Thanks Duncin.

Hope your tooth’s not too painful @tobee.

Supposedly going to reduce taxes, so labour will look bad guys having to potentially put them back to where they were.

I'd rather pay nic and tax and be able to see my doctor and have a functioning NHS!

They do things to try stay in power. Not for good of people. People pay nic, some a lot of nic... we just want functioning services.

I despair.

"Merrymouse
seriously, how has the globe collectively managed to produce such a generation of fucked up leaders? Was it all the lead in petrol or something?

Social media rewards complete loons.

Not just social media - mainstream love it too."

This is true! Listening to The News Agents podcast when Cameron was back in government they were deliriously excited and pretty much had to apologise the next episode.

Endless articles from here and the US pop up on my Apple News feed constantly jabbering on about Trump; analysing utterance and reaction to law suit etc. All saying they're terrified of a second term for him but unable to resist the endless copy he provides.

We all know how much Farage was indulged (and still is) by the msm; getting him on air and "no one from the government was available" to counteract him.

So frustrating

Thanks @Blossomtoes

Cutting taxes feels like utter madness right now. It’s like booking a Caribbean holiday when you’ve got holes in your shoes. Public services are starved of money and they want to deprive them even further.

Exactly. I run a small business and struggle monthly... would welcome a tax cut, but not at this time, in this climate! There's folk need NHS treatment now, not in 6 months time. They live in cloud cuckoo land.

😇 my first ever thread title Grin

I also watched Laura Trott. Susanna Reid was brilliant. She said that when she heard he'd made the comment about letting people die she thought it didn't sound like something Sunak would say - and yet - you aren't denying it.

Many thanks for the new thread Duncin as thanks all contributors.

One flaw in this cruel plan, is that many employers don't want to employ disabled people. There are many other flaws too numerous to mention.

It's a rubbish plan. Look at all the threads where people are shouting about how bad wfh is. Employers won't buy into his without coercion. The Tories won't support disabled people over big businesses. This will be used as a stick to beat people with.

Another flaw is the assumption that someone's disability only kicks in when the leave their houses. I don't have a special hook in my hall where I hang up my disability when I get in like I do with my car keys.

Excellent title.

Roussette · 21/11/2023 12:39

It's all depressing. My DD volunteers with the Access Project to help high potential, under resourced students from very disadvantaged backgrounds to pass exams. She tutors Maths for an hour every week and has done for years. Her last student passed with flying colours but had to borrow a tablet to be tutored.

She has been assigned a new Student but the family can't afford laptop, tablet or anything, but he might be able to borrow his Mum's phone (says chief tutor). To solve equations on a borrowed phone is impossible. It's such a brilliant project but the difficulties students face are immense.
Tories and the DM would have you believe this family have 70" TVs and latest iPhones. 😥

Number 10 celebrates the culture of Northern Ireland with the flag of Ireland and a display of Scottish dancers. Is there anything they can't mess up?

Exactly.

For a start, what about people who need help to get up and washed and dressed every morning? How is the government going to ensure carers are available in order to get the disabled person at their work station at the right time. Paid carers often have a window of a couple of hours during which they arrive and unpaid carers have to fit in caring around their own lives.

What about people who may have one good day followed by several where they ate too ill to get up?

What about all the expensive adaptations that might be needed to work equipment or even a person's home to enable them to work from home?

It is a disgusting policy that has no basis in reality, thought up by people who have no idea about or care for the lives of disabled people.

IClaudine · 21/11/2023 12:57

Sorry for rant, but the idea that my very disabled husband and all those like him could be hounded even more by DWP enrages me.

I have a support worker who comes in twice a week to assist me with household admin stuff. They sit beside me while pay bills, make appointments, sort out letters and emails etc. I do all the work myself but if they don't come I do nothing. I always mean to do it, but I just can't get my brain to focus. So I waste time on MN instead. That's part of my disability. There's not a cat in hell's chance I'd do any work if I got a job WFH. Thankfully I don't live in the UK anymore so won't be subject to this monstrous government.

InMySpareTime · 21/11/2023 13:19

I responded to their "consultation" on disability and work, but strangely enough they haven't taken on board any of my suggestions. Things like taking away the 5 week waiting period and minimum income for self employment, so that disabled people with fluctuating conditions can take on small bits of work when they feel well and still be able to pay bills when they don't feel well. A fund for employers that actually covers the costs of adaptations for different disabilities. Support for part time flexible working so people can flex work around appointments/flare-ups/caring responsibilities while getting the work done (even if it's outside "normal" office hours). Making it really easy to pick up a previous eligibility for help when you lose yet another job because of a health deterioration, so people don't have to make themselves even more ill trying to navigate the system at the point their money runs out. Processing claims quickly and sanctioning assessors when they make decisions that are wrong.

With more carrot and less stick, more people would feel confident to take on some work. As the system currently stands, claimants who get a few weeks of work risk homelessness and bankruptcy before their legitimate claim is processed.
No wonder people daren't risk working.

Afternoon all. Thank you for the new thread.
