How old were you when your periods stopped

Just curious as I'm 51 and they're still regular.

OP posts:
CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 24/11/2023 02:07

51 but had three over the previous three years prior to them stopping (every 11months x3).

Theoldwoman · 24/11/2023 03:12

I’m 53 and still regular.

Purrrrrdy · 24/11/2023 04:30

Last one was in November 2021, when I was 52.

RampantIvy · 23/11/2023 07:48

50
I believe the average age is 52.
What influences the age they stop?
Does it have anything to do with the number of successful pregnancies? Is the number of months you are period free during a pregnancy added on at the end?

I had one child BTW.

Ooo interesting theory.

52 or 53, I can’t remember! I went on HRT before they had completely stopped as my Mum had osteoporosis.
I would have liked them to carry on further through my fifties.

Why?

MadamVastra · 23/11/2023 11:42

Also if you stop before 50 it's 2 years without a period before you are considered menopausal, over 50 it's 1 year

well that's my understanding anyway

I've never heard that.

TerfTalking · 24/11/2023 06:10

53

theemmadilemma · 24/11/2023 06:12

47, very irregular.

Althenameshavegone · 24/11/2023 06:29

@OnGoldenPond gosh, are you ok now? If it’s ok to ask, what were your other symptoms?

Falmouthflipflops · 24/11/2023 06:44

57, 4 children, 3 stone weight gain and now lost.

Now 64, still fit and healthy but constantly watching weight. Elustriously thick and long hair until 2 years ago, rapidly thinning and losing strength. Marine Collagen and supplements essential.

Why does nobody tell you just how crap it is?

blibblibs · 24/11/2023 06:50

48 and still on a regular 23 day cycle. Just finished a 21 day period and really hoping that was a last hurrah and it's not going to turn up in two days!

UseOfWeapons · 24/11/2023 06:55

At 45, had my last period, previous one was 7 months before. Nothing after that. I’d had a lot of IVF and IUI, and was warned that my menopause might be a bit early.

Ooo interesting theory.

I once read that if you are having sex they are likely to go on a bit longer, also read that not having children might delay the end, but nothing seems very definite or well known. The average age of menarche seems to have gone down a lot but menopause seems more stable so maybe it’s more genetic.

@OnGoldenPond gosh, are you ok now? If it’s ok to ask, what were your other symptoms?

Yes fully recovered now thanks, this was quite a few years ago now. It was in fact not a cancerous tumour but a rare fast growing benign tumour. However, it was in my cerebellum very close to the brain stem and was in danger of impinging on the area controlling autonomic functions including breathing and heartbeat. Apparently I could have stopped breathing or my heart could have stopped at any time! Pretty scary at the time! However, I had surgery three days after diagnosis and quickly recovered with no problems since so I was very, very lucky.

My first symptom was the sudden stopping of my periods when I had previously been regular as clockwork. However, this wasn't recognised as being out of the ordinary by GP. About six months later I started suffering worsening unsteadiness and nausea. This wasn't taken seriously by GP and it got to the point where I couldn't walk across the room without holding onto furniture or I fell over. The GP just prescribed anti sickness medication. After six months of repeat visits to the GP a locum decided to change the anti sickness meds as the ones I had been taking were apparently very powerful ones that acted directly on the nausea centres of the brain and were no longer recommended. The day after switching I began constantly vomiting all day long with no let up. After emergency GP appointment finally got referral to neurologist. GP strongly recommended I use my private medical cover, he clearly knew there was something badly wrong. Luckily saw neurologist a few days later who got me a same day MRI and the tumour was found. Three days later I had surgery.

It's actually scary to think that if that locum hadn't switched my meds the symptoms would have continued to have been masked until it was too late. The surgeon said if it had been left just a couple of weeks longer I probably wouldn't have made it.

romany4 · 24/11/2023 11:38

Mine had gone 6 months apart at 51
I've just started HRT and they've come back. I'm not impressed!!

Gymnopedie · 24/11/2023 12:38

61 but I was prepared for it. For the vast majority of women the biggest single factor in when you'll go through it - more than lifestyle, diet, exercise, drinking, smoking etc put together - is when did your mum have hers. My mum had to have a hysterectomy at 60 because she was bleeding heavily for 10 days out of every 14. Fortunatley for me I avoided that and sailed through it when it happened, with a very occasional night sweat as my only symptom. Still have no problems apart from a slightly bigger stomach.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/01/2024 18:11

shellyleppard · 04/01/2024 19:10

Op I was 52. Had the coil for three years previous due to horrendously heavy periods premenopause.

JFT · 07/01/2024 14:40

Mine never stopped until recent surgery aged 53.5, now I'm in surgical menopause as I have no uterus or ovaries.

My GP assured me she never met anyone still menstruating by aged 57, however, this thread blew that theory out the water.
