How rude was Cliff Richard to Alison Hammond?! 😲

Hi,

Had TM on in the background earlier and I was absolutely shocked at how casually rude Cliff Richard was to Alison Hammond. Not directly to her, but MASSIVELY inconsiderate and offensive nevertheless.

He was talking about the reason he missed his chance to meet Elvis and he explained that Elvis was overweight at the time and he knew he'd put up a picture on his wall of him and Elvis, but didn't want to if he "overweight and didn't look good" 🤨🙄 He went on to say something else not looking good if you were carrying extra weight and you could see how upset Alison was. She came back with something and tried to be humorous about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't want to call him out on it there and then. And obviously it won't have just been Alison who would have been offended by his clumsy, tone deaf comments.

Did anyone see it? So bad 🫤

This is hilarious Grin and all the Cliff Apologists in the thread saying he didn’t want to meet Elvis because Elvis was going through a rough patch… I mean he plainly says

“if I’m going to have a picture taken with him, and it’s going to be hanging on my refrigerator- it’s gotta look good”

Imagine, Cliff thinking Elvis wasn’t good enough for a photo with him because he had put weight on.

let’s be honest- appearances and image have been more important to Cliff in his life than many other things. What a sad little life he leads.

Allison clearly not a fan presumably from before the interview started? Felt like Sarah Ferguson was there to “fawn” because neither Alison nor Dermot were kissing his arse were they.

don’t forget the moral of the story folks - meet your heroes, even if they are fat 😂 what an insightful guy 😂😂

I’m risking outing myself here but this same thing happened to me last week. I was at an evening class and the conversation was about health. The teacher kept saying that the worst fear she had about a recent health scare was that she might put on weight due to the drugs she would need to take. How that fear was worse than the illness itself. Everyone laughed and agreed. And there I sat. Big fat bastard. Everyone else slim. Fortunately for me my self esteem is on the floor already so no harm done.

Sorry you went through that. Some people are horrible. You are the nicer person.

Beaverbridge · 20/11/2023 17:44

He, s 100% a wrong un.

Drop the sarcasm luv.

Sooo, one can't compare other singers around his age with Cliff Richard, because the thread is about Cliff Richard??

Right...

Depends.
Are any of them on telly making enormous twits of themselves? If so, that's fair enough and a valid comparison, though they probably would warrant their own thread.

Otherwise, it's pretty irrelevant and derailing to bring up other, totally unrelated people to compare with Cliff Richard.

He is idolised by his fan base. I am not suggesting he is a world-wide icon like Elvis but he is incredibly popular across the world (though not the US - he never made it there) and he was definitely at the start of the pop revolution in this country.

Unless you are of a certain age you can't imagine how popular he was. Fans screamed at him as much as they did at the Beatles.

Shame though, like so many, he didn't want to grow old gracefully.

Define 'growing old gracefully'?

Itham · 20/11/2023 17:47

I don't think Cliff was having a dig at Alison, he's so self absorbed he would barely have noticed her. That's the point.

Abhannmor · 20/11/2023 17:49

I read somewhere that if you live long enough you will lose a third of your body weight in any event. Not sure this alone explains Cliffs weight mind you.

One of his old songs I quite like is his version of Blue Turns to Grey. Apparently he was annoyed to learn it was written by Jagger/ Richards of whom he disapproved. He seemed to have a strange , tangential relationship to pop music? Like some BBC deejays in fact. As PPs have said there is a rather insulated clique at work.

porridgeisbae · 20/11/2023 17:52

@Abhannmor He was Born Again so before his conversion he was probably ok with all of it, after that he felt conflicted or tried to do a cleaner cut version of pop.

MrsDotCotton · 20/11/2023 17:52

I think Cliff has become a bit used to thinking of himself as a national treasure.

Bandofbrothers · 20/11/2023 17:52

He seems really out of touch, don’t like him at all. Very self centred when he was on The One Show recently. Gave me really bad vibes.

Just think, this all could have been prevented if photoshop had been around back then.🧐

porridgeisbae · 20/11/2023 17:53

Kids before the 50s were like mini versions of their parents.

IDK I mean there were Flappers at one point and before that there weren't Flappers.

TheRealLilyMunster · 20/11/2023 17:55

'If I'm having my photo taken with him, and it's hanging on my refrigerator, he's gotta look good'

I just watched this, he seems pretty shallow to be honest, and not very self aware.

I think Alison is very beautiful.

Fizbosshoes · 20/11/2023 17:55

I don't think I've ever really got over Mistletoe and Wine keeping Especially for you off the number one spot in 1988.
11 year old me was gutted to see Cliff prancing about on TOTP in his glittery bomber jacket when it should could have been Kylie and Jason prancing about in glittery bomber jackets!

@porridgeisbae Yes, you're right. Jazz and a new sense of freedom meant the young wanted to stay young a little bit longer.

old biddies don't exactly like the Rolling Stones etc. Shock

This old biddy does!

Yes, the fans from the 60's are all 'old biddies' now - can't imagine they'd agree to go on TM though - they're too A list

FinallyFinalGirl · 20/11/2023 17:59

Never liked him. And even when he was young and handsome he was strangely unattractive. No charisma.

I remember in the 90s he was protesting about Eminem coming over to the UK, and saying that British parents didn't want him influencing their kids. Fucked me, as an actual parent, right off!

Cliff, you're not and have never been a parent. You dont speak for anyone but yourself.

AllAroundMyCat · 20/11/2023 18:01

He doesn't live abroad to evade tax.

Abhannmor · 20/11/2023 18:04

I'd forgotten he was a Christian @porridgeisbae . Must complicate things for him iyswim. The Shadows were a brilliant band too , not just his backing group.

Luxurybeliefspreader · 20/11/2023 18:08

I think he lost any bid for national treasure status by not being honest about his sexuality.
I understand it's his personal choice but I think in 2023 it not something people respect and it has naturally led to suspicion around him and dislike that he's being dishonest.
My mum is huge fan and of a generation that would ask no questions but the world has moved on.

I said avoid not evade. But to be fair, that may not be the reason he is non resident in the UK, so fair enough.

Actually I feel a bit mean saying this now, as he does give away a lot of his money to charity. Apologies Cliff!
