Explain slippers to me

Genuinely don’t get slippers and thought Christmas might be a good time to ask.

So you’re in the house, taken off your shoes or boots and you have tights or socks. It’s inside so tights and socks are warm enough. When you want to go outside you slip on crocs, plimsolls whatever.

I don’t get slippers. Why do you need shoes indoors?

Some people aren't warm enough in their socks. They prefer slippers over getting very thick socks or multiple sock. ?

Carsarelife · 13/12/2023 23:18

Tights or socks can be slippy on wooden flooring so slippers with hard bottoms work

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/12/2023 23:19

Hmm don't want to wear trainers or boots inside, slip into slippers feet comfy.

They're not shoes. They're slippers 😂

Some people don't have warm feet
Some people have cold floors
Some people like the comfort of fluffy slippers
Some people don't have heating on
Some people have circulatory issues or Reynauds
Some people need grips underneath to prevent slipping

I can't imagine not having slippers to wear inside.

SabbatWheel · 13/12/2023 23:19

Warmth, comfort, so I don’t bash my toes on things.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/12/2023 23:20

I have wood floors and peripheral neuropathy, socks don't cut it, I have slipper booties with a fleece liner and wear wellie socks.

Pigeonqueen · 13/12/2023 23:20

Because they’re warm, warmer than socks and I don’t like walking on a hard floor without padding under my feet. (We have carpet in some rooms but not all).

Houseplanter · 13/12/2023 23:21

Same reasons I wear shoes outside, even if my feet would be warm enough.

Kerantli · 13/12/2023 23:22

We have thin carpets directly on top of concrete, so we've always worn slippers or (on DPs case) crocs.

My feet are always cold as well as the above, even in the height of summer, so slippers it is.

SarcasmAndCoffee · 13/12/2023 23:23

Sensory issues - I can’t bear (bare?!) the feeling of socks on carpets

Torganer · 13/12/2023 23:24

We have an old draughty house with hard floors. I love my slippers. I’ve been to friends with newer houses and carpets and I wouldn’t need them. I think it depends on the house.

Namenumber3 · 13/12/2023 23:24

Sone houses are cold but the floor reflects it so why take off your shoes? I mean if it’s that cold flooring it’s not like the dirt is going to be an issue.
Carpet isn’t cold.p

Sugarfish · 13/12/2023 23:25

I don’t like carpet and my floors are cold in autumn and winter

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/12/2023 23:26

I have dogs, so slippers are better than socks or bare feet.

DappledThings · 13/12/2023 23:26

Not for me they aren't. My feet get cold. Inside in winter I wear normal socks, thick wool socks over the top and slippers.

WilloTheWispy · 13/12/2023 23:28

I don’t like keeping tights or socks that I’ve had on all day, on when I get home.
So my slippers are part of my ‘lounge wear’!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 13/12/2023 23:28

Socks are slippy on hard floors. I don't have carpets. Also, I have a tendency to plantar fasciitis, which flares up if I walk around barefoot or in socks.

MuckyPlucky · 13/12/2023 23:28

Many of us can’t afford (or don’t want to for environmental reasons) to keep our homes at a toasty warm temperature such that all cold draughts at floor level are banished and we can have the luxury of padding about in just socks.

Many of us live in poorly-insulated Victorian houses.

Bare floorboards.

Cold cellars beneath our living spaces

Poor circulation in feet & hands due to having to sit still WFH all day with no heating on so blood goes to our core to keep warm.

I not only have to wear thick slippers, but I WFH in a wooly hat and fingerless woolly gloves.

Talipesmum · 13/12/2023 23:28

Slippers add an extra layer of warmth to your feet. In the same way some people wear a jumper indoors, or another layer on top, or trousers instead of shorts etc etc - just socks or tights aren’t as warm as slippers. Surely you can understand some people feel the cold more than others?
Plus I find it more comfortable eg cooking in the kitchen with slippers on rather than socks or bare feet. Softer to stand on. Slight layer of protection if I drop something. More supportive. Less slippy.

BarelyCoping123 · 13/12/2023 23:28

I prefer something more solid than socks (which would be slippery on my wood floors), but less solid than shoes - hence slippers. I wear ballet flats

Namenumber3 · 13/12/2023 23:30

But you can’t wash sheepskin,/ wool slippers. And people have been wearing the same sweaty pair of slippers for years. Slippers are GRIM! Just more socks surely if you’re feet are cold. There’s thick thermal ones, warm and you can wash when needed.

RampantIvy · 13/12/2023 23:30

No they aren't. Slippers are warm and much more comfortable than shoes. We have a mixture of hard floors and carpets. Thin socks on hard floors just aren't warm enough for most people.

I'm surprised you don't know that TBH.

What a silly OP.

PuttingDownRoots · 13/12/2023 23:31

Because they keep your feet warm. Keeping your extremities warm keeps you warmer.

I notice it when on the tiled kitchen floor compared to the carpeted rooms. As for the unheated conservatory....

FoodieToo · 13/12/2023 23:31

Totally agree . I’m 51 and I’ve never worn a pair of slippers and never will !
Flip flops that are for indoor use only .
The idea of slippers conjures up
images of Hilda Ogden/ Nora Batty !

Yes you can wash them, I do.
