Increasing minimum wage just swaps money around. Minimum wage workers topping up with UC will lose 70% of their raise in reduced UC entitlement, and effectively the employer takes over some of the cost to the state.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/11/2023 17:08

This is what I don’t understand about the high wage economy thing.

Cornettoninja · 22/11/2023 17:15

Hey everyone- the country’s in massive amounts of debt but look at all these things we’ve branded as tax cuts. We’ve waved a wand and it’s all good now. You can definitely trust us.

Smoke & mirrors 🪄

pointythings · 22/11/2023 17:32

I'm just glad DS isn't affected by this - he doesn't claim UC because he has too much in savings and because he does 22.5 hours at NMW he doesn't pay tax or NI. I have to say respect for his employers though - he's 20, so they could get away with paying him the NMW rate for his age. He gets the 23+ rate.

I've worked out that the NI cut leaves me a whole £228 per year better off. Which will still be eaten up by inflation.

cinnamonbiscuit · 22/11/2023 17:45

Came on here to see if anyone had answers about the class 2 NI cut and what it means for state pension etc.

Just watched a Martin Lewis vid and he said something about voluntary contributions being necessary to keep entitlements. So I think this means if you don't earn enough to pay either class 1 or class 4 you will need to pay something similar to class 2 anyway.

Anyone have any more accurate/detailed info than this? I'm part time employed/self employed so this v much affects me and must affect many others.

Do feel like if you asked people if they’d pay an extra £20 a month for improved access to healthcare most people would be happy with that.

Hope you spend your £19 wisely.

Has everyone caught the Cleverly story? When the question was asked why 34% of children in Stockton live in poverty, Cleverly said 'because it's a shithole'. In parliament.

He’s denying it. Obviously.

There he goes, living up to his name again.

Is it likely to have been caught by hansard?

Almost half the benefit from the National Insurance cuts will go to the richest 20% of households, with most of the gains being seen in London and the South East, according to new analysis by IPPR.

I asked the Prime Minister why 34% of children in Stockton North are living in poverty. The Home Secretary James Cleverly can apparently be heard saying it is a "sh**hole".

This comment shames the Home Secretary, the Government and his party and he should apologise.

@RafaistheKingofClay I would much rather see increased funding for public services. And I am a humble basic rate taxpayer. Not going to happen under this lot though.

Did anyone hear the Treasury guy on PM? I want some of what he's been smoking - listening to him, you'd think all our public services were sparkling and shiny due to all the Tory investment. Oh, to be that stoned at work...

AutumnCrow · 22/11/2023 19:05

I played it a second time with my eyes closed, to focus, and could hear it.

The shithole comment ^^

I've only seen reports (eg in the Guardian) that it'll go up in April, but not by how much. The lack of detail thus far is frustrating.

@DuncinToffee I was afraid that would happen, they've been lurching to the right for some time now.

Possible PVV/VVD/NSC coalition, but it's thin and there would be some serious clashes. It'll be a mess.

I'm just catching up with today's news. The jist of it looks to me like £25 billion spent trying to buy votes and keeping their MPs happy (ish) whilst again cutting budgets for public services.
What a nightmare for any party to inherit.

And tomorrow we will find out how much the new energy price cap will be.
