

I hate drivers that ring the bell and bang the door at the same time, annoys the hell out of me cos A it sets the dog off and B - panics mum who then rushes to the door and Im scared she will fall over the darn dog who's going ballistic.

This now only happens when we get a new delivery driver. All the delivery fellas and single lady, are asked to not to knock or ring, just to open the door and leave in the lobby, same as the postman. Front door is never locked if someone is in and mum is nearly always home. If door is locked they know to go round the side and leave in the garage

Id never report a driver, its a crap job, pays very little and they are on the road for 12 - 14 hrs a day.

The only delivery driver I still have a "problem" with is the Saturday Amazon guy, he just leaves the parcel on the doorstep, no matter the weather and shoots off so I cant ask him to leave in the lobby

Had a relief postman one day delivering a parcel, he thought it was a great idea to leave it in the back of one of the cars, but didnt think of leaving a note as to what he had done, took three days to find it :)

Go get a cuppa and chill, its Christmas :)

Daveismyhero · 14/12/2023 08:48

I would report as we have a similar set up, front door straight into house with no porch. Someone else on our estate had this last year and the driver let their dog escape, then made no attempt to let anyone know and the poor thing got knocked over. I'd be absolutely beside myself if my dog got out so we do keep our door locked at all times but he definitely shouldn't be trying your door if that's not what you left on the instructions

WhatInTheAcasIsGoingOn · 14/12/2023 08:50

I yell "Thanks!" To any courier who pops a parcel on the inside of my front door if I can't get there on time. It means it's secure in my home and not left outside for potential porch pirates to nab. If my door is locked then it means I am not wanting it opened and a try of the handle does nothing and causes no harm. If it's left unlocked then it's openable. And if someone opens it to make sure I get what I ordered then fine, whatever.

LittleMonks11 · 14/12/2023 08:51

No, I'm with you OP. I would not be cool with a delivery driver trying my front door.

PuffPastryFluff · 14/12/2023 08:55

Have you watched Sorry we missed you? Should be mandatory for anyone who doesn't understand the massive stresses that these drivers are under. Doesn't ok the behaviour but how will making their lives harder by complaining help?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SorryWeeMissedYou

givemethetea · 14/12/2023 08:55

I'm surprised so many people think it's okay for the delivery driver to try the front door when a lot of posters on MN won't even answer the door if they're not expecting someone!

I'm with you OP, trying the handle is too far

Retrievemysanity · 14/12/2023 08:56

I don’t think I would. It’s not like it’s a random person turning up and trying to get in for no reason; he was trying to deliver the parcel. Some people are happy for drivers to open the door, some aren’t. You aren’t and your door was locked so he couldn’t and didn’t, so there’s no issue really. Did you open the door and get your parcel? If so, I think that’s the time to raise it, directly with the person.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/12/2023 08:56

You’re going to report him for upsetting an imaginary dog, and for Something that didn’t happen in the course of trying to do his job?

if you don’t want delivery drivers to leave presents inside, lock the door. Oh, you did! So nothing actually happened.

in short, no I wouldn’t and neither should you.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 08:57

Well I'm glad that some of you are comfortable for a stranger to enter your home to deliver a parcel whereas I am not.

Being a delivery driver on low wage isn't a valid excuse for me. It makes me feel uncomfortable.
