alice9263 · 18/11/2023 15:40

My local supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, LIDL has got no strawberries for about 2-3 weeks now. M&S has got a small bit.!" Googled a bit and didn't see any news on shortage... asking cause I bake a lot using strawberries

Wtf is with the "strawberries in November?! ShockShockShock" crowd? Pretty sure we could get them year round when I was growing up which is a long time ago now.

Our DC like strawberries in their breakfast, we usually have no trouble getting them year round, although they're not particularly nice. Can't get them in the supermarkets at all ATM, our garage has some by an Irish supplier (we're in NI) but no joy in Tesco for weeks now.

RailwayAnna · 18/11/2023 17:08

I think they look pretty. Good luck finding a substitute.

Chewbecca · 18/11/2023 17:09

I don't want to eat strawberries in November, I don't want them flown across the world for me.

It's time to find some Christmas baking recipes that use seasonal ingredients.

Quite an interesting advertising technique OP. Do I DM you for orders?🤔

Yup.
Marketing doesn't seem to be your strong suit op - try more local sites.

PickAChew · 18/11/2023 17:10

It's bloody November. There shouldn't be any strawberries in the supermarkets!

Cakes do look cute, mind.

Tesco also has a broccoli shortage which is very unhelpful.

They did week in my branch but there was plenty today so might be a local supply issue

Snowdropanddiddums · 18/11/2023 17:12

Yes it’s November but that’s not the reason for the shortage as every other year we’ve bought them year round coz the kids like them. You might not agree with eating fruit out of season but they are definitely normally available to buy in November. I agree OP it’s annoying.

alice9263 · 18/11/2023 16:32

maybe I will use fondant figurine instead for this year 😂

How many do you usually make?

We always used to until we got greedy

GirrlCrush · 18/11/2023 17:15

So we fly them in 'coz the kids like them'?

We won't have a decent planet left for these indulged kids soon enough

AyrshireTryer · 18/11/2023 17:15

I'm old enough to remember when fruit and vegetables were seasonal.
Hope you find some.

viques · 18/11/2023 17:18

I think that’s a good thing, they will have been flown in from somewhere where they would have been grown under heated glass so huge carbon footprint. And won’t taste or smell of strawberries anyway.

wait until next summer and enjoy real English strawberries in season.

GirrlCrush · 18/11/2023 17:19

It's only for bloody 'Santa hats' ...

Womencanlift · 18/11/2023 17:22

I have never had an issue getting strawberries all year round. In fact bought a punnet yesterday. Yes they don’t taste as good in winter but still fine for having with yoghurt at breakfast

Would never have frozen, they taste worse than winter strawberries

TLDRfuckers · 18/11/2023 17:23

I think you chose the wrong fruit to bake with hun

viques · 18/11/2023 17:23

So well worth helping to screw up the planet’s climate , thank goodness, I thought they were for some frivolous enterprise………..

garlicandsapphires · 18/11/2023 16:27

we shouldn’t be able to buy strawberries in November FGS!

If you applied that logic to all out of season fresh produce flown in from abroad then the supermarket shelves would be pretty empty. I happen to agree with you, we should eat more seasonally but truth is we can't grow enough produce in this country to feed everyone so it has to be flown in.

Rosme · 18/11/2023 17:32

alice9263 · 18/11/2023 15:51

November so? I baked these from around this time till Christmas every year for parties, and baked hundreds of them. (Inside the Christmas Tree also a strawberry)

OP these are amazing!!

penjil · 18/11/2023 17:34

.....and if you do find Strawberries on the supermarkets in November, they'll be tasteless bland hard things that have been grown in Morocco or Egypt or further afield.

Not nice or good quality.

Kimonokweenie · 18/11/2023 17:39

I don’t eat strawberries at this time of year - airfreighted in and taste like shit

henrysugar12 · 18/11/2023 17:39

Buy frozen or freeze-dried instead.

Do you really only eat fruit and veg that's seasonal to the UK? That's a pretty unvaried diet by modern standards.

TheKnittedCharacter · 18/11/2023 17:41

Has anyone said ‘it’s November?’ 😂

We only buy British strawberries and only in the summer.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 18/11/2023 17:41

Why would you even use strawberries for Santa's hat? They will get all watery and mushy and who wants anything with Santa in mid November?

Get yourself some fondant and be done with it.

Kimonokweenie · 18/11/2023 17:43

How is it unvaried? Seasons come and go quite quickly.
