I'm trying to encourage ds to get a part time job but he keeps saying how hard it is. What kind of jobs are your teenagers doing? He's currently doing a levels.

Waitrose, along with half her sixth form.

I recently went into a sixth form college to do mock interviews. I interviewed around 10 teens and EVERY one of them had a job, usually retail or hospitality, McDonald's, shops, local restaurants. They were all expecting good grades and usually had other extra curriculars on top too. I was very impressed! I personally will be ushering my teens into jobs that get me a discount I'm keen on, like M&S food hall Wink

My DS is 16 and at college. He got a job at the beginning of the summer. He works at our local fun fair which is indoor and outdoor so year round. He's a cleaner. The pay is only just above minimum but he gets a discount on food/drink and free tickets to the park and other places owned by the same group. They employ a lot of young people and seem to look after them quite well. He was doing 10 hour shifts over the summer but had 2 decent breaks. He was exhausted but in about 4 weeks saved up enough to buy everything to build his own computer. He only works one day a week now as I wanted him to have time to study and meet his friends too.

Both my boys (18 and 22) have worked part time at Sainsbury’s since they were 16. Now is the best time of year to get supermarket job as they are usually crying out for Xmas temps

17 year old is great with kids so does babysitting including school pickups. Has been doing so since age 15. Also works at local holiday kids club, rubbish money but it's more hours so worth it.

13 year old does a paper round.

Both mine worked at primark, my 17 year old still does

DD works in Superdrug, was waitressing for a while before this job.

My boys were both lifeguards at the local sports centre. I paid for the qualification for the eldest (younger one got it free as they were recruiting). Shifts were pretty flexible. They had one regular shift a week, plus there were always extra ones going if they wanted more. Both did it for 2 years in the sixth form.

DD is 17 in a few weeks and has been working at Subway for 4 months now. Before getting paid work, she volunteered at a local independent cinema. The volunteering really set her up well for her paid role. She's a bit sick of the smell of Subway by now though, and wants to look for work in a bakery or bookshop next summer. She has good hours at the moment though, so doesn't want to change anything yet.

Getting a job at 16/17 doesn't seem to be particularly easy for her friends, she's one of the only ones who has managed to get one. I think her voluntary work really set her apart from other applicants so I would highly recommend that to any young person.

Agree.
Mine were all Young Leaders with scouts.
From that (between them) they got quite a bit of babysitting (ad hoc)...... a job at an outdoor centre (leading groups) .... a job in an Outdoor shop ...... a job helping a party planner.

Both my sons were church organists at that age. They started aged 14 or 15. 2 hours work a week for £30 odd / hour. Plus extras (normal rates for extra services, £120 for weddings, £80 for funerals). They also both got various jobs accompanying local groups at similar rates. They both saved loads before going to uni.

Wowwellokthen · 10/12/2023 21:29

My 17yr old works as a lifeguard (4-6hrs per weekend more in holidays) and my 16yr old works at an outdoor leisure centre (10 hours per weekend). Both been doing these jobs for 5/6 months

DD 17 works for a local children's entertainer. Spends her time dressed up as a princess or a mascot, she loves it

crackfoxy · 10/12/2023 21:42

16 yo DD worked in clothes shop until she was 19 and got an internship. DS worked in local pub, now bakers.

Outofmydepthnow · 10/12/2023 22:35

All 7 had jobs at the Gastro pub across the road so no pick up or drop offs - from age 14. Started clearing tables. Then as got older .. they could work in the kitchen. and then the bar.
