I'm trying to encourage ds to get a part time job but he keeps saying how hard it is. What kind of jobs are your teenagers doing? He's currently doing a levels.

My dd was waitressing at our local Indian restaurant. I can't remember how old she was when she started but she had been doing it for at least a couple of years by the time she was 17.

Fivetoomany · 10/12/2023 17:59

My 16 works at Sainsbury's.he does this alongside his full time college course.

My ds did lifeguarding alongside his A levels until covid got in the way.

DD (16) tried to get a job for ages and most places didn't even bother to respond. She did get a job as a Christmas temp at Boots and she loves it. One if her friends works there on a permanent contract. Her other friends are about 50/50 on whether they have a job but the ones who do are working in a jewellery shop, a washer up and a lifeguard

Saturday job in a shop

jmh740 · 10/12/2023 18:01

Dd works in the local championship football club in a food kiosk

Conkersinautumn · 10/12/2023 18:01

The local service station also employs a high number of the local.sixth form.

15 year old dd does waitresses and washing up at local cafe.

17 year old ds works at mcdonalds.

Local hotel restaurant posted that they were willing to hire casual workers inc 16/17 yo students, so DD started there at 16. Then applied to primark when 17 as she wanted to do less anti social (breakfast shifts both weekend days) hours and work in a different role to hospitality.

Waitingfordoggo · 10/12/2023 18:05

My DD is 18 and has had part-time jobs since she was 15. These include: Saturday girl in an independent shop, waitressing at 4 different restaurants, barmaid in a pub (after she turned 18), server in a bubble tea shop and the current one: working in one of those pottery painting places.

Would just like to say that these were not all at the same time and I know that’s a lot of jobs! She hasn’t been sacked from any but has been unlucky with places closing down/going into liquidation/seasonal work only etc.

MigGirl · 10/12/2023 18:10

DD didn't want to do retail, although did apply for some waitressing jobs. She is 16 and has a job as a lifeguard, they have to be fairly good swimmers to do this and she needed to do a week long cause. It does pay slightly more though then most of her friends get. Her friend works at the local pub serving food.

SummerSazz · 10/12/2023 18:11

DD1 does babysitting, cleans an air bnb and works in the cafe at a local tourist gardens

Romeiswheretheheartis · 10/12/2023 18:11

Works at Waitrose and loves it!

vdbfamily · 10/12/2023 18:13

just started in village shop being paid a pitiful hourly rate but it is a start and once she is 18 she'll use experience to get a better paid job in Uni holidays

VeronicaSawyer89 · 10/12/2023 18:13

She's got a Christmas job at JD Sports.

SabrinaThwaite · 10/12/2023 18:14

One did lifeguarding and swimming assistant. The other has a sideline in web design.

BusySittingDown · 10/12/2023 18:14

My 16 year old works in a homeware shop. She was looking for what seemed like ages, tbf. A lot of places round here seem to want over 18.

vdbfamily · 10/12/2023 18:15

meant to add that oldest daughter worked in care homes from age of 16 and middle child( son ) got Deliveroo job which is very useful for Uni as you can work anywhere once you are cleared and have the app.

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/12/2023 18:15

My dd worked Saturdays in a hairdressers at that age.

Alfiemoon1 · 10/12/2023 18:18

Dd used to work at McDonald’s at that age
ds started as a pot wash in a pub he’s still there now but works as a chef

thestringcheesemassacre · 10/12/2023 18:20

Waitressing in local restaurant. Pay is pitiful but lots of shifts and good regular shifts. Got it the summer after after she finished exams

BlueRabbitWasNaughty · 10/12/2023 18:34

McDonalds is great for that age group and they always seem to be hiring round us. They pay well too.
Mine have done that as well as shop work, Halfords and B&Q respectively... both found through Indeed.

ConstantRain · 10/12/2023 18:39

My ds and dn looked and looked for part time jobs but didn't get anything til 18. 16 and 17 year old in my family are having the same issue.

GMH1974 · 10/12/2023 18:40

Mine works in Gail's Bakery. The pay is excellent because they don't pay less for younger people. She previously worked in a Smith & Western restaurant where the pay was appalling and the work physically exhausting.
