What's the temperature in your house tonight?

My thermostat says 16 degrees and it's freezing, but still trying not to put the heating on! I have young DS but have made sure he is wrapped up nice and warm in bed.

It's currently 0 degrees outside where I am. I have a dressing gown on and a blanket and I can still feel the cold. Not sure when I'll put the heating on though.

What about you?

21 and lovely and cosy!

Pugdays · 26/11/2023 00:44

I was saying to husband yesterday ,I am so glad our children are older teen and adults ,IIT would be awful to have a baby or young child like this
We have a bought from new 25 years ago house ..which the builders used an old type of heating and hot water system..which is not economical and we are struggling with cost ..so the house is very cold .. heating and hot water are one of our biggest expenses ,and I'm becoming obsessed with the smart meter ,and trying to figure out what electrical equipment is causing most of the cost .
But yes ,I have such sympathy for people trying to keep babies warm.
My mum's care home ,is always boiling hot ,I roast going in there ...just waiting for the increase in bills ,to compensate.😬

We have just had a baby and I'm dreading our heating bill🙄

Feel very lucky to be in a new build (4yo) and was built as an eco house. I set my downstairs to be at 22 but literally never clicks on as always above this.

Upstairs set at 18 and only clicked in 2/3 times so far this year.

Somethings I put it on to warm through the walls, did this earlier for couple of hours and the themo currently says 30! Sat in a nightie boiling...

I really feel for anyone in a house that loses all the heat. It's so expensive having the heating on!

elliejjtiny · 26/11/2023 01:51

It's 15 inside our house at the moment. It's ok when I've got plenty of clothes on but everything is taking so long to dry. This morning I was chain drinking tea while waiting for my hoodie to dry.

MintJulia · 26/11/2023 03:36

I leave the heating off all week when I wfh, and only use it early mornings and evenings.
Thermostat set to 18. currently about 12 in my bedroom, which is perfect for sleeping. 😊

GetUpStandUp4 · 26/11/2023 04:48

wow im suprised how warm most people's houses are. our 1930s semi doesn't retain heat. at night our kids rooms regularly drop to 14. yesterday they were 10c. at 2am tonight they were 12 so I put the heating on for a while to stop them getting to 10. currently 13c

childofthewild · 26/11/2023 05:16

11.5 right now. Small house, all open-plan with no carpets so house doesn't hold heat very well. The electric blanket goes on right before bedtime (for no more than half an hour) and occasionally we put the heating on in the evenings to bump it up to 14 if it's really cold.

Pets are all warm enough which is the main thing. The hoomans just wear extra layers.

Lizzieregina · 26/11/2023 05:30

It’s 21 but going down to 18 shortly. It’ll get down to -4c outside tonight.

meatbaseddessert · 26/11/2023 05:51

24c. Unpleasantly hot. Dog has her own fan.

NZ.

yearsandyearsago · 26/11/2023 06:31

I'm in an uninsulated Victorian end terrace. Just woken up and this morning it is 12 degrees.

I've not set up the thermostat timer programs yet this year, so we're just switching it on manually when we need it, but I think I might soon set one up so it's warmer in the mornings.

Our house takes bloody ages to heat up and does not retain it at all when we turn the heating off again. Now I've got the heating on, I think we will probably hit 18 degrees by 9am. If I turn it off in this weather, we'll be under 16 within a couple of hours easily.

I think we might qualify for free loft insulation under the government scheme; I've applied but not heard anything yet. Fingers crossed!

sanabria · 26/11/2023 07:35

Thermostat set to 19c in the day which I find is warm enough for us, and switched off at night. It was -3 last night and temp dropped to 16c inside.
We have a small oil heater for toddlers room so it stays at a steady 18 through the night.
New build, so well insulated and heats up incredibly quickly. It took just 10minutes for downstairs to go from 16 to 19 this morning.

user6776 · 26/11/2023 07:40

15.5 when I woke up this morning. Heating is on for an hour or so

user6776 · 26/11/2023 00:12

@AlwaysGinPlease I can imagine it would be expensive to set up though?

I think it is around about 1K for all the equipment and professional installation. The radiator thermostats which we fitted ourselves as it's easy, are around £50 each but they were in a black Friday sale the other day as my friend got some for less about £40 I think. You can only connect them to certain radiators though. Have a google.

FrenchandSaunders · 26/11/2023 07:46

Left the thermostat at 14 last night and it kicked in which is unusual. Have it on at 18 in the daytime when we’re home.

BloodOrangeCheesecake · 26/11/2023 07:57

This thread is so fucking depressing.

We live in top 5 economy in the world with millionaire PM, minted royal family, Tory party who were accepting “donations” from Russians for years etc yet people here are cheerfully competing whose thermostat is on the lowest setting

TinselTarTars · 26/11/2023 07:59

Turned the smart meter off, we both work full time and had almost 500 pounds in credit from paying the same amount throughout the summer. I refuse to live in Britain in 2023 and be cold.
However, when I work from home and everyone's out, I do sit on a hot water bottle!

Desecratedcoconut · 26/11/2023 08:00

I'm really looking forward to Labour coming in and defying global forces and everyone will have warm homes and the streets will be paved with gold.

DinosApple · 26/11/2023 08:00

It's 12 upstairs at the moment, it will be about 15 downstairs.

DH has put the heating on as we survived 6 weeks with no boiler last year in the cold snap. Once the fabric of the house gets cold and damp it is awful. We'll light the fire after lunch too.

Tbh after last year (it was around 6 degrees in doors), anything in double figures is great!

Loulou599 · 26/11/2023 08:10

@BloodOrangeCheesecake
Yeah it is. "The trick is to keep moving", "wear a hat"....
I mean is this Britain 2023 or is this the viking era 😂
I think this is a big cultural difference though, I noticed in the UK lots of people spend lots of time and money doing constant home improvements, also lots of money on food related things (foodie stuff) but...They prefer to wear oodies and skiing socks and sit in their cold (but really improved?) house like its 1912

Wholesale gas prices that are currently cheaper than pre-war and multibillion energy companies profits are hardly “global forces”

Desecratedcoconut · 26/11/2023 08:17

Good. Should be super easy for a new government to fix.

margotrose · 26/11/2023 08:17

Ours was 13.8 when I woke up this morning. It's about -1 outside.

The thermostat is set to 18 which is perfectly warm enough for us - we spend around £60 a month in the winter and have the heating on for 3-4 hours a day.

Rarely dips below 17 during the daytime though.

OldTinHat · 26/11/2023 08:29

Mine was 12.9 whilst I was watching Celebrity. Flipping freezing!

TerribleWoman · 26/11/2023 08:34

Ours is warm. We will find the money.
I would rather not have holidays and cut back on food bills than sit in a 12 degree house.
