I'm trying to encourage ds to get a part time job but he keeps saying how hard it is. What kind of jobs are your teenagers doing? He's currently doing a levels.

DS1 worked at JD Sports and still continues during the holidays now at uni.
DS2 worked at Papa Johns and also continues during the holidays now at uni.

Mine stacks shelves in a local Foodhall and also does the odd waitering job at the rugby club.

DD is 17 and waits tables in a pub. She's been doing it since she was 15.

My 17yo has had a hard time finding a part time job, we are in a large university city so the cheap young labour is plentiful and 18yos can be more flexible in working hours so I think this is why they are missing out.

I do think this generation are going to be working until gone 70 and I am fortunate in that they are of the art student/secondhand/zero waste flavour of teenager so they dont need much money so I haven't pushed them. They do have a small creative sideline though that brings them in a little money.

McDonald's for both dd and Ds when they were 17, dd left at 19 for her full time job and Ds is still there at 18 while at college and hates the work but loves the pay!

AhBiscuits · 10/12/2023 19:04

Works in a fish and chip shop.

megletthesecond · 10/12/2023 19:06

DS is doing Xmas retail.
He volunteered in the library in the summer to get work experience and a reference. He's really enjoyed both roles.

Coaching football (for the team he played for from 6-12).

DixiePeach · 10/12/2023 19:14

mine works Saturday at a garden centre.

ExpensiveDecorations · 10/12/2023 19:17

Works in a pub, mainly waiting on tables because of being under 18 but is also being trained on the bar. Usually two shifts a week alongside A levels at college.

Hotsausage2 · 10/12/2023 19:19

Works as a housekeeper on the weekends for the NHS. Early star but short shift and excellent money

EveWinter · 10/12/2023 19:20

Waitress in a hotel one day at the weekend. Took six months to get a job.

LBFseBrom · 10/12/2023 19:20

Long time ago but mine had a part-time job in a music shop and loved it.

ShanghaiDiva · 10/12/2023 19:21

Lifeguard.

spacechimp79 · 10/12/2023 19:23

My 17 year old DS has been working at a supermarket since he was 16. Does approx 9 hours a week.

Sweetpea84 · 10/12/2023 19:25

DD H&M and then Victoria’s Secret whilst at college

underneaththeash · 10/12/2023 19:27

In a warehouse, he’s really well paid. But he’s huge and basically loads and unloads scaffolding pills off a lorry a couple of days a week!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/12/2023 19:29

My dd has a wend job at WH Smith's , she is contracted to work 11-3 on a Sunday and picks up extra hours when she wants extra money.

The money is pretty rubbish though but will get better when she turns 18 in about 6 weeks.

Gumbo · 10/12/2023 19:31

At the local National Trust cafe, either in the kitchen or front of house depending on how busy it is. He loves it!

Ladyj84 · 10/12/2023 19:33

Weekends waitressing from 15 yes bad wage but so what gotta learn somewhere and start somewhere

autumnboys · 10/12/2023 19:38

McDonalds and the local leisure centre respectively. One of them earns some money in a band as well.

NormalForNuneaton · 10/12/2023 19:43

My DC are a bit older now but jobs they (or their friends have had) include:

lifeguarding
pot wash in a hotel
general assistant for catering in a private school

fgscat · 10/12/2023 19:43

16 year old son washes up at a pub

14 year old daughter works at a refill shop

Much easier to get these type of jobs than big name employers (also Tesco etc wouldn't take a 14 year old) but probably less well paid

SpiritedSneeze · 10/12/2023 19:53

She works at a juice and smoothie counter on weekends and the days when she has half days at college, she minds a pair of siblings for 2 or 3 hours after they finish school.

Depending on the area it can be really hard to find people who will hire teens- especially if there is a Uni nearby as casual and weekend roles are needed by students

Barleymilk · 10/12/2023 19:55

My 16 yr old has been pot washing/peeling spuds in a pub for a year. Some shifts are 6 hours and he is shattered but so many of his friends in year 11 are now looking for jobs,he realises he is lucky.
