How rude was Cliff Richard to Alison Hammond?! 😲

Hi,

Had TM on in the background earlier and I was absolutely shocked at how casually rude Cliff Richard was to Alison Hammond. Not directly to her, but MASSIVELY inconsiderate and offensive nevertheless.

He was talking about the reason he missed his chance to meet Elvis and he explained that Elvis was overweight at the time and he knew he'd put up a picture on his wall of him and Elvis, but didn't want to if he "overweight and didn't look good" 🤨🙄 He went on to say something else not looking good if you were carrying extra weight and you could see how upset Alison was. She came back with something and tried to be humorous about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't want to call him out on it there and then. And obviously it won't have just been Alison who would have been offended by his clumsy, tone deaf comments.

Did anyone see it? So bad 🫤

@Nanny0gg It may very well be a well-formed pop song but it's hardly revolutionary.

It was in 1959!

I don’t think he was aiming it at her and if she was upset about it, perhaps she isn’t happy being overweight?

Aren't you a delight.

Manners cost nothing and sharing horrible anecdotes about overweight/underweight people in their earshot is fucking horrible.

I think he lost any bid for national treasure status by not being honest about his sexuality.
I understand it's his personal choice but I think in 2023 it not something people respect and it has naturally led to suspicion around him and dislike that he's being dishonest.
My mum is huge fan and of a generation that would ask no questions but the world has moved on.

I think it was common knowledge around the Algarve. A woman I used to spend time with said she see him and his 'companion' in a bar. She hated him. HATED him, but wouldn't say why.

Northernsouloldies · 20/11/2023 18:15

For teens in the 60s it must have been a blessing to have the who, stones, kinks, animals, byrds plus motown rather than that sanctimonious cunt cliff Richard.

ChannelNo19EDT · 20/11/2023 18:16

Geez, that does sound rude. Even if it was what he was thinking at the time, 45 years ago he could have presented the memory in a less offensive way.

It was in 1959!

But Elvis Presley (and others, like Eddie Cochran) had already been doing their thing for years before Cliff popped up1959.
Cliff was a pale imitation. Or at the very least he was following an already established trend. He was hardly an innovator.

@Treesinmygarden Why was revolutionary?
Not trying to have a dig, just curious. I know McCartney liked it and The Young Ones covered it I can't imagine it'll be remembered fondly by the next generations.

Because of the type of music that was generally popular at the time.
The 'Teen Revolution' was well underway in the States, but here it was the likes of Perry Como, Lonnie Doneghan, Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen, Frankie Vaughn etc (ask your parents!)

He was one of the first British 'hearthrobs' along with Billy Fury, Adam Faith etc

I know, westfacing, that was a ridiculous comment. My ‘old biddy’ relatives are Stones fans, it’s what they grew up with. Mick Jagger is 80!

I’m not sure who still likes Cliff Richard though - my granny was a big fan, but she’s been dead for 30 years…

I have an interesting Cliff story… but saving it for when he’s no longer with us 😉

This old biddy and her 72 yr old sister love them! I saw them live a few years ago…fantastic night!

Who was the fucker who invented Teenagers? And why?

Some US cleverclogs with his eyes on the dollar signs!

funbags3 · 20/11/2023 18:21

@Nanny0gg I'm too old to ask my parents but thanks for your insight.

And? How many artists sing other people's songs??

Northernsouloldies · 20/11/2023 18:22

It was a market that bridged between pubescent kids and adults ie, fashions and music.

Nanny0gg · 20/11/2023 18:23

porridgeisbae · 20/11/2023 17:53

Kids before the 50s were like mini versions of their parents.

IDK I mean there were Flappers at one point and before that there weren't Flappers.

Flappers were 1920s so I don't get what you mean. They weren't teenagers

He was still very popular then. And has outlasted all of them (Though I much prefer Motown)

Icouldeatatesticle · 20/11/2023 18:24

Gives me the heebie jeebies, Alison is obviously overweight, but looks stunning, great hair and make up

And then she opens her mouth... I refuse to watch her. I can't abide the cackle.

In the US! And yes, we loved them here, But Cliff was at the beginning of the British pop scene.

Gilead · 20/11/2023 18:27

It’ll all come out when he’s gone..

Uricon2 · 20/11/2023 18:28

Nanny0gg · 20/11/2023 14:56

No excuse but I do wonder if he has an eating disorder himself.

He's way too thin for a man in his 80s (even though he's not alone - Mick Jagger obvs)

TBF, Mick Jagger has always looked like that!

Northernsouloldies · 20/11/2023 18:28

Mmm he hasn't out lasted the who or the stones plus the who wrote great concept albums such as Tommy and Quadrophenia and motown and Northern soul is still going strong now.

He's lived longer than some of them but his music can't compare to the likes of The Kinks or The Byrds or Motown. It's drivel.

Livelovebehappy · 20/11/2023 18:38

Tbh, it’s probably a story he’s told a few times when on TV. He can’t tailor his stories to suit his audience. Alison might not have been on the show today, but there could have been another guest who was overweight - is he supposed to call the tv station ahead of his appearance to find out who is on and whether there are stuff he can’t discuss for fear of offence? I’m not a fan of his, but neither am I a fan of Alison Hammond. After all, she did used to say at her heaviest how happy and comfortable she was in her own skin, but then goes on to lose lots of weight. Less than honest there wasn’t she?

DonttouchthatLarry · 20/11/2023 18:38

All the 'wrong 'un' comments - I concur.
