How old were you when your periods stopped

Just curious as I'm 51 and they're still regular.

OP posts:

@adriftabroad PS. And when I stopped using Everol Sequi. Guess what? I still had periods for at least another year. At that point, I wasn't on HRT at all.

JFT · 23/11/2023 12:29

Are you on any HRT?

I'm 53 with no signs of menopause yet (ie still regular cycle and no hot flushes or anything) and my mum didn't have her's til age 56.

I'm having major surgery and hysterectomy next week. So I'll go straight into surgical menopause. I know menstrual cycle affects my hunger as I get ravenously hungry / binge eating in the week before bleeding starts. I'd be glad to get rid of that but if HRT helps then I'll be asking for it.

Yes, and I would definitely ask for it.

HRT is a fraction of the hormones you get premenopase anyway.
Best of luck next week x

I am geninely not very hungry anymore!

ginasevern · 23/11/2023 12:35

I was 52. I had no menopausal symptoms whatsoever, not even one hot flush. However, I did have the most crippling period pains that used to make me vomit and faint every month from age 12. So, some kind of justice I suppose.

Hbh17 · 23/11/2023 12:38

56 (but also I hardly had any at all between 33ish and 48).

I use Oestrogel and ugesterone, vaginally.

I have never used patches.

You were obviously NOT yet in menopause. I definitely am!

LBFseBrom · 23/11/2023 12:38

I had my last period aged 51 years + 6-7 months. 51 was average age for that 22 years ago, I don't know if that has changed. I am an average person, started periods aged just thirteen and that was the 'average' age for then. I also grew to average height :-).

People stop periods at different ages, I know some who were mid forties and one lady who was 56!

Ohmylovejune · 23/11/2023 12:38

In my late 40s I went to once every 6 months or so, flooding sadly but I coped as it wasn't often. That continued for a few years and they finally stopped around 51.

Lioney · 23/11/2023 12:40

I was 41.

Nothing could I have prepared me for what was coming.

Post Menopause is like a living hell. HRT just brought a different set of issues and symptoms.

doublec · 23/11/2023 12:45

@adriftabroad Apolgies, am currently dealing with chemo for breast cancer and have horrific chemo brain. I thought you mentioned you used Everol Sequi. Must have misread.

However, after I stopped using Everol Sequi, I had an HRT break for 6 months before seeing an actual women's health specialist and using similar as you, in the same way. My periods still stopped even though I was on HRT. You are still in perimenopause and your periods will stop even if you're using HRT.

misunderstoodMilo · 23/11/2023 12:46

I was about 51 when I started missing months and my periods became lighter. I kept thinking “is this going to be the last month?” because I was more than ready for them to stop.

They finally stopped in November 2021 when I was 53 and I know we hear terrible things about the menopause but apart from a foggy brain which I tend to put down to general ageing mine has been OK so I’ve been lucky. I don’t miss periods, the heavy months, cramps and mood swings one bit.

adriftabroad · 23/11/2023 12:46

@doublec but these "periods" are 3 days of extremely light bleeding. 5 days after stopping the ugesterone. It is shedding the lining of the womb that has built up from the oestrogel.

I only take the progesterone element 10 days a month. Vaginally, NOT orally.

NCTDN · 23/11/2023 11:49

I'll not sure that I'm glad I asked ! 51 isn't that old then and I really hoped the end was in sightGrin

I think the signs to look for is that the gaps get longer between periods. My last two were about 6 months apart.

LoveTheDarts · 23/11/2023 12:50

44 via chemo.

@doublec so sorry to hear that Flowers

Who knows? These doctors/specialists all say different things. 🙄

I am just glad to feel (slightly) better! I feel totally abnormal without HRT.

Me too! Dealing with cancer is the easy part. Am far more upset about having to stop HRT as it was life-changing for me.

As for me, I'll be fine. My BC is highly treatable, chemo is more for recurrence (due to a rare double genetic mutation) - the cancer has already been cut out. They want me to do endocrine therapy afterwards, but given I am having to deal with all the horrible part of menopause again, I don't know if I want to completely shut down my body's own ability to make oestrogen as everything particularly the sweats, hot flushes and brain fog will only get worse. It's gets to a point where quality of life is to my mind, more important than quantity.

doublec · 23/11/2023 13:22

@adriftabroad PS. That's interesting about your 'periods'. I always had very very light, very very short periods, so what you're describing is how mine where.

aintnospringchicken · 23/11/2023 13:44

I was 48 when I had my last period which was 8 months after the previous period.

adriftabroad · 23/11/2023 13:51

@doublec that sounds awful and I am so sorry.

Hooray that it is all under control. I have a friend who says the same thing as you regarding treatment/menopause.

I know I am post menopause but something aint right. I am feeling worse and light "periods" getting lighter all the time, so what you say makes some sense. I dread them saying "oh, you are through it" which of course, we never are. Post menopause is permanent.

I wish you the best going forward x

Nearly 57 and still regular. My sister is 60 and still regular

WWYDlookingafterdad · 23/11/2023 14:26

It is so strange there doesn't seem to be a more medical way to determine whether you are peri or menopausal than waiting a full year. If we are all born with a set amount of eggs that are released until no more are left, surely there should be a scan of sorts available to determine how full/empty the "tank" is? I realise how tiny the eggs are, but still...

For most women it's a natural part of ageing and something that doesn't need to be medicalised.

CharlotteBog · 23/11/2023 11:54

I have never come across the 1 or 2 year distinction. Where did you hear this?

Years ago from some specialist or another I can't remember! A quick google comes up with the from an nhs trust site

Following a hysteroscopy, I was informed that I had active follicles releasing eggs (or something I didn't quite understand) which was 'proof' that I wasn't menopausal. Having said that same hysterectomy was perpetrated by a complete loon who severely injured me then covered it up, so who knows what to believe.

WWYDlookingafterdad · 23/11/2023 14:54

I think this thread shows how easily it is missed and mis-understood. By medicalising I mean if a woman is worried or having conflicting symptoms, rather than assuming she is peri and putting her on HRT or menopausal after 1 year when they might be anemic, surely a scan of sorts would be a non-invasive way to get a fairly accurate guess? I'm just imagining that if this was a male issue it wouldn't be left for a year before you were allowed to start HRT to ensure you don't get osteoperosis, a life changing disease, for example.
