Thread 11 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Whoops, missed the filling up of the previous thread! (thread 10).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Don’t wish to be rude, but why don’t I understand any of this thread or what it’s about 😬

It an elaborate secret code, designed in 1957 to send messages to the Kiribati secret service.

Trouble is, by the time the world had invented social media that allowed the code to be deployed, Kiribati had disbanded its espionage operations - so we're all at a bit of a loose end.

As for 'what it's about' - nothing particular, really. We're just chatting.

This morning's update:

  • Bloody freezing overnight, woke up to a light dusting of snow and some scary patches of black ice.
  • Got DDs' orthodontist appointment dates wrong, thought it was today but it's next week. Fortunately, I realised yesterday afternoon that the clinic hadn't sent a reminder text message and thought "how unusual" and rang them to check. And, better than if I'd got it the other way around!
  • The 3D printer at work has broken again, right in the middle of doing one of my demonstration molecules that I need for teaching the project students. On the bright side, its frequent tantrums mean that I now own a full set of fancy-headed tiny screwdrivers and have learned to dismantle, unclog, clean, and reassemble the print head like an absolute pro.

My news is that I managed to knock over a full 400ml of tea earlier and the tea went all over the worktop, cupboard doors and the floor. Mercifully, it was my second mug of the morning and there was still a mug in the pot, so not as tragic as if it was the first. Annoying, mind you.

It's very cold here this morning and will be a five-layer day outside. No snow, but icy.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 30/11/2023 10:21

It's lovely and sunny out, but my office is currently 11.7°C - up from a starting temp of 9.3°C.

kittykarate · 30/11/2023 10:42

I'm currently in County Durham - 4 inches of snow here! Working up the courage to try and move my car, as it is a weapons grade knobhead in the snow.

Dotellhimpike · 30/11/2023 11:03

Am also in the North East, just outside Newcastle, light dusting of snow here, temperature such that the cat's have decided to hold in their pee, rather than going outside for a wazz.

Gosh, 4 inches! Are you in a particularly snowy location?

I'm on the edge of Weardale (kind of the bit to the east of Durham city, before you find the proper hills in the Pennines). Weather can be unpredictable enough that my mam has snow tyres for winter. I just have had a succession of cars with fat low profile tires which are spectacularly useless in snow. As I don't live here anymore , I don't have all the 'gear' for the weather.

SinnerBoy · 30/11/2023 12:04

We've been having spates of hail and sleet since about 9:30, the weather app reckons it's 4° and it's melted. Been doing housework to warm me up, even though the pipes are on.

I have a stinking cold, which I thought had passed, when I woke up, but after a short time, my nose started running again. I think it's too early to put the wood burner on, but I've cleaned it and prepared the kindling....

kittykarate · 30/11/2023 12:30

Just realised I got my easts/wests mixed up, Weardale is to the west of Durham. There probably isn't enough snow yet for Weardale ski club to turn on their lifts yet, but I bet they're counting down the days.

Just cold here. Obviously I now have snow envy!

artant · 30/11/2023 12:59

Love the menopause thread!

VictorianBigot · 30/11/2023 13:37

I also have snow envy ☃️ my friend said it was snowing in Bournemouth earlier so I’m hopefully for at least a small flurry.

Hope you start feeling better soon @SinnerBoy. Personally I’d get that fire lit.

Britinme · 30/11/2023 13:41

Here in Maine we are laughing at Sadiq Khan declaring a weather emergency for 3cm of snow. I have photos showing 3 feet or more at times here. None so far this winter and it can stay away as long as it likes.

artant · 30/11/2023 14:57

Anything more than about three flakes of snow constitutes a weather emergency in London. We’re just not equipped to deal with it. This is inexcusable, of course, but less so now it seldom snows.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 30/11/2023 15:07

Personally I’d get that fire lit.

Me too. No point in being ill and cold, make yourself a bit more comfortable. Hope you feel better soon, @SinnerBoy.

Dotellhimpike · 30/11/2023 15:39

Me three, light a fire and get a hot toddy inside you.

SinnerBoy · 30/11/2023 15:44

VictorianBigot · Today 13:37

Spooky! I lit it very shortly after you posted, without seeing it!

duc748 · 30/11/2023 15:49

Just lit mine!

VictorianBigot · 30/11/2023 16:48

Just got back from a walk in very slight sleet. I come alive in this weather... for some reason my mood improves so much. It’s like I have SAD but the unconventional way around. I think I need to join @Britinme in Maine.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 30/11/2023 17:05

We've lit our fire too.

@VictorianBigot I absolutely love the crisp sunny days of winter and enjoy the slow swing of the seasons. Don't mind the long nights at all, nor the short ones.

Kucinghitam · 30/11/2023 17:07

Tomorrow DH and I are both WFH - the fire will most definitely be lit!
