I'm trying to encourage ds to get a part time job but he keeps saying how hard it is. What kind of jobs are your teenagers doing? He's currently doing a levels.

16 year old dd works at McDonalds. They pay nearly double the minimum wage required for her age so she's happy.

Ds1 worked in retail
dd was a barista
ds2 is a car valet

Does your DS have a hobby or interest he could monetise? Not my DC but my nephew does the same job I did at his age. Before and after school he feeds and mucks out at a riding school, and works there on the weekends. His 16yo brother is quite high level at his sport so doesn’t have a lot of spare time for a job due to his training schedule, but his hobby is making patchwork quilts and he sells these on Etsy.

Waitressing. It's a zero hours contract at a large venue, so she can book the shifts that suit her.

Oakdog · 10/12/2023 20:16

DS16 works in a garden centre, and gets paid more per hour than the adult minimum wage, ie. more than me. To be fair, it is hard work in all weathers, but very lucky to have a boss that appreciates them.

Frenchyq25 · 10/12/2023 20:16

Mine is a KP in a local cafe bar

BerriesNutsConkers · 10/12/2023 20:19

Dd used to work on the counter at a local Chinese takeaway from 15 - 17 and then got a job as a support worker with a group for disabled children.
She is doing A levels and works 9 hours a week, occasionally more.

DumpedByText · 10/12/2023 20:20

16 year old DD waits on in a cafe, does one day a week due to college work etc. She loves it!

DS worked at Legoland on the entertainment team.

DD babysat absolutely loads-very busy and in demand. Word of mouth a great thing!

bearsbeets2 · 10/12/2023 20:25

I worked at a newsagents from age 15 onwards.

huuskymam · 10/12/2023 20:27

When my kids were that age one worked in KFC and the other in the local theatre as an usher.

ManchesterLu · 10/12/2023 20:29

McDonalds. Quite flexible with shifts, and pay surprisingly well!

UsingChangeofName · 10/12/2023 20:29

All mine worked as lifeguards.
Obviously you need to have the swimming skills / ability. Then you need to pay out to do the qualification, but once you've done that, it's a great qualification to have and can take you anywhere. Mine earned the cost of the training back in the first full week of working.

Prior to that, one worked for a local shop, cleaning after school for about 50mins a day x 4 days a week.
One worked in a big shop in the City Centre on Saturdays.

stomachameleon · 10/12/2023 20:32

Mine have all worked at Wetherspoons and started at 16.

clarrylove · 10/12/2023 20:33

He's been an office cleaner since the age of 14, just an hour or so on a Sunday. Started as a Barista at a national chain at 16. Also has done loads of sticking up for skittles teams from age 14. He also does a bit of English language conversation with Japanese school kids and a sports monitor type role when they come over on exchange. He's got loads of jobs as have all his friends!

Patchworksack · 10/12/2023 20:34

Lifeguard. He does a regular 5 hour shift once a week plus he’s ’bank staff’ and there seem to be plenty of shifts on offer. Also doing A levels. Most of his friends have a job.

jazzyfazzy766 · 10/12/2023 20:35

My 17 yr old works in a shop. Got the job 2 days after her 16th birthday. She works Sundays and one evening a week

Foxymoxy68 · 10/12/2023 20:45

When my son was 17, he worked in the local chip shop. He's 20 now and still does! It fits around his university studies.

CharityShopChic · 10/12/2023 20:47

When DD was 17 she worked 6 hours on a Sunday in a large Next store. Her brother worked collecting trolleys in Asda.

XelaM · 10/12/2023 20:48

My daughter is 13 but has been working weekends at a local livery yard mucking out and feeding horses.

theinnergame · 10/12/2023 20:51

Front of house at a 5* conference/wedding venue. Involves silver service, serving canapés, ironing tablecloths and polishing glasses, serving high teas, taking orders and serving breakfast, clearing glasses and tables. On there feet for hours, camaraderie, grumpy, drunk and lovely guests and chef. She loves it. Her siblings both worked here too.

jackstini · 10/12/2023 20:51
