What's the temperature in your house tonight?

My thermostat says 16 degrees and it's freezing, but still trying not to put the heating on! I have young DS but have made sure he is wrapped up nice and warm in bed.

It's currently 0 degrees outside where I am. I have a dressing gown on and a blanket and I can still feel the cold. Not sure when I'll put the heating on though.

What about you?

It was 11 when I woke up. Heating on. I’d rather sit in the dark than the cold.

It was -6 here last night. -4 when we got home about 8pm.

Piscesmumma1978 · 26/11/2023 08:53

20 degrees in my room now.

We have oil. I much prefer that because we keep an eye on the tank level and prices. If we were gas I think I'd turn it down. I used to hate not knowing what my bill would be.

hattie43 · 26/11/2023 09:23

I don't care what the temperature is because my heating is on and I'm not prepared to freeze . I bloody hate being cold

Living in the UK I have found people's attitudes to heating crazy, like its a kind of pride to not use heating or like its some luxury. To me it's probably the most basic human comfort, having a warm house in winter

It's the cost that people are worried about . If people could afford the bills everyone would be warm

wow im suprised how warm most people's houses are. our 1930s semi doesn't retain heat. at night our kids rooms regularly drop to 14. yesterday they were 10c. at 2am tonight they were 12 so I put the heating on for a while to stop them getting to 10. currently 13c

Have you checked the level of insulation in the loft? That seems a very quick drop in temperature. Our large windowed single glazed Edwardian detached house with no cavity wall insulation (I’m not even sure it had cavity walls?) wouldn’t lose temperature that quickly overnight, even in a really cold winter. It was heated to 22, and the lowest it’d get to was 16. Even when we went to Australia for 3 weeks in February and left the heating on its frost setting the house was still 13 degrees when we got home. Some solar gain obviously lifted temperatures in the day, but if you’re loosing 10 degrees overnight something sounds wrong?

PiggieWig · 26/11/2023 09:26

I’ve just come down and it’s 11.5°. Fuck that. I’ve put the heating on.

Cheeesus · 26/11/2023 09:28

Ours dropped from 19 to 16.5 overnight. I can see on the heating app, it’s warmed up since then. That’s quite surprising because it’s zero here. We did have underfloor insulation put in last winter though.

letsgojo · 26/11/2023 09:32

Locked on 21 from end of October until the spring. Would rather spend money on heating than go cold

Elphame · 26/11/2023 09:33

It was 11c in my sitting room yesterday at 5pm. The heating comes on at 6pm

Currently about 16 at the moment but the morning heating timer goes off in half an hour

TravellingT · 26/11/2023 09:38

24° overnight, 20-22° in the day. We have 5 kids, can't risk them getting cold. The house is well insulated but when left empty it gets very chilly

2dogsandabudgie · 26/11/2023 09:39

I hate being cold so our thermostat is set at 21 degrees. OP, do you have a smart meter, and how do you pay for your energy. We pay monthly as it's easier that way rather than waiting for a larger bill every quarter.

It’s not the cost for everyone, I agree with the first post that there is a weird mentality. I know people who hate to put the heating in but think nothing of expensive holidays, cars etc.

I keep the heat on all the time.

To all those living in 16c is insane.

Maybe you should find and seal any gaps and insulate your house.

Mine is really well insulated, it's a new build apartment but often goes down to 15/16c
I open the windows in the morning for ventilation but if I don't put heating on after that it just sort of stays cold
In summer it's blissfully cool so I know the insulation is ok

purpleme12 · 26/11/2023 10:03

It's 3 degrees outside and 10 degrees inside.
But I'm still in bed. I have had window open a little bit in night. I'm really cosy in bed so i don't mind it at night. I'll put heating on when we get up

Loulou599 · 26/11/2023 10:04

True but I think it's also linked to a capitalist and "property as investment" mindset. People tend to prefer old properties I've noticed, and houses as well. So you often see a situation where somebody has bought a house with more bedrooms than they actually need and have prioritised the aesthetic but then have to scrimp on things like heating. So they are freezing cold but at least they made the "smart investment decision" to buy a 2 bed cottage instead of a 1 bed apartment if you get me

There are definitely people who simply can't afford to put the heating on.

But there is definitely a competitive aspect to it on here when it comes to how cold people keep their homes.

Bluevelvetsofa · 25/11/2023 22:46

We overpaid fuel in the summer. I’m not prepared to freeze again this year.

I did that last year and bloody energy company kept refunding me.

KateLawsonDidIt · 26/11/2023 11:14

My kitchen was 11 deg at 11am this morning when I got up

Totally agree. My friend is married to a much older man. They have a gorgeous 5 bed house. Children have left home. He has an excellent company pension, old age pension and winter allowances etc. He wont put the heating on unless it goes below 12!
I think that would be grounds for divorce.

trader21c · 26/11/2023 18:00

16 degrees in the living room but the gas fire is on and I am under the heated throw. The gas CH comes on in half an hour - TBH It’s cold!

elliejjtiny · 26/11/2023 22:24

I'm sitting here with my 17 year old ds laughing at the posts about competitive heating. At least laughing is keeping us warmish. 15 degrees here and the house is being heated by the dishwasher.

megletthesecond · 26/11/2023 22:33

21° in my bedroom.

pacora · 26/11/2023 22:46

If you can at all, insulate your home.

Our heating comes on at 22 during the day and the house heats up quickly and it goes off for the night at 2030 hrs. I see the house doesn't usually drop below 20 with no heating on (and our bedroom window open; door closed obviously) although it did go down to about 18 last night about 4am.

Definitely this. Like I say my house was built as an eco home with massive amounts of insulation and similarly doesn't drop in temp.

My old house was colder and I got insulation put into the walls/loft and it made a massive difference.

I know money is tight and not everyone can afford it but look into grants etc. it definitely helps.

12.5 degrees inside currently. Boiler is broken.
