What's the temperature in your house tonight?

My thermostat says 16 degrees and it's freezing, but still trying not to put the heating on! I have young DS but have made sure he is wrapped up nice and warm in bed.

It's currently 0 degrees outside where I am. I have a dressing gown on and a blanket and I can still feel the cold. Not sure when I'll put the heating on though.

What about you?

We went away for two days so I left heating on 12c and had still used over £5 of gas today when we got home at 6pm.
i turned the thermostat up to 16 and had used £7.50 by 10pm.
I’m expecting to spend at least £8/10 a day on energy over winter.

@Namenumber3 Yikes! I know the feeling, mines been on whilst I've been out and agree it feels like a waste.

18.2. where I am in the kitchen. Heating was on but it's off now, and the insulation here is terrible. I'm pretty comfortable though.

Friendfoe1 · 25/11/2023 23:07

The bedroom is 19.8 I’m too hot to sleep 😏

MissingMoominMamma · 25/11/2023 23:09

I’ve turned it up to 19 today.

SheTookChances · 25/11/2023 23:09

Our bedroom is 22, the heating has only just gone off though. I hate being cold.

Could you maybe get one of those heated blankets if you’re struggling, they’re apparently cheap to use.

DappledThings · 25/11/2023 23:13

We had the radiator in our room removed months ago for some decorating. Keep forgetting to get a new one.

Caswallonthefox · 25/11/2023 23:13

13.5. I live in a grade 2 listed building, so can't have upvc, which means that using central heating means I heat outside.
I have an oil fired radiator which I use, but also wear layers and wrap up in blankets. I'm currently sat under 2 blankets, have knitted socks on and a sleeveless knitted cardie. I'm still warm.

Paddleboarder · 25/11/2023 23:13

My house was only 10 degrees this afternoon before I put the heating on. It's the first time I've had it on for any considerable amount of time this year, but it is an old and poorly insulated house and we couldn't bear it!

user6776 · 25/11/2023 23:15

@Paddleboarder 10 degrees! You must have been freezing 🥶

It's 19 downstairs and the heating is off until morning. The bedrooms are a little cooler.

Scrowy · 25/11/2023 23:15

I've no idea but it's lovely and warm. I've just chucked a bucket of coal and a couple of logs in the range and turned the dampners down to keep it in and hopefully warm until morning. It was just starting to get a bit nippy before I stoked it up and when I went outside for the fuel its clearly a hard frost tonight.

We also have central heating but the house is 400 years old and was designed to be heated from the fireplaces in the middle of the house- we put the heating on as well in the morning and evenings.

Its important to us to be warm in our house as we work outside in all weathers and we prioritise being warm over pretty much everything else except food and sleep.

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/11/2023 23:16

Heating kicks back in if it drops below 18.5 at night. Have it higher during the day at the moment, it’s cold in central Scotland just now.

CatSat · 25/11/2023 23:18

13 degrees inside. Minus 2 degrees outside.

Loulou599 · 25/11/2023 23:19

Living in the UK I have found people's attitudes to heating crazy, like its a kind of pride to not use heating or like its some luxury. To me it's probably the most basic human comfort, having a warm house in winter

CatSat · 25/11/2023 23:20

I have a furry hot water bottle snoring beside me and don't tend to feel the cold too much.

BlueEyedPeanut · 25/11/2023 23:20

My thermostat is set at 22. Heating is always "on". I rarely hear it power up. If it does, it's usually in the middle of the night for about 20 mins.

user6776 · 25/11/2023 23:20

@Loulou599 I agree it's a basic comfort, but high energy prices take that away from many and people have no choice.

@BlueEyedPeanut Isn't your gas bill expensive or do you find it works out cheaper that way?

CotswoldGal · 25/11/2023 23:22

-1 outside, lounge has between 18 and 20 degrees - that’s our optimum comfort level, if it goes over 21 we turn it down

kitsuneghost · 25/11/2023 23:23

It was 13.5 this afternoon
It is now 18 as I put it on to dry the washing.

Digimoor · 25/11/2023 23:23

21 in the room I'm in now, 18 in others

Handovertothetedcross · 25/11/2023 23:24

20 and very thankful. The idea of 13 degrees is just awful, I'm so sorry 😔

BlueEyedPeanut · 25/11/2023 23:25

user6776 · 25/11/2023 23:21

Not really. I have a prepay meter so all year round I put in £80 a month. Hardly any of it gets used over the summer so by the time winter comes I have a good buffer.

The house is pretty well insulate which helps. I have curtains over the exit doors and good thermal ones in the rooms. The radiators aren't on in the bedrooms because I find the heat rising from under the floorboards makes the bedrooms nice and toasty anyway.

Wishitsnows · 25/11/2023 23:26

This thread just made me go and check. It is 25, probably should have checked earlier as I thought I was having hot flushes!
