Lovely stuff, let's hope Jenerick is the start of something...

I will never forget that a Minister of State took time out of his day - and money from the taxpayer - to insist Detention Centre workers paint over Disney characters because they were 'too welcoming' to refugee kids.

Every time I see his face I think petty little man.

Me too nasty nasty, unfortunately like many of them that are left now oh for the days of Hesletine, Clarke, Major never agreed with the politics but they always seemed to be quite decent & not full of hateful rhetoric.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 19:01

Yvette Cooper just eviscerated Cleverley on the new bill.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 19:02

Unsurprisingly he answered none of her questions.

pointythings · 06/12/2023 19:04

Every time you think the Tories can't shred themselves any further, they do...

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 19:06

It has been a while since they’ve served up this much chaos in an evening.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 19:12

Trying to defend this as a bill that protects people from being trafficked abroad against their will by evil traffickers is quite a take.

Yeah. Their win at all costs strategy appears to be proving just that.

IClaudine · 06/12/2023 19:15

Blimey. Is this the start of Sunak's leadership collapsing? There can't be another leadership election, for God's sake. Put us all out of our misery and call a GE.

Let me get this straight - we’re not going to leave the ECHR or disapply bits of it we’re just going to ignore any judgements from Strasbourg when it comes to Rwanda. And we are going to disapply part of he UK human rights act specifically in the case of Rwanda.

I’m sure everybody’s going to be just fine with that.

I am a little confused as to why anyone would trust the UK with an international treaty at present, since we appear to want to go into an international treaty in order to break another one.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 19:22

They are genuinely mad enough to be positioning themselves for another leadership election.

Truss was out on maneuvers at the weekend trumpeting her Private members bill that had its first (and probably only) reading today. Had some of the "know what a woman is" folk swooning in admiration.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 19:30

Suella’s done it with her equivalent of the rivers of blood speech this afternoon and now Jenrick’s on manoeuvres too.

If they go for the last possible date for an election they can squeeze at least another 2 PMs in.

Jenrick for PM, surely not.
Probably thinks he will be deputy PM and Chancellor for Cruella.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 19:40

I think Truss has shown anyone can be PM for 6 weeks if they really want.

pointythings · 06/12/2023 19:44

Some smart person in the Guardian comments pointing out that Newark is an anagram.

cakeorwine · 06/12/2023 19:52

What's more important?
International Law or the rule of Parliament?

Because Danny Kruger just said that Parliament is more important.

So the next time a country breaks international law, we will be hypocrites to criticise them as they can just say "Our Parliament says it's ok so tough shit"

Not a good look

God knows what would happen. I daresay there's some similar precedent over the centuries in this country. I mean don't they usually have a confidence in the government vote? But traditionally the government then rallies around the PM and it barely causes a ripple. But here? There's been so much loony behaviour in the last few years it's hard to predict.

Remember the time when the hung parliament of 2010 and subsequent coalition was interesting because of its comparative rarity? Seems quite ordinary now.

Notonthestairs · 06/12/2023 20:06

"Jenrick for PM, surely not.

Agreed. This has nothing all to do with Rwanda or immigration or principles or what is best for the country or any other flannel he puts out.

Jenrick knows the Conservatives party will turn further right after the election and he's getting out in front of it.

Exactly as he did when May's premiership faltered and he cowrote that article in the Times saying only Johnson can save the party. And then Johnson sank and he threw himself behind getting Sunak elected.

Jenrick is looking after himself.

tobee · 06/12/2023 20:06

Amazing how Braverman and Truss might be up for this. Amazing how lacking in self awareness.

I think even Johnson is more self aware.

Quite why they are all lining up to lead the Tories to defeat in the GE after next is beyond me.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 21:03

And Rishi’s response. I’m not sure ‘this bill is the toughest piece of illegal migration legislation ever put forward by a U.K. government’ is the wording he was looking for. He’s not wrong. It probably is the most illegal piece of migration legislation ever put forward. Probably the most illegal piece of legislation ever.

"This [Rwanda] bill is the toughest piece of illegal migration legislation ever put forward by a UK government. It makes clear that Parliament deems Rwanda safe and no court can second guess that"

So because Parliament says Rwanda is safe, then it's safe....Hmm
