Thread 11 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Whoops, missed the filling up of the previous thread! (thread 10).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I fancied Poor Things; I liked The Lobster, but it seems I've missed it at my local-ish cinema. So it's a question of whether I CBA with a trip to Manchester.

Dotellhimpike · 24/01/2024 21:47

I'm really looking forward to Poor Things, being a huge fan of Alasdair Gray. A close friend of mine struck up a friendship with him in his later years, and I am sorry he isn't around to see how successful this has been. My signed copy of Lanark is one of my most precious things.

MouseMinge · 24/01/2024 21:50

I think it's worth it but then again it depends on what an arse ache the trip is. I slept incredibly badly last night - as we're talking about arses, constipation was the cause - and for 2 hours and 20 minutes I didn't even come close to falling asleep which, as a lot of you will remember from last year, is a favourite^ habit of mine.

^ Not a favourite at all, in fact it's bloody annoying but I'm quite prone to it. That said, I know I've loved a film if I'm even slightly tired and am wide awake through a film. cf. Oppenheimer which was mad long but I was awake throughout.

Maybe on Friday. It's not that much of faff; I can get the train, even driving is feasible, there's a multi-storey right next door.

Dotellhimpike · 24/01/2024 22:23

I don't really get how Oppenheimer was so watchable but it was.

MouseMinge · 24/01/2024 22:51

That's how I felt, @Dotellhimpike and it was so long but the time seemed to fly, which also didn't make sense.

Britinme · 24/01/2024 23:14

We watched Killers of the Flower Moon on streaming last Saturday, which is over 3 hours long but held us all the way through.

MouseMinge · 24/01/2024 23:51

I must watch that. Tonight I have mostly been watching Schitt's Creek which I have finally gotten around to. I'm enjoying it.

Dotellhimpike · 25/01/2024 00:08

I'm working my way through Kenneth Brannagh's Hamlet, which is four hours long, so I am tackling it in one hour segments. It must be a contender for ultimate film for seven degrees of Kevin Bacon, where else could you see Ken Dodd and Jack lemon in the same movie?

Bon voyage Kuc! Hope your mum hasn't surreptitiously slipped any 20 Yr old foodstuffs into your luggage!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 25/01/2024 09:06

Surely 20 year old cake is the best travelling food. If it's lasted this.long, it's proved its durability.

Kucinghitam · 25/01/2024 09:12

Like dwarf bread!

Heh! Schitts Creek is excellent when you're poorly - I watched it all when I had shingles couple of years ago.

MouseMinge · 26/01/2024 02:05

I was going to watch it tonight but BBC4 intervened and I ended up watching The Magnificent Ambersons followed by the second part of a documentary about Orson Welles, followed by Judgement at Nuremberg. I've seen the latter before, sort of because I'd never seen it all before. Given the time I'm posting this it's fair to say that that is now rectified. V good stuff with Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift deserving high praise for two wonderful supporting roles.
