Rwanda wouldn't agree to a treaty that broke international legislation. So taking the treaty as far as Jenrick/Braverman want would collapse the entire plan.

Jenrick must have known this when he penned his resignation letter and yet he went ahead anyway. Presumably assuming we'd overlook that.

He's resigning over something that can't happen in reality.

It's all very Brexity.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 21:28

As it is it breaches international law. Cleverley’s had to write that on the front of the thing. Which incidentally is not quite what he said in Parliament. I guess like all other lies we overlook that now.

Sometime in the future GCSE history students are going to have to study Britain and the Tory Party 2016-2024. Poor sods.

Well they sure as hell won’t be bored. The Telegraph is now saying they’re going to lose the next election because they’re too left wing for their voters. You really couldn’t invent this madness.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/12/2023 21:48

That was essentially what Suella said I think. But with more detaining immigrants.

In other news the government have delayed the publication of the covid winter infection survey and would like it delayed further. Apparently we might not go out and spend money if we think it’ll make us ill before Christmas.

"It makes clear that Parliament deems Rwanda safe and no court can second guess that"

That "logic" is so insane.... can't even.....

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/12/2023 22:58

Oh my goodness. Victoria Derbyshire on Newsnight is being bloody brilliant.
Campbell Bannerman is fucking delusional.

No wonder we are fucked.

Jenrick’s resignation letter / pitch to the mad fuckers.

And in shock news tonight, most of the right wing press front pages ignore Boris Johnson at the covid inquiry, excepting The Telegraph with their headline that Johnson choked with emotion at the inquiry.

I was equally stunned ti discover the pope's particular form of Christianity and the whereabouts of the lavatorial facilities of bears.

LittleBowSheep · 07/12/2023 01:05

@tobee yes, I noticed they were very quiet on that front too.

On Wednesday the idiot Littlejohn from the DM did a piece about how Boris was 'going to blow the bloody doors off' the inquiry.

Oddly not a peep out of him today.

Such a good article

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/dec/06/boris-johnson-covid-inquiry-britain-leader

This stood out...
Unlike fanatical Brexiteers, he lacked any idea of the kind of Britain he sought to create, except one that would glorify and gratify him. He was in Downing Street not because of what he wanted to do but because of what he wanted to be. He was there because he wanted to be prime minister.

Johnson suffers from a fatal combination of qualities in any leader. He combines indifference to principles and disregard for others with disorganisation of mind and behaviour, and indecisiveness and laziness in action. These qualities have never been hidden. They are part of the role he played in public life

The Conservative party members who gave Britain such a leader, and the electors who then voted him into office, will have to carry the shame of it with them to their graves.

Lazy and fraudulent: we saw the true Johnson at the Covid inquiry – and why his like must never have power again | Martin Kettle

He confirmed himself as manifestly unfit. Those who gave Britain such a leader should carry the shame of it to their graves, says Guardian columnist Martin Kettle

"This [Rwanda] bill is the toughest piece of illegal migration legislation ever put forward by a UK government. It makes clear that Parliament deems Rwanda safe and no court can second guess that"

So because Parliament says Rwanda is safe, then it's safe....Hmm

Ds had suggested as it's so safe, she loves it and they want to send lawyers there to oversee the claims - that Braverman could be sent 😂

My boy makes me proud

Takes you back to his school report all those decades ago.

L1ttledrummergirl · 07/12/2023 08:23

@tobee "The problem is it doesn't get us out of the European Court of human rights legislation and that is a big problem."

This was his starting point.

mibbelucieachwell · 07/12/2023 08:26

Nick Robinson getting laid in to Suella Braverman just now.

Accusing her of dripping poison and her newspaper articles, questions and statements being all about her. Of attacking homeless people, the police and migrants.

Notonthestairs · 07/12/2023 08:34

Given Rwanda won't sign up to legislation that breaks international law what does Braverman, Jenrick expect to happen if they insist on their version of the Treaty?

Once again right wingers living in LaLa Land where the rest of the world will buckle to their desires. Magical thinking.

pointythings · 07/12/2023 08:35

Nick Robinson has been getting quite fierce with delusional Tories lately. Which is great, Today has been too soft on them for a decade.

Thread from Steve Peers on Rwanda

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1732444160731316708.html

One of his tweets
25/ an important point in clause 7.2: the bill does NOT apply to Rwandans who apply for asylum in the UK. The general irrefutable presumption of safety only applies to NON Rwandans.

So you can try and claim asylum in the UK if you're Rwandan on the basis that Rwanda is unsafe, but the UK can deport anyone else to Rwanda because it's safe.

Thread by @StevePeers on Thread Reader App

@StevePeers: 1/ Here's the Rwanda bill - my thread with the main points follows 2/ The context of the bill is the recently agreed Rwanda treaty. The issues in clause 1.3 *might* be enough to convince...…

Here is the R4 clip, well done Nick Robinson

Nick Robinson: You've attacked lawyers, judges, civil servants, the head of the Met police, the homeless.. isn't the truth you're a headline grabber, who does it by spreading poison..

Suella Braverman: I sought to be honest

NR: It's always all about you?

"Part of me thinks we should try it to see what happens."

I've thought similar. But they'd just blame someone else - the Rwandan Blob maybe, or (more likely) the French.

Perennial victims.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/12/2023 09:16

The other part of me suspects that given the Rwanda statement was cooked up with the U.K. government just doing it will mean the Rwandan government will be happy to take the money and refugees even if it breaks international law.

Notonthestairs · 07/12/2023 09:23

The Conservatives do seem to be happily waving around a blank cheque book (not quite so keen to tell us how much they've committed to).

If Jenrick and Braverman continue to push the "full fat" version of the treaty they will have to come right out and call Sunak and the Rwandan government liars.
Or that Rwandan can be bought. Neither of which looks particularly edifying. But then nothing in this ridiculous waste of time and money is edifying

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/12/2023 09:32

Cleverly really really avoided answering the question about how much it cost in the House yesterday. We do seem to be spending a lot of time and money not sending anyone to Rwanda.
