Thread 11 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Whoops, missed the filling up of the previous thread! (thread 10).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

After ten years of being full vegan I've recently gone back to eating eggs and cheese. I'm still buying things like vegan pizza but now adding real mozzarella to it to sex it up a bit. God I've missed cheese so much.

StephanieSuperpowers · 23/01/2024 21:12

Is it hard on your stomach?

Dotellhimpike · 24/01/2024 00:47

Not at all but I've always had a cast iron stomach, with the exception of macrobiotic food which goes apeshit in my system with the most incredibly loud murmuring an gurgling, followed by an explody bottom. I tend to avoid macrobiotic food.

Was there any particular reason for the switch @Dotellhimpike? My friend had been vegan for a decade or so but recently started eating eggs again.

For much of my life I've been pescatarian or vegetarian with vegan phases, but recently started eating certain meat again occasionally as my gut seems to be able to tolerate tofu and lentils less and less. It does feel a bit horrible. One thing I could never eat again is pork.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 24/01/2024 09:25

I was vegetarian for several years in my 20s but despite how carefully I planned my diet, diligently combining proteins, I just could not keep weight on or build decent muscle. These days I eat a small amount of meat with a huge amount of vegetables and that works well. It's a bit Jack Sprat in this house, Mr Veg is like a pack of wolves compared to me but we eat the platter clean.

I started eating cheese again because I'm worried that at my age I need to be getting enough calcium to keep my bones healthy. I started eating eggs because I've been on half pay for the last two months while my job adjusts and eggs are cheap and nutritious.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 24/01/2024 09:37

And eggs will take you a fair way too, pike. I find them very good for sustaining me through a session of physical work.

StephanieSuperpowers · 24/01/2024 09:38

And they can be eaten with just about anything you have in the fridge, which is a great way of reducing waste if you're trying to cut spending a bit.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 24/01/2024 09:40

I now have a sudden craving for a hard boiled egg with bread and butter.

duc748 · 24/01/2024 10:53

Right now I am eating a boiled egg with fresh sourdough, made late last night, my favourite breakfast. I've been veggie for A Very Long Time, and I do largely ascribe my much better-than-expected health to it, touch wood.

MouseMinge · 24/01/2024 11:54

I was veggie for years and then another veggie friend died and for some reason that made me want to eat meat again so I did. N.b. he didn't die of vegetarianism! Then I had to stop again because meat and a fucked up oesophagus are not happy bedfellows. I can eat fish because it's not as "heavy" as meat. When my oesophagus is unfucked up I may eat meat on occasion but I'm not overly fussed about it. Vegetables, eggs and dairy are the best!

I can/have eaten bacon/ham but no actual pork which is at the very least morally ambiguous. Oh and no lamb. Or steak but that's because I've always been meh about steak. Oh even that is bollocks. I'd eat stewing steak. My meat moral compass just spins around like a demented thing. Morrissey would hate me but he's a racist arsehole so the contempt would be mutual.

Britinme · 24/01/2024 12:25

We're eating less and less meat these days. DH isn't a fan of pork so we don't eat that, but we do eat bacon and ham occasionally. I like lamb and as meat goes I think it's the least mucked about meat, but it's horribly expensive here so we rarely eat it. We don't eat much beef and when we do it's mince or stewing beef in a casserole. We do eat eggs, cheese, milk, fish, chicken and turkey though, and beans and lentils and lots of veggies and fruit.

A racist arsehole with a gorgeous voice 😻 Confused 😻

I’ve been vegetarian for 30-something years but don’t eat that much dairy and try to go for organic when I do. I’m trying to get back to healthy eating at the moment as I need to shed a huge amount of weight so my main meals generally involve a large quantity of vegetables plus tofu, lentils and the like.

I cook meat for my mum and brother though but only buy organic. Mum eats tiny quantities of meat or fish though so having higher quality meat doesn’t massively hit our food spend (I think her cherry tomato habit probably costs more).

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 24/01/2024 13:40

Re eating less and less meat, I wonder how many are like me as I find I can't digest it well these days and my guts are happier with less, but I do like a tiny bit.

We get most of our meat from a couple of nearby small farms these days and it's very different, especially the lamb. We lived on a smallholding for a while and ate the animals there, even a steer called Tufty (sorry Tufty).

artant · 24/01/2024 14:08

I think for my mum it’s definitely the case that she likes the taste and familiarity of meat but needs plainer and plainer food so a tiny but of simply cooked meat or fish seems to be the way to go these days. She generally can’t tell if she’s eating lamb, beef or pork though! The exception to her plain food needs is potatoes which she won’t eat unless they’ve been fried or roasted. The air fryer is perfect for both cooking meat well (she’s always preferred steak well done) without drying it out and for frying potatoes with only a tiny bit of oil.

She is very old though!

DeanElderberry · 24/01/2024 14:46

I love meat and in the past when I have given it up for prolonged periods have come down with one infection after another, so I'll stick with my dietary savagery. I do have a couple of meat-free dinners a week, often including one that is full vegan. But even on that day I'll have had an egg or two for breakfast.

VictorianBigot · 24/01/2024 14:46

They do, usually very long-winded and detached/emotionless. But then this is often my experience of men writing things.

duc748 · 24/01/2024 14:56

I had a quick look at that thread, and thought, no, it's not for me.

Britinme · 24/01/2024 20:38

I have diverticulosis which occasionally diverts (SWIDT) into diverticulitis, so I have to eat high-fibre food, and that on its own cuts down the amount of meat. I have a good friend who is vegetarian bordering on vegan and I've picked up a lot of veggie-eating stuff from her.

Britinme · 24/01/2024 20:58

That is an excellent link @Gonners . You wouldn't catch an American health website using words like that!

MouseMinge · 24/01/2024 21:29

He does have a great voice, @VictorianBigot

I saw The Smiths at a GLC festival a million years ago. They were good. I'm grateful for Johnny Marr because at least he's a decent cove, currently telling Trump to go fuck himself for using a Smith's song at his interminable rallies.

I went to the cinema this evening to see Poor Things. Oh my days did I love it. I LOVED it so much. It is absolutely bloody hilarious and the end was utterly fabulous. 10/10 would - probably will - watch again.

Gonners · 24/01/2024 21:33

If you Google "NHS flatulence" you are directed to a page headed Farting (flatulence) ."NHS the runs" directs you to Diarrhoea and vomiting, as does "NHS puking". I think someone with a brain has been involved in this!
