Should I report this?

At 7:40am we had someone ring our doorbell no less than 10 times and bang on the door. We assumed it was something serious so shot up, put clothes on and went downstairs.

In that timeframe, we heard them try our door handle, bang the door and ring the doorbell several times again.

It was a fucking delivery driver dropping off a parcel.

I checked the security cameras and he did indeed try to see if our door was open.

In what world is this acceptable? Why would you try to see if our door is unlocked? All lights were off and blinds closed because we were asleep!

I'm half tempted to report this. Would you?

@Flickersy thank you. Some sense!

CurlewKate · 14/12/2023 14:34

I'd be a bit pissed off by the noise-but I don't understand why trying the door is such a bad thing.

MassageForLife · 14/12/2023 14:34

I can just imagine the training he'll get.

'See when you deliver to that specific house? Have a card ready to pop through the door telling them to rearrange delivery.'

CurlewKate · 14/12/2023 14:35

Mind you, the Guinness Book of Records might be interested in the rate of doorbell ringing.......

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 14:36

@CurlewKate I too was impressed the bell could ding dong so quickly.

Andthereyougo · 14/12/2023 14:39

Put a sign on your door, signed, saying leave parcels by door.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 14:39

@Andthereyougo signs on doors? God no. That would ruin my perfect street. Wink

Explain to me how someone that is intending no harm trying a door handle of a locked door, a safety issue?

After I was in a car accident, I would be shaken up by rubbish being blown across the road in front of me. Just because I was 'triggered' by it, didn't make it unsafe.

How does the person know the door handle tryer doesn't intend any harm?

If you can, imagine someone vulnerable, maybe they have MH issues, PTSD type thing. Someone rings the bell, they don't answer for whatever reason, then they hear the person rattling the door knob. To the vulnerable person, there would be no need for the idiot to try the door handle. There's the deemed safety concern to the individual.

There's just no need for delivery people to be trying to get in other people's homes unless they know the person is cool with it.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 14:42

@Megifer thank you a million times over.

You seem to be talking about perception rather than actual.

While someone might think there is a safety issue, there isn't really one.

Just like an empty milk bottle blowing across the road isn't a safety issue for me in my car, instinctively I panicked.

PinotPony · 14/12/2023 14:47

What a drama over nothing!

You're upset because you were worried about something that might have happened but didn't.

I get why you would be unnerved by someone trying your door to gain entry to your home but (1) he didn't gain entry and (2) you saw it was a delivery driver so there was nothing to be fearful about. Just get on with your day.

wjpa · 14/12/2023 14:53

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 13:31

@Brefugee why don't you stop?

Our door is a handle system, so you can open it via the handle if is unlocked. They're a new style of door seen frequently.

The old style traditional style where you needed a key and then you pushed it open aren't seen as much.

I never want someone to open my front door from the outside using a handle as you describe. So, I got rid of the door that allowed this. I also didn't like the lack of security the door had (it included glass panels).

I replaced it with one that can only be opened from the outside by using a key. That had no glass in it.

That aside, if you are genuinely afraid of this specific delivery guy because he tried your door, and you report him, and he gets spoken to about it, he will know it was you and he knows your address. So if you are genuinely scared of this person, whyever would you poke him - when as things stand, you are just nobody to him and not on his radar?

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 14:55

@wjpa I'd take him.

so have you called the post office and told them to ban him from touching your door handle?

that seems the sensible option since you are so keen to persuade us that (although you could take him) he frightened you half to death or something.

and i hope you know where the depot is, because he'll just pre-write cards now, if he has any sense.

Royal Mail and the Post Office are two separate private companies by the way. They have been since 2012. It wasn't even a Royal Mail postie anyway.

Op said it was Royal Mail - do you know different?

steppemum · 14/12/2023 15:06

I would just point out OP, that you have had 3 posts deleted because of your personal attacks on people, and that not one single other poster on this thread has had any posts deleted.

You didn't like him trying your handle. Fine that's up to you. No need to swear and kick off at other people who don't agree with you and who point out the inconsistancy in your position as you leave you door unlocked during the day. In a conversation, you don't get to just tell people who express an opposing opinion to fuck off. We all grew out of that when we left school.

I have read a LOT of threads on here and it is rare to come across an OP who is so rude and antagonistic to the people giving an opinion on a thread where they have asked for an opinion.

Lilithlogic · 14/12/2023 15:08

It's a shame that Royal Mail can't start banning deliveries to properties who won't get of their arses and answer the door.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 15:10

@Lilithlogic I was in bed asleep. Wild to assume that I can levitate to the door as soon as I hear the first knock/door bell.

Seems to me that anyone who dares to disagree with you becomes victim to your vitriol. You're not really bothered about the delivery driver, you just want him to pay. A man losing his job is nothing to you, especially this sort of man who you obviously deem beneath you.

secretsanta23 · 14/12/2023 15:12

@Lilithlogic when have I said I want him to lose his job? Please quote and show me.

I want him told it's not ok to try someone's door handle.
