What's the temperature in your house tonight?

My thermostat says 16 degrees and it's freezing, but still trying not to put the heating on! I have young DS but have made sure he is wrapped up nice and warm in bed.

It's currently 0 degrees outside where I am. I have a dressing gown on and a blanket and I can still feel the cold. Not sure when I'll put the heating on though.

What about you?

1 degree outside, heating has been on and it’s 18 inside.

funbags3 · 25/11/2023 23:55

22 here at the mo. I cannot bear being cold. I live in an old house and it can get quite damp if the heating isn't used.

Tulipvase · 25/11/2023 23:56

Our house was 15 yesterday with no heating. We are a draughty Victorian terrace.

We use log burners mostly with some heating.

Im surprised some people are as low as 11/12 degrees unless they live very rurally or northerly. Or being in a terrace has a bigger effect than I thought.

Our heating it set to come on if the house temperature drops below 16 degrees. We are currently at 20 degrees indoors. The house is well insulated which helps.
we all (me, DH and 2DC) have heated blankets, knock off oodies and plenty of other layers etc to help keep us all toasty.

cant wait until the open fire is fitted though.

LBFseBrom · 25/11/2023 23:58

I have my heating on all the time, obviously when the weather is warm I turn it right down. I could not stand being cold and heating is one thing on which I will not economise. Early last year the boiler went bust, it was a tragedy for me though I coped until I had a new one installed.

whatisheupto · 25/11/2023 23:59

15 degrees upstairs. Feel fine as I'm in bed.
About 18 degrees downstairs as the woodburner warms it up.
We don't have any other heating!

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/11/2023 00:02

Different temperatures in different rooms as we have Hive and radiators are all controlled independently. Bedroom is 23.5.

Susuwatariandkodama · 26/11/2023 00:02

21.5, I refuse to cold in my own home.

user6776 · 26/11/2023 00:02

@AlwaysGinPlease I wish I had those as I think certain rooms are definitely colder than others in my house

-2 outside. The heating is set to 16 but the thermostat says its 20 inside.

We have a new build house with air source heating and good insulation it never really drops below 19 even with the heating off.

PickAChew · 26/11/2023 00:04

18-22, depending on the room (kitchen is a newish extension and always warmer) but the thermostat has just gone down to 14 for the night. Might knock it up a couple degrees so autistic Ds2 is less likely to wake us all up at 3am yet again.

larkstar · 26/11/2023 00:05

@Tulipvase when my boiler broke down one December a few years ago it was out of action for 5 days waiting for parts - it took 3 attempts to fix it - it was over 10 years old which I don't think I'd incredibly old. The house gradually got colder and colder until it was down to 10C - all I had for heating was a 2 burner camping gas cooker which generated a lot of condensation - my detached house was built mid-60's. I had every ceiling dropped and new roof insulation put in in 2015 so I can believe some people are seeing temperatures down to 10/11C - my daughter's modern student accommodation was down to 7C it was pointless putting the heating on as there was no insulation in the place and barely made any difference and was very expensive.

Nearlyspring23 · 26/11/2023 00:05

18.5 with the heating on for about 2.5hours today. Feels perfect for me, still need a jumper and blanket, but perfectly comfortable and I don’t feel cold at all.

I was determined not to have the heating on much last year and it was so cold. This year I have a baby and so have mentally allowed myself to be a bit more relaxed with it and prepared myself for a bigger than usual bill. I’m currently on £400 credit which will help.
I have also brought a dehumidifier and I do think it is helping to keep the house feeling warmer. It is nice to be in a warm and dry house. A luxury I am really not used to.

Definitely worth getting, that way you can heat whichever room you like to what temperature you like. The app is easy to use too.

Desecratedcoconut · 26/11/2023 00:10

19.8, it's -1c outside and the heating will kick in overnight if it drops to 17c.

DandelionPockets · 25/11/2023 22:49

A nice 20 degrees in my bedroom right now. Keeping me and the baby warm!

19 for the same reason. Any less and baby wakes every half hour 🙈 meanwhile the toddler is sweating out so just can't win!

user6776 · 26/11/2023 00:12

@AlwaysGinPlease I can imagine it would be expensive to set up though?

If the temperature is 18 in the sitting room, on the heating goes

Happyhippos21 · 26/11/2023 00:19

We have thermostat set to 17.5. Feels cold sometimes but we have blankets for watching tv and can wear a heavy jumper. Usually it feels okay as we are used to a cooler house but once a week or less will use one hour heating boost. I like my bedroom being cold and airy so leave window on latch at night and use a hot water bottle.

R4R1 · 26/11/2023 00:22

I keep the heat on all the time.

To all those living in 16c is insane.

Maybe you should find and seal any gaps and insulate your house.

MaidOfSteel · 26/11/2023 00:24

I've just got back from picking my husband up and it was -6°C outside. Its about 18/19 in the house; a bit warmer in the bedroom, though, as I put the portable radiator on before I set off.

user6776 · 26/11/2023 00:25

@MaidOfSteel Minus 6! Where are you in the country?

In my bit of the house (converted garage) the heating is programmed to stay about 7. It’s on.

I can understand in some circumstances that happens but it normally takes an extended cold period. I didn’t think it was that cold anywhere at the moment but it might be.

I think it’s more likely that thermostats aren’t all that accurate.
