One opinion that you have that will never waver, no matter what?..

No men in women's spaces. Equally I will not add my "pronouns" to anything.

Affairs are morally wrong, whether you are the spouse or the other woman/man.

Any belief system - no matter what it is - without room for debate or questioning is a dangerous thing.

EdithStourton · 03/12/2023 17:50

Hill?
I have an entire mountain range.
It's amazing I'm still alive...

No comma before ‘and’

You use a comma before "and" when it connects two independent clauses, as it does here.

A comma could go before "either" as well, come to that.

housethatbuiltme · 03/12/2023 17:50

I will not date a military man, just absoloutly not an option.

I have very little requirements when it comes to dating, I'm dont judge people on weight, class, looks, education, job, race, religion or anything (only personality as thats what you need comparability in) but over my dead body would I date anyone in the Army etc...

I have know two men (an old best friend and an ex) who went on to join the Army, both where fine before leaving and came back violent alpha male rapists (Andrew Tate style). My grandfather was Army too and I thought he was proof that 'some' decent military men exist but it came out a few years ago that even he was actually a domestic abuser and everyone was scared of him.

Even if I did meet the nicest guy in the world though who was not violent at all but was in the military I wouldn't put myself (or the kids I knew I would have) through having a father who they don't see for years at a time or being dragged up round bases or watching the news terrified that that bomb that just went off killed daddy etc...

Thepeopleversuswork · 03/12/2023 17:52

@VanityDiesHard

My point was, though, that the person who made the initial point was just judging on what she thought someone's motivation was, based perhaps on how they greeted her at a party or something. The phrase 'one strike you're out' seemed overly dramatic, as well. It is one (admirable) thing to resist poor treatment and not be a doormat. It is quite another to be practically on the lookout for people not falling over themselves to be friendly and 'treat you as an equal', and I think it is shortsighted to not see that.

I'm a pretty good judge of character.

There are people in life who treat everyone with courtesy from people they want to impress to people who are serving them or who are very junior to them. Then there are people who will be dismissive or rude of those they consider not to have any use to them or who they think are beneath them (and I'd put in this category people who are rude to serving staff etc). I'm not a paranoid or anxious person: I'm not someone who sees cliques everywhere or who stews over perceived snubs. But I know an arsehole when I see one and I don't give them second chances. You can call this being overly dramatic, I call it self-respect.

Pourmeanotherwine · 03/12/2023 17:52

I keep an open mind on many things, it is important to be able to hear other people's perspectives. People with different political affiliations can sometimes have similar values. I've never voted Tory, but I have met (centre ground) Tories who share my values but have different ideas about how to achieve them.
In terms of values, I believe in treating people with fairness, kindness and respect, I believe society should look after the most vulnerable, I believe in equal opportunities for all.
The only hill I will die on is that Pineapple NEVER goes on pizza.

FreyafromLondon · 03/12/2023 17:52

ALL dogs should be walked on a lead and muzzled when outside

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/12/2023 17:55

I do find it odd that so many people are claiming the ONE hill they would die on is the trans issue. Really?

That's just an inherent problem with the way the OP is phrased though. Virtually nobody will actually have a hill they would die in to the exclusion of all other issues. Part of the reason people will choose the trans issue is that it's a relatively new problem which has gained traction very fast, is still ploughing ahead, and affects literally everyone on the planet, in that it potentially changes the way all human beings are categorised and how society allows them to refer to themselves and others. That's without even going into the medical and safeguarding aspects of it.

I’m sure I saw an article a while back about how cats had basically attained evolutionary perfection. Can’t disagree with science!

Haven't read the full thread, but:

Branston baked beans taste much nicer than Heinz Baked Beans. I will not be persuaded otherwise.

Capitalism is wrong. Hoarding wealth and resources while others starve to death is disgusting. Hoarding natural resources while huge parts of the world who have nothing is shameful and selling it for profit beyond contempt. The British Empire caused much of these problems and Fuck off COP28 and UAE.

Do you have an alternative in mind?

RosesAndHellebores · 03/12/2023 18:00

I was going to say equality but replace it with manners and the Equality Act would barely be relevant.

the NHS is not fit for purpose and needs to be replaced. Manners have much to do with it.

Bookist · 03/12/2023 18:03

That men can never, ever be women. Doesn't matter how much lipstick or dangly earrings they wear (surprising how many actual women manage to never wear either) they will never be women.

Unicorntearsofgin · 03/12/2023 18:03

That no human can change sex.

sprigatito · 03/12/2023 18:04

Hitting children is always wrong, and people who disagree with that principle are always arseholes.

Tapasita · 03/12/2023 18:05

I think you can get a good measure of someone’s character actually by how they treat serving staff. And yes, agree that there are some individuals you meet who, because you’re clearly no worth to them whatsoever, treat you like a soiled cloth. Again it says LOADS

Mybatteryisoutofcharge · 03/12/2023 13:21

100%agree

The 1% paying more tax will never be enough to fund public services properly I’m afraid. If you want proper public funding this can only ever come from raising the taxes paid by the masses (or at least the middle X% of people). The reason to raise taxes for the 1% is to try to get the middle X% to accept paying higher taxes themselves.
This is what a former treasury minister told me. 🤷‍♀️
Plus, if you raise the taxes of the 1% too high they just find creative ways around it/ stash their assets in tax havens/ move to lower tax jurisdictions. So it doesn’t even end up raising that much more, even if superficially it may seem fairer.

Naptrappedmummy · 03/12/2023 18:07

That all adults should be expected to stand on their own two feet, take responsibility for their lives and actions and stop blaming other people.

There are so many excuses made for competent adults on here it’s quite embarrassing.

Ivelookedatlovefrombothsidesnow · 03/12/2023 18:07

That children need boundaries.

mantyzer · 03/12/2023 18:08

@Naptrappedmummy I will die on the opposite hill. Too many privileged people have zero understanding of the realities of many peoples lives.

Of course bigoted men would avoid womens rights board....

Are you suggesting that I am a man?

DustyLee123 · 03/12/2023 18:09

That John Lennon was actually an arse hole and I can’t believe people fawn over him.

RJ2023 · 03/12/2023 18:10

That organisations like the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) should be shut down and replaced with something that works. How on Earth can we live in a World where banks make incredible profits and still be allowed to shut all their branches to make even more money?

Blackvelvethairband · 03/12/2023 18:10

That understanding biology and understanding that men as a sex class pose a threat to women as a sex class is not a phobia or bigoted.
