What's the temperature in your house tonight?

My thermostat says 16 degrees and it's freezing, but still trying not to put the heating on! I have young DS but have made sure he is wrapped up nice and warm in bed.

It's currently 0 degrees outside where I am. I have a dressing gown on and a blanket and I can still feel the cold. Not sure when I'll put the heating on though.

What about you?

Mine is currently 19 degrees but I've had the heating on for a couple of hours this evening as it's bitter outside. Usually we manage with a little halogen heater to just heat the room, oodies and an electric throw. It's only the second time I've put it on. It's so shit having to live like this 😞

11.5 degrees. I can see my breath! I have perfectly good working central heating. I just can't afford to put it on. I'm only warm at the moment cos I'm in bed. Had the electric blanket on although I've just turned it off with a thick duvet, and a blanket down near my feet.

Anyone cold with bad insulation - apply for free insulation here - we had ours done a few years back with British Gas:

You'll notice a big difference. Keep warm all ✌️

Possibly cheaper elsewhere (I'm sure I paid a tenner!) but I have one of these you microwave
No good for cuddling up to as it's a hard plastic disc but it stays warm for ages
I put it near my feet. Got it for the cat but we share it Grin

Living in the UK I have found people's attitudes to heating crazy, like its a kind of pride to not use heating or like its some luxury. To me it's probably the most basic human comfort, having a warm house in winter

It's not pride. Believe me. There's nothing I would love more than to be able to put my heating on for a couple of hours just to take the chill off, but my gas bill is half my monthly earnings, without taking into consideration my rent, other bills and diesel costs getting too and from work. Public transport is also not an option because the bus doesn't run early enough for my start shift if I'm on the early shift and the last bus leaves about 20 mins before I close up if I'm on the Night Shift. So unfortunately for me having the heating on isn't an option.

@witchypaws thanks I'll have a look. My feet are always cold, but I can't wear socks in bed and find trying to keep them warm on a hot water bottle hard cos it never seems to stay in one place, plus I'm always worried it'll burst and my electric blanket doesn't go all the way to the end of the bed. So unless I'm going to lay with my knees bent up for half the night that doesn't work either. Last year I just used to shove my feet under DCat to keep them warm but sadly he's no longer here. Although then again last year I could actually afford to put my heating on cos I had a full time job then.

Daytime temp is set to 20, I occasionally stick it on 22, I really really feel the cold.

I am eight and a half stone wet through and my BP was 79/50 this morning. 🙄

The room where we watch TV is 25 degrees before we adjust it, we have £1,000 in savings and fully intend using it.

The house is 14 overnight, yesterday my DH managed to black out (food poisoning we think) and take a radiator off the wall which then proceeded to empty the entire contents of the heating system all over the floor in the hall.

I went with him to A&E and our fabulous neighbours sorted out the water, the plumber came back this morning to sort it out, (that right there is real community for you)

It has taken all day for the house to get back up to a reasonable level and we decided to keep it on 18 overnight, DH is asleep and I am parboiled (electric blanket) so I have reset it to 14.

We are lucky we could afford to heat it to whatever we desire, but I resent paying it.

I bought a good quality heated gilet last year, (friend bought cheap one, it didn’t last long) and I am really enjoying it again this year.

DS is my son, but I suspect not really………..as he has turned the heating off in his room, he is in the box room so two outside walls, and he cares not a brack.

21deg this morning, 9deg out and no wind.

Driving wind and rain lashing against the windows and side of the house
makes it feel chilly, seriously considering cork on the internal outside walls
which feel cold to the touch, I swear I can feel cold penetrating the walls,
and double glazed windows. Apparently I’m imagining this.

Insulation - we have deep loft insulation, fitted carpets, heavy curtains,
elec blanket, throws etc.
I have old towels I keep for this- at night I lay them lengthways folded along
the now void window ledges to absorb cold which they do most effectively.

In the bedroom I then bunch up the short curtains to lie on top of the towels,
folding them so they don’t look too unsightly.
On frosty mornings when I release the curtains they are freezing cold - so the fabric absorbs the cold which would otherwise be in the room, they soon warm up.

All these efforts to keep warm but worth it if they are effective.

The biggest most astonishing difference was made when we invested in a good quality track and hung very heavy warm terracotta coloured curtains we bought
in a charity shop (6£)! new! unused! too long so they puddle and absorb the cold, at the front door.
Our long hallway is now cosy, quiet, the small radiator now adequate, no whistling wind noise or draughts, an amazing difference, for such a small(ish) outlay.

Being cold is debilitating and miserable making.

17°c

14 degrees in our living room today. That's with the clothes airer thing on which is taking 3 times as long to dry the washing as it did 2 months ago. Heating is so expensive so we are trying to hold off putting it on for as long as possible but I'm beginning to think that what we are saving on heating is being used up on mould spray for the walls and having the clothes dryer on constantly.

LBFseBrom · 27/11/2023 17:11

23degC. It's nice and cosy, just right.

Caswallonthefox · 27/11/2023 18:32

Outside is 7° and my room is now 15°. I woke up to 11°.
